Tony Northrup teaches you how to use waypoints with DJI drones and the DJI Fly app (though this can also be done with the Lichi app). This isn't just how to setup waypoints in the software, which is pretty easy. This free drone tutorial shows you how to record video or stills so you can transition from day to night or season to season! Create a video that smoothly shows a building before and after construction!
Here's why it's harder than it seems: waypoints are just not very precise. Each time you play back a series of waypoints, the alignment is a little bit off. Sometimes the drone can be 10 or 20 feet higher or lower than when you recorded the waypoints. Sometimes the camera angle is completely off.
Fortunately, we can re-align them in our video editor by using keyframes and distortions. With just a few minutes of editing, you can perfectly align video clips taken at different times of day to create a single, smoothly transitioning video clip.
Tony shows you how to do this with Final Cut, but the process works the same way with any video editor, including Adobe Premiere Pro.

    I've been droning for 5 years and this is the first thing I tried when I upgraded to the Mavic3 Classic. I hope they incorporate an import capability from Google Earth to set waypoints like Litchi does. Tony, thanks so much for doing all of these training videos. I used your part 107 tutorial to pass my FAA test in the Spring of 2018. I am hoping the editing software keeps improving, so it can align all of this through AI.

    I have been trying to do some Hyperlapse Videos Using the Waypoints feature.. With mixed results.. Several times the flight paths have not matched up.. Here is what I have learned.. Take off from the same exact spot.. So the Elevation of the drone is the same each time you launch.. Also the version of GPS used by our drones is not the Full blown military version.. More of a consumer version.. So it is not dead on accurate.. I believe it is within 3 meters?? Which is not a good amount when You are trying to match flights.. Also DJI has told me that changes in Barometric Pressure also effect the repeatability of the flights.. Not sure why that is.. But that's what they have told me.. About 50 percent of the time I have been able to match up the shots in After Effects.. But sometimes it is off by to much and you are out of luck with repeatability..

    I could be wrong but I believe barometric pressure factors into the altitude calculation at elevations beyond the capability of the bottom sensor. I used to have a hiking watch that used barometric pressure to forecast weather, and one of things you had to do is update your elevation with known values (based on a map for instance). This is because if it picks up low barometric pressure, it can mean either you’ve increased elevation or storm system is moving in. Anyways not entirely sure if this applies to drones but if you’re like me youd find this interesting nonetheless.

    Barometric pressure is used on altimeters in regular aircraft. I'm really intrigued that DJI reckons that barometric pressure is a factor because there is no pitot tube on the drone. I thought altitude for the drone was GPS-based and therefore calculated based on azimuth.

  • @ChrisKendrick

    @ChrisKendrick

    Prosumer drones rely on barometric pressure for altitude i.e. barometric altimeter, so weather will impact the height on any given day. Once you get into enterprise mapping level drones such as a M300 RTK, which has LIDAR, and then add in a DEM (digital elevation model) can you get a reliable mission with altitude. I've flown over 100K acres, agriculture missions. Even with those missions, on each battery change, you had to recalibrate the drone for height, and it needs the DEM in order to accurately fly the mission at the desired height. Once calibrated, it then uses DEM to adjust altitude. Altitude is not a GPS coordinate value. So yes, it will help a lot to launch from the same point if possible, but still be aware that your waypoint mission can, and likely will vary.

  • @TonyAndChelsea

    @TonyAndChelsea

    Hmm this is a good point. I'm not sure whether waypoints use the relative altitude but they definitely should use absolute altitude! I usually launch from the same spot, but sometimes I'll launch from the top of a vehicle or something else if there's snow on the ground. That 4 feet or so could make a difference.

    I'm wondering if it would be worth it to invest in Mavic 3 Enterprise if you would do this a lot. You can attach RTK-module to it which provides centimeter accuracy to the drone(when using separate GNSS base station and/or network correction service). It could eliminate the need of doing multiple fights and time consuming post processing.

    @@TonyAndChelsea You should be able to. I don't know the USA specific market/regulation but at least here in Europe you can just simply buy them as private customer(even though the product aimed at enterprises).
