Ultraboost 20 - After 100 Miles - Kofuzi vs. Eddbud

Even if it did appear to be nearly identical to the UB19, the Adidas Ultraboost 20 was a bit of a surprise to me. And after 100 miles, I can conclude that it is perhaps the best running Ultraboost that Adidas has ever made. But it's also the least like what I would expect from an Ultraboost. To help clear up the confusion, I enlist the help of a friend, Eddbud, to help break down the shoe and give you a second opinion.
And if you want more analysis: here's the video that Eddbud made for his channel!
• Adidas Ultraboost 20 r...
Disclosures: my pair of ultraboost was provided to me by Road Runner Sports. Eddbud's was purchased with his own money. Neither of us are being paid to make this video or to wear these shoes. Except for us seeing each other's footage, no one has seen either Eddbud's or my footage our videos went live on youtube.

This was a pretty great review by two powerhouse Shoetubers! Difficult times for everyone, but this was a really fun and informative review. A bit like 2-in-1 coffee. Saved some time, watched 1 video and got 2 perspectives. If I may, I'd like to suggest having some infographic or table at the end to summarize the combined reviews - to highlight what you guys concurred and disagreed about. Cheers and stay safe Kobud / EddFuzi !!

As a 250 pound 6’2 guy I love this shoe. The 10mm drop is great as I strike the ground with my heel directly below the body as I run and it propels me forward and takes pressure off my ankles and Achilles. I run casually in them, and the support and cushion works in all the right places. Everyone’s feet are different and I think they are the most comfortable runners I’ve ever owned. A lighter faster runner would have a very different opinion I’m sure ! I have purchased a second pair and will be a part of my rotation long into the future.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I'm using these as easy day shoes, and they've been fantastic. The weight actually helps me keep the pace down, whereas I'd be very tempted to speed up in my other daily trainer NB Beacon v2. Also helps that I didn't pay anything near the full price for it. Thank you for the review!

Well done gentlemen on a wonderful combined review, exceptionally informative and insightful. I own a pair of Ultraboost 20's and I could relate to some of the issues that you both experienced. I can concur with you Kofuzi that the shoe does seem to have an identity issue. It seems to have transitioned away from the maximum cushioned, squishy, plush ride of Ultraboost 18s and its predecessors. Like you mentioned when picking up the pace - it can handle it but unfortunately I would not make this my race day shoes. These daily trainer/long run/recovery shoes are just that - it can go the distance and the ride is quite a bit firmer than the UB 19's. Its a decent shoe and 330 kilometers later - its still going strong. I am tempted to try the Solarboost as essentially the UB 20 mimics that shoe.

Great video! I actually watch both your reviews all the time, so this was a cool side-by-side. I have been alternating between running in the Ultra Boost 20 and the Pegasus Turbo 2, and I honestly love running in both. But I actually feel a little more confident about long distances when I put on the Pegasus Turbo 2 - I don’t typically love Nike, but those are a great shoe. I’m glad to have both, though. I also have a pair of Adidas Adios 4 that I break out for special occasions, but the UB20 seemed to close the gap on comfort with that shoe.

Nice to see this collaboration and get two reviews in one! This would be too heavy and too much shoe for me but I feel I’m missing a proper long run shoe in my rotation. I still love the Boston 8 which I’ve used for that but I probably need more cushion. Other shoes I have are Brooks Revel 3, Rincon (and I have a pair of Next % bought a long time ago which is being saved for Boston). So many new shoes to try-what do you think would be best for a light, efficient runner who likes a snug fit and not too mushy cushion, not too heavy a shoe and a drop no higher than 10mm? Wish I could go in a store now that has everything to try some of the new ASICS (NovaBlast and Glideride), the new Saucony’s (wasn’t crazy about fit for me when I tried the new Kinvara), kind of liked the NB Tempo in the store several months ago. I’m between sizes on lots of NB models but that one was ok. NB TC is getting lots of praise including by Edd Budd for training purposes but not sure I need a carbon plate and that price point just for one marathon cycle. Kofuzi, I haven’t seen you wear the Adi SL20 since your one review. Did it not work out for you either? I loved it but did two longish runs in it and got niggles here and there both time for no explainable reason but returned it to be on the safe side. Martha

I think ultra boost is becoming more like kayano 22and before.Best cushion, best protection, and heavy.but there are something different, because boost is softer than gel,and you can feel more cushion.Like you say, this shoe design for people who want to do daily run and don’t have enough time to warm up.It can keep them away from being hurt.

I actually bought my first Ultraboosts this year, but I opted for the Summer.Rdy versions. The upper is Celermesh instead of Primeknit (which makes it more breathable). Also there’s no mid-foot cage either. I bought them because I walk to work everyday and the black version is neutral enough for the office. I wonder what you’d think of those as an alternative to the 20’s?

  • @rohana.7760

I think it could do without the heel padding, I use Nike react flyknits which have zero heel padding and my heel feels much more secure and comfortable in those than in my Adidas where the padding just feels awkward and slippery when running. When walking, however, the padding feels nice and offers better ankle support than the Nikes. Basically I think the design of these boost-equipped shoes is more along the lines of an Everyday shoe you can also use for athletics rather than a purpose built running shoe that the marketing makes them out to be.

My current pair of UB (second) is almost ending it’s life cycle (sole almost totally worn out and reaching midsole), I’m wondering if I should swap them for sketchers max road or NB 1080v10 since they are lighter but still cushioned.

Bro, I love high cushion shoes. I've tried all the Nike reacts and infiniti's. I have several different pair of Hokas which I love but I copped a pair of 1080v10s and I can't take them off. They've become my favorite lifestyle/walking/running shoe hands down. Styling could be a little better but that's subjective. You can't even compare the ultra boosts to them. They are built better, breathe better, much lighter, much more cushioney (granted slightly less responsive) and is made with much better materials. You'll love them. Trust me

I have the Boston 7s and Peg 36s. They are not alike. Peg much more cushioned. You can wear pegs as a pait of sneakers, you can not do that with Boston, if you ask me. It's a great tempo shoe tho!

@@13igCity13oy honestly think the peg is a great trainer, and very cheap, so don't see why he's switching? But I'd rather go for Saucony freedom, Saucony kinvara, Asics Gel Nimbus Lite or Hoka Clifton 6. Those are all good daily trainers that can fo a big variety of paces.

The Boston series are great running shoes, but maybe not for everybody if you want more cushioning. They are firmer, faster, and lighter than the Pegs. I think the Solar line from Adidas is a good daily trainer. I have the Solarglide and it's cushioned, but not quite on the UB level. Lighter and faster than the UB as well. However, I think that Adidas' best everyday shoe is actually a Reebok. The Forever Floatride Energy 2.0 is spectacular and unbeatable for $100 usd. Very cushioned and only 9.8 ounces in my size 10.5 US.

Two class running enthusiasts in one review? Count me in! ‘Interesting to hear/watch where you agree and disagree. I enjoy my UB19s, but I’m certain the UB20 runs better based on the ISS pair I use as a casual shoe. I don’t think they shaved BOOST, I think they further compressed it as they still claim 20% more BOOST than the OG. Now, my faster paces happen in an appropriate adi-model... the adizero TS6. I can run fast in the UB, but what I get from it is more comfort. I scale back to the Solar Glide when I want a bit lighter with the cushion. Both BOOST shoes save my joints. Do more of these but also take a quick moment to actually describe your running styles. Be well, solebrothers.

Nah bro, you're completely right. The shoe doesn't make sense. Maybe if they spread some of that boost foam to the forefoot it could be considered an ultra cushion recovery shoe but as it stands now, it's like running with a brick attached to your heel held on by the stretchiest fabric ever. I have no idea how people get any kind of lockdown in the ultra boost. The first time I made a lateral movement in my ultra boost 19s, the shoe flipped completely around my foot and was upside down just like a sock. I mean, if you can find a pair for less than $75 bucks then it might make an okay lifestyle shoe but if you're looking for an actual running shoe with a TPU bead sole (like boost) get the Saucony Triumph. It's softer, lighter and newer technology. It's boost done right honestly.
