Ultimate Guide to the Shortcuts App (for the Mac)!
🩳 Download my Shortcuts here: www.jeffsu.org/macbook-shortc...
Although the Shortcuts app is already pretty popular on the iPhone, very few people use it on their Macbooks as well. So in this video I’ve put together the ultimate guide for the Shortcuts app on the Mac!
First, I go over all the ways you can activate and run Shortcut workflows on the Mac (since it’s actually not that obvious) and cover the settings changes you need to make
Then, I share 7 Shortcuts I use every single day that makes my life just so much easier (like hitting just 1 button to hide my entire desktop 😉)
My examples are great but what’s even better is for you to create Shortcuts specific to you, so I end the video by showing you how you can tweak existing workflows to fit your needs and how to share them with others!
Have fun 😁!

I see you're a man of culture as well. I spent literally 3 whole days just playing around with Shortcuts. @SoroushTorkian

@@JeffSu I made one shortcut doing exactly all of those tasks I mentioned above. It is called "what's going on today" In it, the following commands happen - Speak date - Speak weather for today (tell me actual temp, feels like temp rounded to the nearest ones digit, humidity, chance of preciptiation) -Speak calendar (An if command, modified it with a script such that it says synonyms for "and then" between each calendar event, otherwise says "There are no calendar events for today" - Speak reminders, similar script as calendar but using the reminders app. This needs tweaking if you need tomorrow's reminders or any sort of filtering on what sort of reminders you want to hear. My reminders are only set up for the dates I plan to start them, not the date they're due, which makes this set up easier for the shortcut to handle. Otherwise it says "there are no reminders for today" - Siri then prompts me "would you like to listen to podcasts, your morning music playlist, or nothing" in which case it listens for which one I say and acts accordingly to my response. (I think this one's a dictionary script action) You can then make an automation to run this shortcut after your alarm is turned off, but I don't recommend it if you sleep with your significant other and also because it's easy to forget to wear headphones if that's your circumstance.

Great walkthrough and tutorial Jeff! Sitting and trying to figure out a "Shortcut" that converts an image/photo using an program Pixelmator Pro from RAW to JPEG. Now, I'd like a folder being created with the name "jpeg" where all the original image files are stored and then once converted be put into or moved into the "jpeg" folder. The "original" image files are being stored in different place at times (desktop, downloads or an external SSD), thus the "path" to where the newly created "jpeg" folder is not static. How to solve this?

Hey Jeff, great video! Some useful tips in here for sure. I am looking to create an entire automation that does something like the following, could you let me know if it's possible? - Open a specified app - Type a given string (text input), followed by enter - Type another given string of text, followed by enter - Type a keyboard shortcut with modifiers - Switch to another app - Text input, followed by enter - Paste from clipboard - Repeat 3-4x with various different text inputs. The purpose of such a workflow would be to reduce manual work on a repetitive process I do daily. I have searched high and low but haven't been able to find a way to have shortcuts app type on my behalf. Is this possible? Thanks in advance!

You can actually active shortcuts via alfred without having the powerpack: Right click a short cut then click "Add to dock" then you can just active that shortcut by searching for it regularly because it treats it like an app now. You can remove it from the dock and it will still work. In Users>yourname>shortcuts is where it's stored

I don't like using third party services to do things that I can do locally. For getting my network speed, there's a new command line tool called networkQuality on macOS Monterey. It runs a test with Apple services and gives you upload and download speeds. If you open the Terminal and write networkQuality and hit Enter, you'll get the results. It takes a few seconds to complete the test. To incorporate the speed test into a shortcut my recipe is: 1. Run Shell Script 2. Get text from input 3. Quick Look Then, on the first step, the only thing you should write is networkQuality. No spaces, nothing else. Just that word. If you run it from the menu bar as Jeff suggests, the icon will remain white while the test is running and then show you a little window with all the results.

I have an energy Strip which is connected with the Home-App and and is also plugged in on my desktop monitor, my desk lamp and all my chargers. Because everything is on Stand-by I would love to create a shortcut about turning everything off by giving the order to turn off the energy strip. So I can save a bit of electricity. My only condition/my plan is: If my iPhone, iPad and Mac battery level rises above 85 % turn OFF my energystrip The same vice versa: If my iPhone, iPad and Mac battery level rises below 85 % turn ON my energystrip The reason why I chose this condition is because if I wouldn't do that, then I could have some issues on the next morning about not having enough battery for the day. The problem is, it only works when they all interact with each other, across all three devices. can we implement that, at least with the iPhone and iPad or do you have an better idea about a smart energy-switcher? @@JeffSu problem is not how to active 2 split screen of 2 Safari windows, the thing is how to open two different url's on two windows. I have experience that Safari always opened 2 url's on one windows in this case.

I came to this video to find how to run a shortcut at the press of a button. It does not show you that. I am after that when I press the R key, or a combination of keys to run a shortcut

@@raghavansrinivas1379 oh wow. But I guess I’m not surprised Apple has a “dummy proof” way to go about automating tasks haha
Never found shortcuts to be useful, because its not doing anything I just can't do myself manually. And the things I do need automated, are too complicated for the shortcuts. Still looking around for something actually useful, but haven't seen anything yet.

@jackc3205

@@JeffSu Sure. I use my laptop to work in construction. Fast paced. Hectic. What I need automated, are functions within spreadsheets. Multiple data point input / sorting, that sort of thing. When I see the shortcuts being offered its all just superficial (no offence) point and click functions that I need in my job to do now, not at a specified time. Its like voice assistants. Fun to ask about the weather, directions, etc, but thats about it. Literally voice assistant, and shortcuts is saving me 2 clicks of my mouse. Again, no offence. I may be missing something, but to me its just fun, not useful.
