Description:
32 seconds faster than the previous record.
I guess I am doing all these episode maxes afterall. Not too many improvements to the route here, you get berserk immediately at the start of several levels so there isn't much to think about.
In general punching is best against high health enemies, especially if they are infighting, but you don't want to waste rockets or cells on lower tier enemies either.
I can't really recall what good times on each map are, so the :) :| :( above aren't that accurate. Overall the time could have been better, but there's so much luck with infighting and damage taken while punching that this is not fun to do.
E2M1: Just need to be careful to pick up enough shells for the exit. A decent second half of the map, start could have been better.
E2M2: Lots of punching. Sometimes monsters go wandering off here, the imp after the chaingun secret could have gone around the corner and gotten stuck, but luckily I checked. Did have one monster that wasn't accounted for, but he showed up at the plasma rifle, no issues otherwise.
E2M3: Slower to go into the mega armor room first to clear out the monsters, but I don't want them wandering off. If I have the health for it I'll go into the corner by the barrels/baron to get some better damage at the cost of some health, if I'm lucky the baron can take a lot of damage from it.
E2M4: I use a rocket boost to grab 5 rockets through the wall, it's not necessary, but because you punch things it would actually be inconsistent otherwise. I then immediately do a linedef skip to skip the 5 lost soul closet where the rockets are located. This run can be very annoying because of nonsense like the cacodemon afterwards, often they do nothing, but sometimes they just land 60 damage bites and there's never a good time to take those. That was followed up with a 4 damage pinky demon bite, so not that unlucky afterall... especially nothing close to unlucky after what happens next, the most ridiculous infighting luck I've ever seen with the barons/cacos/imps, never in practice did it go that perfectly, unreal.
E2M5: There's no way I'd follow up the luck I just had with the second pair of cacos and barons I need to punch right? Well the exact same thing happened again, unreal luck and the best infighting I've ever seen and I'm done with this fight 5+ seconds faster than what I consider a good time. I also had a bit of armor left which is nice. I changed up the route a little bit just before this attempt by going to the zombieguy closet on the way back instead, it makes things a lot easier at the cost of a little bit of time, would have been less if I was better prepared for it.
E2M9: A really bad time, I should have started firing at the barons when I went back into the starting room as they were gathered up nicely, but the plan was to conserve as much ammo as possible so I wanted them mixed in with the cacodemons too. While I lose a lot of time to the previous record it's partially because of less cell use, which pays off on the next levels, but with this strategy it's possible to go under 55 seconds.
E2M6: More awful luck with the incoming damage while punching, cost me quite a bit of time because I had to slow down, should have died to the baron in the closet too, didn't expect the pinky to survive and block me. Could probably do a lot better with the ammo management on this level. The ending can be a bit random, but usually it's not too difficult to get some decent rocket splash, also fortunate to not have any demons wander into the starting room which can happen sometimes if they wake up which they didn't this time.
E2M7: I'll use any cells I have left on the pinkies at the start, I try to leave 40 cells before the invulnerability so that I'll have 200 for the cyberdemon. However I ended up a bit short this time.
E2M8: Have to get up close to make sure those cells hit as running out will cost me several seconds, which I did, but he was low enough that it didn't matter much.

    Hand damage with berserk can deal massive damage output, sometimes even higher than the average of a rocket, plus hitting your fist is faster than shooting rockets

    It's mostly used in UV-Max runs, since it makes killing demons very fast. Runs that don't require 100% kills mostly just use it as a health pack.

    I love how the only enemy in Doom 1 you can punch without the risk of them attacking you and instantly damaging you in an unavoidable way is the cyberdemon, even though they have the most catastrophic damage output if you do mess up. In Doom 1 you don't have pain elementals, which you can bezerk punch without retaliation because they need room to spawn lost souls, so you have fewer enemies that you can't mitigate the risk of taking damage from whilst punching, and there's no super shotgun, so bezerk punching is also way more necessary for fast UV Max speedruns because without the super shotgun, the bezerk fist is the highest DPS weapon apart from the rocket launcher, and rocket ammo is scarcer than shells, it is only situationally useful because in close quarters it will blow you up, and the plasma rifle and BFG, which have even scarcer ammo and they are completely unavailable in episode 1, and when they do become available in the other episodes, the baron becomes a regular enemy that end up becoming plasma sponges that soak up all your plasma ammo because they have loads of health and you gotta prioritise your plasma to kill them because they have loads of health and they'll otherwise take forever to kill which is undesirable in a UV Max speedrun if you're trying to do well. The risk of getting attacked and damaged in an unavoidable way whilst trying to be aggressive in order to be fast must be a nightmare when UV Maxing Doom 1 because if RNG goes against you, you have to slow down to avoid dying, and there's nothing you can do about it. Especially because stunning the enemy with your bezerk punches is always less than 100% guaranteed no matter which enemy it is, there's always a chance your bezerk punch doesn't stun them and then they can attack you and you're point blank so you will get hit instantly and be unable to dodge in order to avoid damage. RNG must be a nightmare when going for fast UV Max speedruns of Doom 1...

The original paper manuals state the item lasts the whole level, which in practice is more accurate but this is also technically incorrect. Rather, the game's code defines the Berserk state to have an exceedingly long timer that in practice no one will ever exceed at somewhere around 4.3 billion "tics" which translates to nearly 4 years of in-game time."

    They did use to count towards kills in earlier versions of Doom 1, but it was changed at the same time as the Pain Elemental was introduced with Doom 2. Probably because they share the same source code.

    The guys at iD were huge DnD players, and they wanted to have damage calculations very much like DnD. Hence the way damage is calculated. For example: Baron's damage is always multiples of 8, so the "dice roll" is a D10 multiplied by 8. Instead of "random damage ranging from 8 to 80". Hitscan enemies always deal damage in multiples of 3, so their bullet is a D5 multiplied by 3. So on and so forth. Bright idea? Maybe, maybe not. Randomness is a polarising feature, but you have to admit that not knowing if that Baron is gonna deal 80% or not will keep you on your toes, which adds some variety and refreshment to something you might speedrun thousands upon thousands of times. The average damage of a berserk punch won't kill a pinky, but without the magic of randomness, you wouldn't get the dopamine hit from one-shotting them, which is what leaves a bigger impression than the three-shots.     @@chaelcanterbury8787 It makes it more believable that you actually shoot organic targets. We have no bodypart hitzones in this game, so with static damage it would be always the same. Always 3 Shotgun Shots this enemy, always 2 shots this other enemy every single time. That might be good for Multiplayer, but for single player it would be pretty boring.

    @@zebug4762 This is a good decision too going for multiplier random. This way its random, but not all over the place random and thus less random in the sense of differences, because you can only have these 3 or 8 numbers instead of a tons of numbers. That increases variety because with a range with many numbers you would end up on an average in the middle far more often and the maximum value and minimum value would be rare.
