Ultimate Tire Guide for Your Tesla: Prepare for Your First Set Now!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Time for tires on our 2022 Tesla Model Y Performance. Many tips for your Tesla Model 3 as well. Does Tesla make tires? Did we go with Michelin? Pirelli? How long did the first set last? How much do the new ones cost? Which tires did we buy? What tire shop did we take it to? Plus tread depth gauge, should you get an alignment, tire pressures, warranty certificates, appointment tips, and more. Plus our thoughts on Discount Tire / America's Tire for getting tires for your Tesla.
Note: Tesla's original rear alignment set up causes the inner tire wear and they won't do another alignment if it's already at factory spec. Luckily the tires needed replacing anyway, regardless of the inner wear. You need an aftermarket suspension solution to correct the inner wear issue permanently.

I agree with getting the warranty. I’ve always done that first thing. 👌🏼
I also prefer buying my tesla MYP tires from Costco as their tire insurance and rotation are included in the price and often have 150 off michelin tires when you buy 4. Last time, I put 295/35/21 in the back and 275's in the front, and I love the box look.
Important topic. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I totally agree with you about the staggered rotation and the inner edge wear. Unless your car is heavier on one side than the other.
Thanks for sharing. I have the performance model as well, the rear tires always wear after. Have you ever tried tire rack? They usually have rebates. I believe as of today, they have an active rebate. Drive safe 👍🏽

Thanks for the tip! Tire Rack is owned by Discount Tire now, so it's gotta be awesome!
Interesting. Thanks. I have the model 3 standard, so i can actually rotate. But discount tire said my highest possible cost will be $1200 for full replacement of all 4 tires with the most expensive options. I'm at 16k miles now and drive Uber so I'll need new tires in about 6 weeks at my rate. I'll let you know my experience. Keep up with the videos!

Tesla charged me $1,250 for 2 new front tires and a front end alignment (hit a big pot hole which misaligned my front end causing severe feathering wear on the tires). I'm going back to Tesla again. They were $400 a piece. Nevertheless, another great video. Thank you.

Good to know.
Here in SFLA I prefer to buy from Costco and they cover the 6,250 mile rotations. I have a set of lifting pads and do mention to their service that I have my own lifting pads so if they don't have them my car does not get damaged. The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S Summer are the best here for heat and rain. The Pirelli tires that came on the 2022 Model 3 Performance were terrible. I hated them.
I have to be honest, my brother as the MY Performance too and I just couldn't deal with only changing two tires at a time and not traditionally rotating the tires. I just bought the MY LR w/19" wheels, picking up Sat so excited, and I'm glad that I can rotate the tires. I'm trading in a Cadillac XT5 with 60,200 miles on it and I still have the stock tires on it because of rotating the tires every 7500 miles. I don't mind buying all 4 tires at the same time, looks like a set of 4 tires are going to run me about $1200.00 to $1300.00 here in NJ. I'm good with that and hope I can get them to last a good 50k miles due to rotating them every 6500 to 7500 miles.
@TeslaTipsTrips I've had my staggered directional tires on my Model Xs "Flip-Rotated" side-to-side at Discount Tire for years. It doesn't work for all types of tires, specifically, asymmetric tires in which one side has to be mounted on the outside of the wheel at all times.
@TeslaTipsTrips
5 ай бұрын
Thanks, I'll have to check my Michelin's, I believe they say 'Inside' and 'Outside' on them. I appreciate the heads up.
When you swap the tires from side to side, it is important to keep them in the same direction so they have to be dismounted, mounted, and balanced
@IDNHANTU2day

That's what I thought. I wonder why he did not mention that. I used to ride a motorcycle and the tires had arrows on them to make sure they are mounted right.
@pentanotesable
10 ай бұрын
@@IDNHANTU2day yeah, so based on what I can tell the tires are actually going opposite than what they should. There is something called directional wear. So you should probably get that reversed. I’m very happy with my choice
@TeslaTipsTrips
10 ай бұрын
This would make sense, however the tires say ‘Inside’ and ‘Outside’ on them. So this wouldn’t work.
@famousamos1
10 ай бұрын
@@TeslaTipsTrips you posted the manual at 7:44 mark. It says it can increase tread life by changing the direction of the rotation and balancing shoulder wear. So @pentanotesable comment is wrong that it’s important to keep the tires in the same tire rotation if rotating side to side because of the staggered tire setup on MYP.
To add, the stock tires tend to over steer and ride rougher
I just wanted to add, to check the manufactured date on tires . I noticed that the tires were made on the 2222 (14:36) .. meaning sometime in May of 2022. Sometimes dealers will sell tires that are old ..

Tesla uses the Kumho and Hankook EV tires on the vehicles made at Shanghai. I'm waiting for someone to do a long-term test on them to see if they last any longer.
@TeslaTipsTrips

I noticed that on our rental Y in Europe last year. It had Kumho on them, but it was brand new. Thanks for watching!
32,000 isn't bad for Michelin tires. On my Cadillac ATS I was never able to get more than 20k out of them. Discount tire always gave me some for warranty but I still had go to all the trouble of replacing them. What brands are good for tread wear ?
@TeslaTipsTrips

I'm not sure, I like these Michelin's so that's why I stuck with them. Thanks for watching. (I have Falken's on my Model 3, I like those)
Performance sport tires are expensive! Prolly could get a longer wearing l, better riding tire than the particular model you got. Also, higher profile for smaller diameter, square stance wheels would offer some savings on tires too, plus would allow front to rear rotations as well.

I know this is an old video and it probably got addressed in a more recent one, But knowing how other humans are, he is right; it's not the alignment that is causing this, its the rim size. The toe pitch on all of the 21 inch wheels are off. By going down to the 19s this problem goes away. There is a company that sells a kit to fix the issue but you'll have to be confident in your ability to work on cars.

How much is an alignment usually for a Tesla? I’m a new owner of one and coming up on 6k miles and I’m not to sure what the normal price is or should be compared to the service center, plus where to go?

I'm not actually sure. Model 3 with 57k miles, Model Y with 42k miles, haven't needed one yet. I want to say I've seen them around $300. I'd probably go elsewhere. Thanks for watching.
And Did the new Michelins come with foam in them?if not….. did you notice a difference in the road noise?

Just new rear today 34,882 miles. When with Falken 460 295/35z21. Very happy with the new look. 90% on chill mode with MYP. 1200 miles towing. So anyone that says that these tires don’t last … they are full of 💩. Probably have another 10k on front tires.

Of course it does, but it's always good to check using a real pressure gauge. I find on mine, it's about 1-2 pounds off
My all-wheel drive 3 has the same size tires all around. I didn't realize the performance has different tires front and back. I guess that's good and bad. PS... I only got 17k out of my factory michelins on a 3 all-wheel drive. Not sure why. paid around 1100 at Discount tire for a full set of pirelli pZeros.

Performance Model is a staggered set up. Different sizes in front and back. My fronts were virtually new still, I'm certainly not changing brand new tires out, just because the rears wear out faster due to a terrible suspension setup from Tesla.

You should have got the correct size tire of 295x35x21. I always price match Walmart which are always significantly cheaper. who would ever pay $2500 for 4 tires for a MYP when you can get brand new wheels and tires from Tsportline for 3k. I will be purchasing a 19" wheel and tire setup from TSportline when it is time for tires on my MYP.

@@TeslaTipsTripsI just put an order for a 2023 MYP. I watched Tsportline showing a MYP swap out to a 10” TS5 wheel because it weighs 26lbs vs 21” Uberturbine wheel front 38lbs and back 39lbs. This was fugly looking but if you’re trying to increase 20 more miles of range then that’s what you get fugly! Lol If anything I would do their 20” TSR wheel 30lbs or 20” TSV wheel 35lbs similar look to Uberturbine so you can keep all 4 tires the same size especially if you really don’t use the Performance of the MYP.
If four tires cost over 2k how much a car should cost?
Dont like the weight of the p wheels.. I run light 19 inch wheels and cross climate 2 tires

You did a video of magback and how amazing it is, yet you did not have them on your front tires even though u were only changing the back ones and not the fronts. Did u ever had them on? Nice review. I’ve been “that guy” about the valve caps once. I’m big on aesthetics. I thought the guys may have swiped my shiny ones for the black plastic ones. I was really upset because I thought it was so petty. What I discovered is that the have both on hand and they easily lose them. I quickly apologized for making a big deal out of it. These tires were specifically made for Tesla. They worked together with Tesla’s engineers on these particular tires. The inner wear is due to the way the suspensions camber is set up for the Performance Model. You are absolutely correct about purchasing the warranty from America’s tire. They do an excellent job and will honor the warranty without and drama. Money well spent. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camber_angle
