ULTIMATE Simulator Experience - Building 180° Curved Screen for Space and Flight Sims

Ойындар

It’s finally happening! I got the projectors and materials and I’m building a 180 degree curved screen into my setup, to be used with different flight and space simulators (Star Citizen, DCS, Flight Simulator etc). This video is the build process and gameplay videos will come later.

Well done fella, this is really nice... just some finishing issues that you already know about. The hard work and dedication to this shouldn't go unnoticed and you chose to spend money where it counted for you. I love VR but can't afford it, if a giant pile of money fell in my lap though, it would be spent on a nice wrap around setup such as yours along with all the hard work that goes with it! Be proud and looking forward to seeing some more in game footage!

Looks amazing. Having been a flight sim nerd back in the 90s and only recently getting back into it, I could never have imagined we'd be here today. I have a pretty modest set up but loving the hobby so much I wonder which path I'll go down in the future. I'm using a cheap head tracker and really like it with a 4k screen, but I've also tried a friend vr which is incredibly emersive but lacks fidelity. I think I'll wait a few years to see where the tech goes before making a decision, but my feeling is that vr will be much much better in 10 years with good pass through to use a home cockpit.

Excellent job! Some years ago made my own projection screen using the diy maxxmudd paint formuler with silver added. It turned out amazing as I could use the screen in the daytime or with the lights on but obviously looked amazing in a dark room. When experimenting with the paint initially I had a light grey paint mix but settled on quite a dark grey mix. Thought it was too dark at first with the projector off but with the projector on everything looked perfect even the whites. The benefit of having the darker grey was that the blacks were even deeper and more "tv like", much better for space sims. The projector settings are just as important for fine tuning as I found I could tweak the advanced settings to get the blacks looking even better without crushing the dark details so well worth experimenting. Good luck man.

Very nice will done, Who haven't dreamed of such a setup. I must say I'm past 50 and I'm at that age I might be able to afford such a setup. One of my main problems is the heat and the noise it will make. I have spend years with a lot of Computer fan noise to cool my PC's and the heat that becomes a major problem in the summer. The last few years, I have a totally silent water-cooled PC with 14 fan's and 2 pumps. And for me it was really shocking, that I could relax and have no fan noise around me for hours. I used to go to bed after hours of gaming with a buzz in my head or have pressure and a warm head from the headphones.

I was using a setup like this back in 2009 😅 I do miss it but a vr headset sorts it for me now

Awesome work, buddy! Keep up the good work. I'm actually working towards a similar project myself, so your video was quite inspirational. Can I ask what model of Optima projectors you chose for your sim? Do you struggle with sharpness warping between the edges of each of the projected images and the center of each image? I imagine the projector optics is optimized for a flat surface, so I wonder if projecting onto a curved surface could call for some compromises on the overall sharpness.

Hey. I'm using Optima UHD35STx projectors. There are naturally some issues with sharpness. It's not perfect, but I prefer the immersion of a curved screen.

That is brilliant! Would you let us know how did you fix the middle part (where both panels connects to each other)? Also, another question that I have is have you thought about the heating and comfort during winter months?

  • @UndeadParrot

I actually didn't manage to solve the middle gap issue that well. Might end up re-painting the screen with darker paint and fixing it there. We have geothermal heating at our house so it won't get cold. Actually winter might be the most comfortable time since all the stuff creates so amazing amounts of heat. :D

4:53 I had to laugh at that comment regarding you son's help. ^^ Glad that you didn't force him to help to let it look like you're the uber father of an uber family. Great build. I'm not that much into gaming anymore but with a simulator like this...hmmm, pretty appealing.

Really cool vid love how you show the creation steps too. Wish I had a workshop basement. Have you thought about using VR with pass through so you can still see your Simpit? I’d be interested to know if anyone has

This is such a nice setup, both the screen and cockpit. Congratulations on your amazing work! Have you tried running MSFS2020? I'm wondering if the game is compatible with such a curved screen.

Wow, very impressive mate. I have 3 screens myself and had a quick go playing SC with nvidia surround, but found the distorion/warping of the FOV-edges quite extreme. You mentioned something about LUA, did you manage to reduce or negate that issue?

Unfortunately not with Star Citizen. Lua files are something DCS uses and there the view is really amazing.
