Do like that rumble. Just proper engine sound. No fake bangs, cracks, pops whistles and farts like cars seem to have now through over engineered exhausts to make a sound.

They used a similar Mach 1 (Yellow 1973) in the original 1974 'Gone in 60 Seconds'. 40 minute car chase with the original Eleanor. Check it out.

4:02 is why some of us love American v8's Might be slower than a new 1.0 ecoboost fiesta, but at the lights and gentle pulling away ,one is invisible, the other is a Mustang🇺🇸💪

Remember seeing the original "Gone in 60 seconds" back in the early 80's and i fell in love with Mach 1 Mustang from that moment. Thanks for upload.

It's s Nascar inspired canted valve ( huge 2.19 in h intake valves) Cleveland v8. Legendary engine

The Cleveland is definitely a small block. It is a heavier block than the Windsor, but still considered a small block. Hugely popular in Australia, was built here for about a decade before being phased out in 1982.

Always fun to see how folks in other countries view our 'ol US iron. I have a '70 Mach 1...still on the old original platform before the '71 bulked up, but same basic layout with the big valve Cleveland. The Cleveland was a large small block, physically bigger than the Windsor but a canted valve head and powered many remarkable cars like the Boss 351 and the Pantera, as well as some various hybrid Euro stuff, even Iso for chrissakes. It was an engine to be reckoned with and responds well to tuning...mine puts out 465hp. Remember what y'all were driving, relatively equal in price, back in early 70's UK? Prob the Mustang doesn't seem so bad then. Judge it for its time, it was good stuff. Also, it was built for American roads, which everything west of the east coast are endless straight multi-lane hiways or long 2 lane roads in-between rural towns, so this was exactly what was needed. And dammit it still looks good.

Brings back memories..I once had a '71 Fastback, with original lime green paint, and all chrome bumpers...a fun car.James is correct, it was very, very hard to see out of the back, could be quite dangerous in fact!

I still have mine

growing up on a council estate in the 70s i remember our neighbour had a mach1 squeezed into his tiny concrete garage. And thats where it stayed for most of the time because he was always working on it. This was a time when most owners were driving ford capris and cortinas and escorts and morris marinas so to say it stood out would be an understatement. Kids liked it but to me it looked out of place in essex.

These cars never picked up in value the way many of the other american models in the same category did, but in my opinion they dont have any less appeal because of it. I think they're undervalued, underappreciated and overlooked. Also, from what I've read and heard, the '71 Boss 351 was the fastest production mustang up to that point. These cars can move. Edit: thanks for this review, Jay Emm. As the owner of a '73, I couldn't click fast enough!

One 1971 mach one just sold for 186,000 dollars at Barrett Jackson auctions.

The 351 is 5.8 litres not 6.4

Had one of these in High School in the 80’s. Not a terribly good car but fond memories of doing 360’s in four way intersections and listening to Genesis on the 8 track

Brings back memories of the early 1980's at the Chelsea Cruise- you used to see a few of these plus other American muscle. Happy days.

JayEmm, the best example to road test the Mustang for both performance and handling is the small block Boss 302 from 1969-70. It was created for Trans Am racing in the late 60's. 302/290 hp. (reported) and high rpm only in 4 spd. The 1971 you tested is not the best example. The Boss 429 was a pure drag strip beast only bested by the 426 Hemi cars of Plymouth and Dodge and the 427 Corvettes and LS 6 (454) SS Chevelles of 1967-1970.

Brilliant video, thanks for this, fabulous sound and a real classic American car, look forward to more on this car and others I am sure. I am informed that these car are very easy to maintain, even the later ones as I was tempted with an almost new Mustang a few years ago and looked into the do's and don'ts of ownership and there were no frights!

I specialise in these era Mustangs (1967-68 and 71 -72) -- Gale Halderman and his team came up with one of the most exciting Muscle cars ever made. If the brake booster, vacuum hoses and master cylinder is 50 years old(£900) get all new in there ... then change from American tyres to European- anticipated surface temps, therefore compounds are somewhat different. That'll get your grip back... . 3x point seat belt bolt points are hidden above the headlining ... you just need to feel them out - 3 point belt kit is £200 . Lap straps feel unsafe to me. I'm glad you did this ... they are a lot of fun.

For me I always liked the "land yachts" of this era, just look at the Imperial Le Baron 4 door hardtop from the late 60's. That 351 engine found it's way into European Granada's via Perana in in S. Africa, there are a handful in the UK(hint hint!)

1960s American cars are just so beautiful, long and sleek and with not too over the top wings at rear, fabulous looking but possibly a little underpowered I am told. Like walking into a room when getting in one apparently! Fabulous.

I owned one on these back in 1980 - 85. Loved it ! I was 20 at the time It had headers, 4 brl, posi traction and a 4 speed hurst shifter 351c , the heads in the Cleveland were better than the W .It would top out at 125 mph Functional ram air too which sounded great when you opened it up! Mine had the stripes down the side, perhaps this one is missing? Anyway you got to know the car and we’re able to work with the handling or lack there of. Never had to really do a 3 point turn, just rev it pop the clutch as you turn and bingo spin into the other direction . :). The salt here in Canada hurt the body. And I admit my drivers license also too a beating ;) Anyway. Great video , love the car! Ps I currently own a candy apple red 2010 convertible , yup I’m a mustang guy :)

Had a 351 Cleveland 4v in my '70 Mercury Cougar [ also based in the Mustang] and yes it's considered a small block Ford.

Loved the grin and whistling when your trying to pull away and the wheels are spinning 😂 Liked the styling of these when I was a kid. Bit big for UK roads maybe, but still a great noise and a lot of fun by the looks. A great, well cared for example, too. Totally agree re classic car prices. Many seem absolutely mad at the moment. A bubble that’ll burst perhaps?

P S. That steering wheel is not stock from the factory. Not even close.

Hi Jay, for a short period in my life I owned and enjoyed one of these !! Mine was black with a cream roof, straight exhausts to 'Cherry Bombs' and sounded just awesome. What it would be worth now I have no idea but I bet it would be more than I sold it for !! Re today's UK prices for a 1971 Mach 1 £30,000 might sound OK, but check out the prices for a mid 1960's car - significantly more !!!

Basically an XA Fairmont Coupe out here in the antipodes. (NZ/Aust)

If the car is too much for you, maybe you should stick to driving a 4 banger with traction control and anti lock brakes. Picking on windshield wipers that need replacing and brakes that obviously need servicing is a bit silly. Maybe your next classic car should be a Yugo.

I bought one back in the mid 80,s. and discovered it wasnt a mach 1 but a Super cobra jet. Even so it really wasnt very fast

My buddy has a 71 mach 1 I never herd of a mack 1, but it looks just like his. you really couldn't see out of the back window but was a fun car to ride around in on the weekends

The ultimate gen2 Mustang is the Boss 351. But for a combination of looks and handling a gen1 1970 Boss 302 would be my pick(1969 didn't have a rear sway bar and when they did in 1970 a larger diameter front sway bar was fitted).

The M code Cleveland was everymans version of the 4V 351, rated at 300 hp gross in 1970, derated to 285 hp gross in 1971, and then replaced with a further derated 280 hp gross Cobra Jet layer in 71. It was a hydraulic lifter pizza base rated from 248 hp gross to 330 hp net in the 71-73 Pantera. America only sold a million Cleveland emgines from 70-74, so it was a well thought of engine, but not really very popular. A 138 hp Capri 3000 GXL whips its butt, and is twice the car dynamically, practically and economically...until you look at getting a replacement. For me, the US options offer considerable extra performance for little extra dosh...a Boss 351 or Shelby Europa GT350 for 71 is considerably quicker and it shamed the 365 hp gross big block 429 Mustang for that year. The Boss 351 has a manual gearbox, has early De Tomaso style gearing, and almost matches an Aston Martin Vantage and Ferrari Daytonas acceleration, without the fragility of any of those exotic of the era. The Boss missed out on a great carb and tubing headers, and a proper cruising 3:1 axle ratio like an automatic Aston V8 , there is considerable extra performance hiding in one of those if you can find one of the 1800 made. If you use the three Day 2 factory Ford parts that made it a 400 hp net engine...the Holley 780 cfm 4bbl carb, the HM headers used in the Falcon RP083, and the later Cam Dynamics Ford Special Vehicles Phase III Solid lifter cam with 522 lift, and 242 degrees duration at 50. With proper Aston style 255/60 15 tyres, thats an easy 13.5 second quarter mile car with a proper 161 mph top speed on the 6150 rpm rev limiter.

Really looking forward to this series of American cars to watch you're one of the heroes of lockdown, love that v8 burble and look at these cars as you said though even at least prices and not that easy to drive around the UK roads Plus the new fuels are gonna cause all sorts of issues I think with these Old engines, and that's a shame because I should be enjoyed most likely are all going to have to be converted to electric one day.👍😂😪

I used to own a fully factory original 87 Camaro IROC-Z 5.7 Tuned Port Injection. Barely made 240bhp but would spin the tyres at every oppertunity with minimal effort. To the point it was embarrassing pulling away with the rear wheels on fire, meanwhile some 1.1 Fiesta takes you off the line. Sold it after 5yrs as i was fed up with the car trying to kill me every winter.

Looking at wikipedia, they were clearly 1971 Mustangs. The movie cars were highly customized, but meant to resemble a 1973 Mach 1 offered by Ford at the time.

Was going to say the GT500 was the remake. But as the poster referred to the original Eleanor then assume meaning the 1974 film, and as others have stated they used 1971 cars made to look a little later so looked somewhat like a Mach 1 but wasn’t a real one.

Also reference the Chevrolet COPO production order code used by many dealers in America for placing 427/435 hp. or the true beast ZL1 all aluminum 427 c.i. (500+ hp.) in Corvettes, Camaros, Chevelles and Nova's by dealers such as Yenko in Pennsylvania Nickey in Chicago. The gold standards for performance cars before 1971.

as if your there. thats round the corner from me lol black horse lane is a cool little road. i advise the b1257 and the a170 through Pickering if you want good roads. the corner you did at 9:45 was were the local asda driver tried to take his van round at about 50 mph with no local road knowledge.... went well....... and thats my farm you see in the background lol we dragged him out with the hay fork.......

Nothing surprising about the handling, visibility or braking... But the price! Honestly, that was a surprise! Great value!

5.8L(4 inch bore and 3.5 inch stroke equals 352 cubic inches, the FE big block with same bore and stroke was named the 352 by Ford for trucks and the small block 352(named 351) was for passenger cars).

Just remembered now from the exuberant pull away, many moons ago visiting Classics on the Common in Harpenden a couple of times. People lining the grass verges come home time and the police turning a blind eye to the muscle cars pulling similar starts as they went down the road. Don’t know if that is still allowed. Not been for years since moving away.

AhEmGee Gotta add the Boss 302 to that list, one of the few Mustangs that could actually handle well. The Mach 1 was a land yacht went can to handling.

£30k, fine, but there are very few American muscle car mechanics in the UK. You will easily spend another £30k in a short lifetime keeping it going. From experience (owner of 68 Fastback), whatever price you pay, double it as that’s what you’ll ultimately be paying.

Pity you tried a tired or badly tuned one... a healthy 4v 71 cleveland is really something else. Same goes to brakes, tires & suspension that I see here. Nothing like mine anyway which I enjoy quite a lot on small roads. It's true that in bad weather, you better need to know how to drive and not just expect some computer to correct your trajectory.. (read: remove the fun) but guess what, after 35 years driving it, I can tell you don't even remark it anymore ;) Oh and for the record, the 7173 body was made larger because of the 429 that needed fit in there with better suspension geom than previous years. Not just to be bigger because they could! Unfortunately this engine due to oil crisis and other insurance ended up be a 71 only option. Thx for the nice video.

If you have to have one of these it's the 429 Cobra Jet that'll stick you to the back of you seat. And get it in Grabber Blue or that crazy ass yellow so they can hear you and SEE you coming...cos JM kidded you not bout their brakes.!

No one really thinks the definitive Mustang was the 71-73. Definitive Mustang is IMO 69 Sportsroof Mach 1

If you think that car is big you should compare to the new ones of today. It is not big just looks that way due to long hood. BTW Mach 1 was not a performance package it was appearance only. You had to add options to get performance. Std. engine in Mach 1 was 302 with 2-V nothing hot there. I have 8 of these so I know them.

there is a huge 3rd party marked for parts for US cars- which is a big plus- BUT in Germany for example a lot of these (mostly Chinese) parts can get you in trouble- especially with brakes and tires

Never leave the car running whilst you have the engine lid open. There is no fan cover on most 65-70 Mustangs and as the fan is sharp metal blades, many many people have had their hands chopped off. You will often see dried blood in Mustang engine bays and caked on human flesh.

Lovely sound, would love to have a RHD version of this car, or any American muscle / pony car. Always fancied myself in a '79 Firebird or a '69 Impala actually.

Wow! I'm surprised this very car is still for sale as I was seriously considering it a few months ago (it's quite local to me). In the end I bought another muscle car that more suited my budget. It's also RHD being from Australia 😉

I'd much prefer a Holden/Vauxhall VXR8. A modern V8 muscle car with decent handling, brakes and performance (plus far better suited to roads with corners!) Holden's are great cars.

These cars get about 7 to 10 miles to the gallon. Going from Bristol to London in my 68 Fastback you could literally see the petrol gauge constantly moving down. A round trip was well over £200.

Pretty much one of the last proper muscle cars...... especially since the emissions and safety laws altered the looks and performance. Just as an example; by the late 70's/early 80's it wasn't unusual for a 5.7 litre V8 🇺🇲 to have a minuscule 197bhp! Big smiles here. Great review 👍

As a kid here in the US state of Massachusetts there was a gold and brown-ish one of these around. This was in the early 90's and at the time it wasn't anything special beyond being an old boat. Which, in this part of the country we have a lot of colonial era roads and Murican boats, even when they were new were less popular here than elsewhere as a result. That car was so silly huge that as a kid with a car interest I never really considered it a Mustang. It was that ugly "Mach-1." Not a Mustang.

No, not the ultimate Mustang. In North America, this era of Mustangs is considered when Mustangs jumped the shark. They abandoned pony car roots of being compact, sporty cars to being fat and bloated. The only thing that might make this generation look half-decent is that they were followed by the Pinto-based Mustang II. I'm sure it appeals to UK stereotype of what an American car is, but these are considered a bit naff over here. Edit: Oh, and 351 cubic inches is 5.7 litres, so you're way off. Little research, buddy?

The Cleveland motor also had to do with the head design and was the most desired. It came before the Windsor. By 1971, the end of the muscle car era was clearly close at hand. The golden years fir all American muscle cars was 1965 to 1970 starting with the Pontiac GTO and its hi po 389 with triple 2 bbl carbs and ending with the Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6 with a rated 450 hp (wink wink, right!). Best years for the Mustang were 1969-1970 with the Mach 1, Boss 302 and the Boss 429.

always had a soft spot for this model of the S1 Mustang, the least loved of the S1, still might try to acquire one before they become popular.

BTW, it's an American muscle car so it is a Mach 1 as in block (sounding)...Moch 1 my friend.

Since the Mustang II doesn't count as a Mustang, this is my least favorite body style. The 69 Mustang is my favorite.

The car that has scared me most, was a -67 Mustang Cabriolet, with at least 400 hp and original handling.

The most scary thing in a car was with a Chevy G20 Van winter time. I was going up a very steep hill and into a road. There was someone going out, so I had to stop to wait for them. Stood on the brakes, put on the handbrake, put the car in the park. Suddenly I began to slip backwards. Fortunately, it was a large birch that stopped me and the car from the complete disaster.

where did you go to school? 351 cubic inches is 5.8 litres. they had options of big blocks in other packages. the windsor was only used in the 289 version of the GT40 and cobra and wasnt used in the mustang in the mach 1 and didnt come back to the mustang till the mustang II because the fuel crisis was over.

351 Windsor was the standard engine in the '69 Mach I and all '69 Cougars. Do not state "facts" until you do your homework.
