Ultimate Historical Hair Care Guide | Straight, Curly & Kinky

Are you interested in achieving long, thick and healthy hair? Look no further! In this informative video, I'll be your guide to historical hair care practices with routines for all hair types.
I’m Katherine, and since the overwhelming response to my previous video on natural historical hair care, I've received numerous requests for personalized tips, especially for those with straight or finer hair.
Today, we'll delve into natural techniques rooted in historical hair care that can help you maintain your hair's natural oils, reduce breakage and improve scalp health. By following these methods without relying on expensive chemical-laden products, you can achieve longer, thicker and healthier hair.
My personal routine for natural hair care involves using essential ingredients like rhassoul clay, oils and apple cider vinegar rinses. I also prefer finger detangling my mostly dry hair. Throughout this video, we'll discuss how you can customize these fundamental principles to suit any type of hair.
📚 Access the written versions of these routines by downloading the PDFs found in this blog post: bit.ly/hairpdfs
Please note that while I personally follow a "no poo" routine using only rhassoul clay for cleansing purposes; shampoo is not necessarily “evil.” If you’d like to use shampoo in addition to clay washing or if you require a conditioner, I have some recommendations for you. You can find the suggestions linked below.
Let's begin our exploration of customized haircare routines for different hair types like curly, straight, wavy and kinky. We will also delve into adapting natural haircare methods such as clay washing and oil treatments to cater to the specific requirements of each hair type. So, let's start this journey!

Great tips! I thought for the longest time that kinky hair “couldn’t grow” then I came across kinky textured naturals with long hair and I started rethinking that. I realized that it’s not that our hair “couldn’t grow” it was that we tended to damage our hair through chemical straightening, and harsh handling. Anyway I got locks for a little more than a year before I took them out and my hair was able to retain length while in that style. My hair is now to my shoulders! Now I’m learning to continue to maintain it

I tried clay washing, didn’t like it. But i loved shampoo tea wash; I use yucca root powder, Amia , horsetail, ginger toot, hibiscus, and aloe Vera. Rinse with a herbal tea rinse or a apple cider herbal rinse. This my hair loves. It’s definitely trial and error, not everything works for everyone.

Yes, definitely an experiment to find what works. My hair didn't really like ACV, but have gone to fenugreek and amla, rosemary, tea mist to maintain curls between washes and my hair and scalp can soak up oils more when the shafts are open. Oh and learned gently heat oils before applying for treatments. ❤ The journey.

I am a guy with long hair and I really love all of your advice and insight. I'm a bit unusual in that I have an affinity for ancient history and I tend to mix ancient history into my modern wardrobe. Whether that be during the winter and I'm wearing my leather custom made Hussars jacket like the cavalry officers wore during the Napoleonic Wars along with punk rock pants and repros of hedwby viking boots with rubber soles and antler bone toggles. Lol Or during the summer with shorts and Roman Emperor sandals.... So naturally I was attracted to historical hair care and I hadn't ever really thought about it or considered it but after watching a few of your videos I went into some serious research and found everything you said yo be spot on. Shampoo really is bad for your hair and it's the cause of a lot of people's balding, etc. So, I took your advice and got the things I needed and dove in. I'm on week 2 and I've washed my hair very similar to the way you teach and I can say that my kicks look more natural, they're doing their own natural curling, my scalp feels better and my hair looks and feels healthier. So I just wanted to let you know that I'm a guy and you helped me out and I appreciate it. Thank you for the great content and advice and it shows that you really dove into learning all of this. Thank you for sharing and I subscribed and I'll keep watching your content.

Yes! I was just wondering how this would affect curly gray hair since going gray changes the structure of the hair so drastically. Mine is now fairly low porosity, the textures mixed (some strands thin, fine while others coarse, thick). My hair is much dyer, frizzier, in constant need of moisture, and the canopy rarely holds a curl. Even my curl pattern has changed. Plus, I'm allergic to most hair and skin care products now. The struggle is real! 😑

    @LadyLovelyLox7777 ай бұрын

As a wavy girl, I did find it humorous that you spent lots of time on most hair types - until it came to wavy. Yes, we have all sorts - and it’s all temperamental! Due to the different porosity levels, strand thickness, and everything else in between, managing waves is a different type of challenge. 😂 Mine is classic length - I have a lot of hair on my scalp BUT my strands are baby fine. So it tangles and mats within a day if left wavy - with or without a gel product. So I live in braids most of the time. One thing I’ve discovered that helps give my hair more structure (due to each strand being SO fine - which in turn means split ends on every single strand no matter what) is to boil flax seeds in rosemary, calendula, and lavender hydrosol. Once it had thickened up some, I strain out the seeds and add a splash of ACV. It acts as a scalp treatment and hair protectant at the same time! (After this I use a leave in conditioner and seal with a bit of oil) It gives my hair a “corse”-like texture without being rough - and it doesn’t feel dry. It might just be a “cast” on my hair BUT it does seem to help prevent some breakage because it lends it a bit of strength.

I avoided clays for years of trying no poo/curly methods-but I started to use rhassoul clay because of Katherine’s original video last fall…never going back! My hair is wavy fine low porosity (easily weighed down and oily) and golden brown. I use a mix of a couple tsp of rhassoul clay + seaweed powder + dash of ACV in a big glass of filtered water. I put it all in an applicator bottle. I wash 2 times with this (using most of the mix during the first wash), I focus mainly on gently scrubbing the scalp and rinse very well after the second application. I then use an applicator bottle mixed with a small amount of ACV & filtered water (sometimes an herbal tea blend)…I rinse well and give my scalp a good shock of ice cold water (after I wash with the clay, I switch my hair to upside down rinse/style) and put in some leave-in (diy flax seed if I have on hand or ecoslay or kinky curly knot today) I plop with a t-shirt for a bit and then air dry. This gives me volume, strength and faster growing hair (or at least hair that isn’t breaking as much!) and I only have to wash about every 4-5 days!

I started this hair growth challenge in 2-29-24. My hair is naturally curly and the rhassoul clay is amazing for making my curls clump enough to make nice curls and not fuzzy! I have baby fine hair that loves to fly away and the oils help as well. Used ACV as rinse last week. This next wash I am going to use only aloe Vera juice in my final rinse. I am also taking photos post wash to see this growth. Your journey is inspirational. I tell you here I am so encouraged and excited for this challenge because I’ve had many bad haircuts, stylists telling me I don’t have curly hair. I also have many colic’s I have fought for many many years and now that I’ve just given in to them and now my curls are behaving, enough so that I am wearing my hair down and am receiving many compliments( which I am not used to).

  • @hllymchll

i just wanted to let you, and everyone curious, know that before i started this routine i washed my hair daily or every other day if i didnt go out. i have fine, medium density, dark, ever so slightly wavy but basically straight hair. i wash with a couple tsp clay mixed in about a cup of water and rinse with acv in a large mason jar with water (mostly water). from the first wash, i was able to go FIVE days between washes. no transition period. this is insanely long for me. my hair wasnt greasy at all and didnt even need dry shampoo until day 4. i didnt use protective hairstyles unless i was sleeping, so it was down everyday, and my hair still didnt get even remotely greasy until night 4. i thought it was a fluke, but nope. i can now go a solid 5 days without washing, again with no transition period. I'm sure if i were to actually take the time to put it up in the styles youve shown us, i could easily go a week or more between washes. thank you so much for your videos

I use Zote, a four ingredient natural historical soap from Mexico and South America. It can be used for your dishes your laundry your skin and your hair and I love it. It's made from lye from wood ashes water some kind of animal fat and a one - ingredient scent, citronella. It's like the strong white bar of soap that the victorians used. I think it clarifies pretty well and I like the smell. It can also clear up skin issues because of the natural lye and absence of petroleum products and poisons. I mostly use six different oils in coconut oil almost everyday and bentonite clay wash regularly for it's drying antibacterial properties but I like the bar soap to get rid of dead skin and dirt very very effectively.

Love!! I use 1/4 tsp of clay and maybe 1/2 tsp of acv to wash in 2 cups of water. I don't really have enough warm water in my home so i use the clay one and then the next night i mix 1:1 aloe gel and glycerine and condition my hair. After wash/condition i oil with shea, olive, castor. Then next morning I will very very lighter oil my scalp and hair with jojoba oil and spray with rose water. My hair is wavy/curly, thick strands, fairly thick, waist length. I also have a bit of grey but not a very noticeable amount, the greys are healthy and shiny without any yellowing.

Thank you for your videos! I found a lot of great things to hopefully help my hair. I recently had massive hair and scalp damage and loss from using an extremely well rated and loved "bio" loreal haircare line. It had formaldehyde in it! I was devastated. I had to cut my hair to chin length. I couldn't stand it, so I bought clip in extensions I only wear when I go out. While I don't know if I can get down with mixing products and clays, I did see your link for Calia products. I ordered a full set from them, along witha boar bristle brush, your recommended oils for hair and scalp separately. I think (hope) this will make a huge difference in my hair. Thank you So much for sharing the knowledge from your hair transformation journey! You may have just changed my life for the better.

I stumbled across your first hair video last winter quite by chance and have since incorporated as much of your advice I could to caring for my very fine, very thin, very straight hair. It'll look even better after I trim away my old, damaged hair from before this past year.

I use half cup of castille soap and 1 cup of aloe Vera water to dilute it. Aloe Vera is very moisturizing and great for growth and strengthening the hair. Castille soap is clarifying, good for cleansing. But too much of it will dry the hair, thus the aloe Vera water. I add my own herbal powders in it like amla, rosemary, and mint. For conditioner it’s just undiluted aloe Vera with herbs. I leave it on for 15min. I use Shea butter with herbs as my leave in and oil my scalp with and herbal oil I make. I trim my hair every 6 months. My hair is type 4

Just want to say that if you have dry or dehydrated skin on your scalp like me then scalp serums are really good, commercial or if you make your own tonics doesn't matter as long as it's hydrating for the skin. Hair really likes oil most of the time but your skin is alive and needs slightly different treatment. You can use facial serums too if you want. Things like hyaluronic acid or niacinamide are very good for this, salicylic acid too if you want some exfoliation too. If you only wash your hair once a week or go longer than that then I'd still recommend this. I myself have combination skin that's dehydrated and I use commercial washing products that work for me (once a week or longer) and it helps with itching and "dandruff" (the one that's caused by dry, flaking skin). The reason why I'm saying serum or tonic is bc while scalp oils can do good things (especially if they're formulated for use on skin) they're usually occlusive which means that they don't really sink into the skin as well as something lighter like certain oils and serums. Just like with other skin care the oil, if you use it, should be the last step in your scalp routine or before you wash your hair to protect your scalp. Oils like rosehip, hemp or jojoba are not as occlusive so I'd recommend using something like that after a serum/tonic. The point is to hydrate the skin then put a lid on it, so to speak, to keep the hydration in for healthy skin. This also means that you can use it on other parts of your body. That's all I wanted to add, I've had issues with my scalp being like this since my teens or so and when I was using head and shoulders every other day it was way too strong and made me bleed at one point so do remember to take care of that part of the body as well 😅

Trying to achieve healthier and some shine, hair which ive not seen … ever 😂 but definitely not since i was around 13 and worse since last juky/august when i did the relaxer then a month later did some curly perms 2 of them were done incorrectly and the third did the most to give me wave etc but still so much damage then i bleached again like a week ago to get a lighter brown colour hair instead of dry old looking black fading - and now its damaged even more!!

I currently put a little oil in it once a week and it will soaks it up and a big oil every few months and scrap his scalp with a comb to remove dead skin. However I am worried about product build up as his curls don’t seem to be as tight as they used to be. I currently use rhassoul clay and acv on me.

I'm not sure what you did. Putting baking soda (alkaline) and apple cider vinegar (acidic) together create a chemical reaction. So, if you used both simultaneously, that might be the reason for bad results. The amount of dilution is also a factor with both. Usually, baking soda dries out skin and hair as both need a more acidic environment. Apple cider vinegar helps balance the pH value, as skin and scalp are slightly acidic. The acid also helps close hair follicles after washing, while the enzymes from the apples have their own benefits (which is why you should be using raw acv with the mother still in it!). However, too much acid is also counterproductive. Dilution usually does the trick with ACV. Also, stay away from lemon juice, as this is too acidic and can bleach your hair (just saying, as some "great" DIYs online tend to use it) If you want to start somewhere safe, you can't go wrong with plain oils (jojoba, castor, olive, coconut… etc). Oils are a topical treatment that can be washed out and do not react chemically with your hair. Just make sure you are not sensitive/allergic to a specific oil if you apply it to your scalp. Be extra careful with peppermint oil - while great for some, it can irritate sensitive skin (the same goes for some other essential oils; when in doubt: put an undiluted drop on your arm and see what happens). I've done some damaging "natural recipes" myself, mostly from unresearched DIY videos with no background on the whys or specific uses. It can really harm you (it did for me; my brother, on the other hand, got a bad rash from commercial shampoo with peppermint extract). If you start looking into what your hair and skin are made of and what the effects of certain things are, the bad becomes easier to distinguish from the good :)

Boar bristle brushes are not intended to detangle hair. If your hair is thicker or curlier then work in small sections but it is not intended to glide through you hair like a comb. It's purpose is to remove dirt and spread oils. Her boar bristle brush video is great for this.

Boar bristle brushes did nothing for me (i have wavy hair.) I am very disappointed. I bought the first one you recommended in your description link and it was a whoppin $23 dollars. I don’t know about you, but that’s too much for one hair brush. Anyway, I was willing to take the risk, and unfortunately I regret it. I did everything you recommended. I probably brushed my hair over 100 strokes and my scalp was still oily. Same thing with rhassoul clay. Did not cleanse my hair at all. The no-poo method doesn’t work for everyone. Sure, try it out if you have the money, but I cannot tell you it worked for me

For the humane treatment of boars, maybe you can recommend wooden combs instead of boar brushes. What's more historical is combing. Boar brushes came around late 1700s but wood combs have been around since ancient times. I know boar brushing is historically accurate, I'd just hate for humans to further factory farm boars because humans are already testing on animals for products and factory farming animals for food. At least wood combs is less cruelty. Please look up how animals are treated before recommending them as products? Thank you. I love historical hair care.

There used to be a time where I tried to use all natural products, but I can't. I just can't. I flare-up like crazy due to seborrheic dermatitis. My father has it as well. Trust me, tried it all, absolutely *have to* use Nizoral 2% and Head and Shoulders and the harsher shampoos in between bouts. It just has to be this way, and I'm fine with it. I dry detangle, wash weekly (every Sunday). I do only have very slight waves but have incorporated a lot of tips from naturally curly hair gals and gents. It has helped the health of my hair, so much! I used to have hair down to my bum cheeks. Now it's bra strap. Busy. Life in general. Disability. It all got to me and the hair just had to go. It's just another season of life. I had classic length as a 10 year old also. I am now 51 and have had classic length for quite a number of years of my life. I love caring for my hair. It's a very soothing process. And I have the hair products to show for it? Yes. Yes I do. ;) :p

I have the same condition on my scalp (supposedly), but I am the complete opposite of you lol. Nizoral destroyed my scalp, made it flare up worse. My entire scalp was on fire. Then I switched to a Hemps brand shampoo, one that's all natural with cbd and tea trea oil. That has made a huge difference for my hair and scalp. I think the hemps one is discontinued unfortunately, but maybe another kind with cbd would help? I understand everyone is different, and if it doesn't work it doesn't work, but I saw your comment and thought I'd share what helped best for me. God bless!

Really looking forward to hearing what you've learned but I'm only a few mins in and feel the need to comment because you said you're not using commercial hair products because it has chemicals in. But your routine has loads of chemicals!!! For one, you're using water. Oil is also full of chemicals, as is the air you're using to dry your hair. Chemicals make up everything around us, we're made of chemicals even! The fear around chemicals is just fearmongering, designed to make people buy from the fearmongerer There is plenty of space for historical techniques and natural remedies today but we need to look at them from current scientific theory to improve our lives otherwise it can be to our detriment
