This video should have way more thumbs up than it does. I really like the way this video was made, and I like the assessment of everything.
YES YES YES preach! The ring 2002 is so significantly scarier than the original. The original I found eerie, the 2002 remake stopped me from sleeping

Yeah people claim that the original is scarier but I found it to just be interesting. The Ring 2002 was my first ever horror movie, and I couldn't sleep or close my eyes ever without being in terror.

@@OBrasilo it's probably because you watched the original first. The original has some elements that could be considered more eerie, but in terms of an art piece the remake does a better job at juggling everything perfectly. The story is much more unsettling and the tone and atmosphere is much darker.
Today is a rainy dreary day and I have a major deadline at work - thank you so much for providing such great content to listen to while I work. I love your description and passion for these films ❤
Well you'd never expect a Ring entry be described as a comfy cosy delight.😂
I’m glad I’m not the only one that has a good time with Sadako 3D
Loved the video dude! Nice to hear someone fully appreciate the masterpiece that is The Ring (2002)
HEY THERE! I'M on a Rotted Review binge today!
Crikey, another marathon watchathon undertaken so that we don't have to! I thank you sir! As to the Sadako Vs Samara (or Ringu vs Ring) question, it's Sadako/Ringu all the way for me. The dark griminess of it, the hints of Lovecraftian communion with things from the sea, that genuinely terrifying reveal of the fish like eye in the denouement...glitchy static girl just can't compete, for my money. Great (not to mention impressive on an endurance level) review of the series Mike. Oh, and a very happy new year to you too!

i agree there plus the wet look of her and the fact they made her a little girl is too cliche for me to enjoy the ring is a competent movie for a remake and i enjoyed it but the original is superior in just about every way

Hell yeah, what a fun way to start the new year! unfortunately I'll have to skip parts of it to avoid spoilers for the ones I haven't seen (Korean and TV shows), but I can't wait to binge most of it later! I wanted to drop a comment now though to help out with the algorithm, and to thank you for the years of quality horror content! Excited to see what comes our way from you this year!

Thank you for the comment and the share! I kept each entry spoiler-free, but everyone's definition of that varies, so I totally understand wanting to wait. 😄
Oh wow, what a treat. I just rewatched the American remake of both the grudge and the ring over the Xmas holidays funnily enough. Also planning to watch the Japanese inspirations for both in the coming days - so this is perfectly timed lol. Will also give me a good idea of which sequels (if any) to check out.
1:04:06 Hey, look! It's the face I made when I found out how many entries this franchise has.

And the novel had the same investigative aspect as the US remake, that's where it got it from. Rachel finding the lighthouse fron the tape in a book called Lighthouses of America = Kazuyuki finding the volcano from the tape in a book called Volcanoes of Japan, and Rachel and Noah finding Samara's psychograms in thal archive = Kazuyuki and Ryuji finding Sadako's psychograms in Dr. Miura Tetsuzu's ESP archive.
Had no idea I had missed so much of this series!

Great work! I truly appreciate the time and effort that goes into these Series Reviews. It also opens up doors to other films I didn't know even existed, such as Bunshinsaba VS Sadako.
Great vid! You know I always assumed it was more years seperating the original "Ringu" and the US adaptation.
An interesting thing to note about Ring 2 (1999) is that it coincidentally shares some elements with Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors: *Both films are the 3rd entries in the franchise but act as a sequel to the first film because Film 2 in the franchise (Rasen and Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge) flopped *Both films brought the first film's heroine back only to kill them off towards the end - and the way they are killed off is similar because it involves the ghost of their father i.e. they see their father's ghostly form and then bam they're dead *Both films have the main characters explore ways of defeating the character with a bit of scientific and medical knowledge since they work with doctors and para-psychologists *Both films also involve the villain's ghostly mother interacting with the main characters to a degree *Both films not only show the villain's burial site but also their decomposed form having risen from the grave, only for them to be pushed back down into it *There's also a psychic child in both films and they both survive to the end of the film *The villain in both films likes to feed off the fear they cause to their victims and so they go hungry when in the final act, the protags overcome their fears *Although both films see the villain defeated, they both end on a cliffhanger suggesting they haven't entirely gone away

Oh for the love of... The phone call was consistent everywhere other than the 1998 movie, and in the novel, 1996, both radio dramas, and The Ring Virus, the tape ends with a written message clearly warning you of how much you have left.
you are an amazing talker and very charismatic, thank you for this video
great video as always
We need a truly accurate adaptation of the novels so we can finally get an adaptation of Loop.
Great video. I binged the whole franchise this summer, and the only one I couldn't get through was the Rasen TV series.
This video is amazing!!!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
One thing about the book version of Ryuji (Spoilers for Ring books): He casually says he SA’d three women, but in Spiral the coroner sees his dead body and concludes that Ryuji’s genitals are small to an extremely notable degree, and likely far too small to ever even be with a woman, i.e, he had medically defective genitalia and his comments likely stemmed from insecure immaturity around his manhood. He’s portrayed as intelligent but also having an eccentric and potentially neurodivergent mental disposition, so it’s not out of left field to suggest he made that all up (which the first book implies and the sequel seemingly confirms via the coroner report). Still a weird-ass character trait and I’m not sure what the author was trying to get at, but it’s more likely Ryuji was just highly insecure and traumatized from his impotence that he felt the need to make up for it with outrageous stories. I’m glad all the movies omitted it-it’s just too weird.
Love the video. My first intro was the American The Ring, and it's also my favourite.
This was a fantastic watch, even better to find out that I think I agree with you on the top three movies (of the ones I have seen anyway). Suppose it's time to revisit the top two and see…
Actually, the most accurate adaptation is the 2012 BBC radio drama. There is also the Japanese TBS radio drama from 1996 and that deviates a lot from the novel.
You should do an ultimate breakdown of the classic 80s slashers like Freddy Michael Jason chucky
I also remember the US version completely terrifying me as a kid. 💯 When they open the closet door to that girls distorted face, with the musical sting, nightmare fuel!! 😂😂
When you first said you liked the American remake over the OG I was suprised since it veered so far from the source, then I remembered you said you didn’t much care for the source and it made sense
I prefer Sadako to Samara, bc Sadako in her original timeline has more character development, Samara tho is just a cliche scary kid. And I love corny 90's and early 2000's japanese horror jpop soundtracks, it brings back memories of my youth watching campy early 2000's jhorror on DVD. And Birthday when I first saw it made me cry more than I should have bc of the tragedy and I was bullied when I was young
I have yet to see everything Ring related, but I personally loved The Ring Virus the most, which I know is not a very popular opinion, it taking elements from all prior adaptations that were looser and then making a more book faithful version was everything I could have asked for from a ring movie, although on the fear factor level I have to say that the 1998 movie is still king
Don’t wanna be THAT guy lol, buuuuut there’s actually some Chinese adaptations not covered in this video, lol: Bunshinsaba vs Sadako, Bunshinsaba vs Sadako 2, and Sadako Wars: Bixian vs Kayako 😂😇
Great video! Informative, interesting, intelligent, and most importantly - not obnoxious! Which is rare and greatly appreciated on KZread. Love your work man. Also loved your Ju-on one

One of my favorite franchises. Very few people have watched every single iteration including the 2 TV series, so I commend you! I will say Sadako DX is one of the only sequels to so something different / progress the story...but beyond that is much more of a parody than a horror film. There is a torrent out there but it is quite hard to find - still working on my own subs file for it. Quality-wise, the only truly good films here (imo) are Ring (1998), Ring 0 (2000), and The Ring (2002). I also have enjoyment for Kanzenban (1995), Rasen (1995), the 2 TV series (1999), Sadako 3D 2 (2013), and Sadako vs. Kayako (2016). If you really wanna go down the rabbit hole, check out the Dreamcast game The Ring: Terror's Realm, and the multiple unofficial Chinese spinoffs. Or maybe don't. 🤣 Edit: I really appreciate your attention to and respect for cultural and pronunciation stuff. You definitely have a new sub!

Thank you so much, I really appreciate the kind words! I actually watched a few minutes of one of the games, but decided that didn't need to be an element of this video. 😂
At last someone i can agree with on my love for 2002's the ring, one of my top horror films ever, and the one that pointed me in the j-horror direction
To me, super-personally, the books are far superior, having said that... the movies differ too much (except for the TV one and the second one that was released at the same time as RIngu) and I enjoy them a lot, but I try not to think about them as adaptions of the Ringu novels. I agree with all your ratings, and now I think I have to see the series now.
I can definitely agree that The Ring definitely is a much scarier iteration than Ring. I feel that while the stories are so similar yet so different at the same time, the American remake really emphasizes the terror of the situation while Ring emphasized more the mystery and the internal drama of the main characters, both creating a very unique and captivating watch. Kinda funny to see how no country could really crack the code of how to make a sequel worth watching though (Ring 2 and 0 be damned though they were actually alright, just needed to reel it back with revealing the curse)
The Ring is better than Ringu except for the climax, especially the score. Also, The Ring 2 (usa) is basically a parody of Dark Waters but is surprisingly much more visually interesting than most Hollywood horror
solid

Thank you so much!!
The American remake of the Ring definitely shaped me as a movie lover. I agree that's it's easy the best and most terrifying version of the character. I hate hate hate the revisionist history of the sequels that change her birth story and rob it of the horror it had, like, they completely missed the point. I've read the original book and seen all of these expect the made for tv and miniseries, Sadako and Sadako DX (can't find them!) and it's largely not a great time but that first experience got me obsessed. For me the American remake and the Japanese original are worthwhile and the rest are interesting curiosities. Though Even I can't deny the demented pleasure of taking a franchise where the iconic scene is a character crawling out of a screen and turning it into a 3d series, it's a no brainer. But having her nemesis be someone whose power is destroying screens by screaming is SO FUNNY I just can't. Like I can see the creative brainstorming that got them there and it's so stupid and hilarious. Probably the best thing to come out of those later Japanese films was the baseball match publicity stunt 😆Anyway Awesome video! My final rankings would probably be the same except I'd have Sadako Vs Kayako down a little bit more!

@@RottedReviews That was TERRIBLE. And AMAZING. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Oh man their dance is so lame, ain't got nothing on Backstreet's Back.
I haven't finished the video yet and might not given that some of the later Ring movies are still on my, "To watch some time... someday... maybe?" list, but re: the pronunciation and spelling of Ring. I don't believe I've ever heard it said, "Ring-ah." It is Ringu-- At least with a literal spelling. In Japanese, it's written in katakana which is the syllabary for loan words. The three characters used in the title are, リング -- ri n gu. As weird as it feels to "mispronounce" words like you're making fun of the accent, that's how it's said/spelled using the appropriate Japanese syllabary. (Granted, my Japanese is pretty garbage, so take that with a grain of salt.)

Finished the video bc there was never much in the way of spoilers. (God forbid Sadako vs Kayako or Ring 3D is spoiled for me.) Totally agree on the US remake being the best. I tend to hate remakes of foreign language films, and maybe I'm biased since I have fond memories of watching this in the theater as a kid and being absolutely terrified. It was a gateway drug to foreign horror for me, but I distinctly remember ordering the book and original movie as a kid and being super underwhelmed. I'm 99.9% sure I even read Spiral, though I couldn't tell you a thing about it except for tossing it to the floor of the school bus bc I was mad that 1. Ryuji was still alive and 2. He was still the worst.
Wait you know about Sadako DX (2022) right?

horror in the new year,
👍👍😎😎
I think The Ring Two's issues might just be director incompetence. Look at the Matrix sequels. Its easy to blame the studio if you make a bad movie.
Man, Americans do love their remake of "Ring". Back in early 2000's, I watched the Japanese film first, only many years later I watched the American "The Ring", so I can concede I have a special liking to my first viewing. However, I loathe the green filter of the American remake, it's simply an ugly movie to watch, and a lot of aspects don't really translate well into an American audience. Also, the last act of the movie is vastly inferior to the Japanese original film and that for me is unforgivable.
I rank them the following (all of them) 1. Ring 2. Ring 0 Birthday 3. Rasen/Spiral 4. Ring Kanzenban 5. Ring 2 6. Sadako 7. Sadako vs Kayako 8. Sadako 3D 2 9. The Ring 2 10. The Ring Virus 11. Sadako 3D 12. Rings 13. Sadako DX 14. The Ring (yeah I don't like how that shit remake misses everything that makes Ring special - only good things ars the blue filter that is just unnecessary but artistically interesting and the horse kamikaze scene on the ship because it's so dumb it's entertaining again)
The American Ring 2 is honestly of the worst films I’ve ever seen.
