Ultimate Road Trip Toolbox - Too Much is Just Enough...

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This box holds what I've come up with over the years as my ultimate travel box. Talk about stuffing 10 pounds of $#!t into a 5 pound bag! Trying to anticipate what you may need while broken down on the side of the road is tough, but hopefully with the essentials you have a fighting chance at repair. Would also make a great box for junkyard parts hunting!
As I mentioned in the vjo, this kit does not contain a lot of the essential vehicle specific tools, like a lug wrench, distributor wrench, spare parts, fluids, etc. This is meant to be a traveling "mini master" tool set. Your individual vehicle may require some unique additions.

I have a couple of different things in mine . It’s more of a survivalist box ! I added a 22 cal. AR-7 and ammo , tarp , knife , road flares , bungees and a couple of MRE’s I don’t have rubber hose or pullers or more then 4 screwdrivers and i almost forgot in each vehicle I have blankets and a tarp ( orange ) and some MRE’s and water . Same box and mine weighs 60 lbs ! Must be those Canadian tools weight more or something, when are you EVER going to use all those small size sockets ? NEVER ! Everything else is great 👍. You know if you live in the north woods anything can happen ! Except maybe running over a crocodile ! Lol. But I did hit a bear once ! SKOL BUD !

I"m sure the SnapOn truck wanted $50 for the divider up top. But you do get a lifetime warranty. I bet the free HF voltmeter was even more expensive as you can't get out of HF without spending a benjamin $. The metric adjustable wrench/hammer is a must. If you flip it over it'll do SAE sizes.

In the tool box and tote I travel with I keep each of the rolls of tape in a zip lock sandwich bag, they don't dry out and last forever. A straight cut avaition snip has all sorts of uses, trimming fingernails, turning a beer cans into shims, or the box into a gasket, cutting harvest info on your deer tag, A $15 eBay 12 volt fuel pump works well with that spare gas line. Using a small soft aluminum tube I salvaged off some dead refrigeration equipment, , maby 3 feet long, I have been able to bypass the roll over valve in a gas tank and pump out gas out of a donor car.. With that I keep a brand new, never used 2 gal plastic gas tank full of water. Fill up a radiator, or drink it if thirsty enough. Beware though, the women will never go for that, the simply can not be convinced it is fresh water. She will think you are trying to kill her, don't ask. Dump the water out if you need gasoline. I relpace the adjustment bolt on the vice grips with a eye bolt. Instant anchor point and it is easier to tork down on. A harbor freight moving blanket.lines the trunk. It beats working on the dirt, and can even be used as a blanket. Also from HF I have a small flash light with a powerfull magnetic base. Taped to a stick it is a magnetic pickup tool. I find a 15 foot length of 12 gauge house wire very useful . With hose clamps and vice grips it is jumper cables, it can tie down a load, or trunk or hood , can be used to tow a stuck car a short distance, , Strip the plastic and tie up a muffler, or open a car door when the keys are locked in it. It makes a good third hand to hold a flashlight or something, I use a single insulated wire to organize my sockets fish stringer style. I also spray paint each stringer a different color, ie red is 1/2 inch drive SAE, green is 3/8 drive metric ect. I do the same with the wrenches. It is a functional emergency dog leash. All this takes up very little space and weighs almost nothing .

Man, this was just like going through my own road box! In my main truck, I had enough room to carry a cheap 700 watt inverter under the seat and one of those small 3 gallon air compressors from Harbor Freight in the tool box. Takes a while, but helps a lot if you are miles from your main air compressor and need to air up a flat tire on a trailer, for example. Just pop the hood and run it straight off the truck battery.

Just got the craftsman box with tools. I'm going to put handles on the sides. Tough because its double walled with 1/2" gap and not a lot of space between the rails inside. I took a set of heavy handles off a Harbor Freight 26" US General to;p box. Nice handles. The Craftsman box is nice for the money, the set of tools with it is probably a $80 set at best. Its got all 3 size drives, but too many 12pt 1/2 sockets and tiny wrenches. Other than that, the box allows tons of room to add tools.

Exactly what is the purpose of the all the tools in your tool box? If you are a mobile auto shop, well then, you probably got it covered; however, if you are trying to compile a "basic" car repair tool kit, what you showed, IMO is overkill. For example, some of the tasks mentioned (i.e. tire bead seating, etc.) shoud be left to a tire shop. My son and I took a 1994 Buick with 200,000 miles on the odometer on a 2,000 mile road trip and we got by with a fraction of the tools you showed. Sure, having a needed tool is nice, but yikes. Just my two-cents.

If I have to carry 78 lbs of tools on a road trip, I might just rent a car. Unless you absolutely want to go with your own car, I would check to make sure my car is good before going on a trip. The other reason people need all these tools may be some long haul truckers, or someone like that.
