    Heads up, unsoliticited production feedback from a fellow YT hack: great look, great setup, and not-so-great framing. Having your eyes at 50% frame height is an uncomfortable way to look at you, feels like you sank into the floor, and your gestures drop out of frame before they communicate the energy. I want your face higher in the frame, can't go wrong with the eyes 1/3 down.

    I enjoyed your video as well as learned some things. I've watched Caleb's videos with envy. I'm working on a "portable" setup using a desktop light stand with a short light boom arm for my DIY lightbox, a friction arm for my camera, and a grip head swivel to hold a desktop arm for my mic. I hope to get it assembled next week when everything arrives. My goal is to be able to take it to different places for recording without having to assemble and disassemble everything. If it works well, I'll probably get the rolling stand like Caleb and others have.

    I was thinking of making a shelf on the wall just above the table top. Where you then mount everything on instead of at the table. That way you eliminate the problem of bumping into the table. This will work if you are very limited for space and already have your desk against the wall. It will also be easier to make changes without the need to move the desk to be able to access the clamps. You can even do this with the shelf higher on the wall and then just mount the Elgato system hanging from the shelf.

  • @chrisguess

    @chrisguess

    That is a great idea, I have seen this done for overhead rigs too. It wouldn't really work with my current set up but I have had wall mounted rigs in the past and its so much better than a load of tripods.

  • @zynthio

    This is exactly what my setup has been for years. My 3 monitor arms, mic arm, camera arm, and lights are all mounted to a shelf that is attached to the wall about 8 inches above my desk. Keeps my desk totally clean aside from keyboard and mouse and I can bang on my desk all i want to and nothing on the shelf is going to move at all.

Do you think the Elgato Arms can support the Aputure light(s) if I buy a second one for the lights? Need to use the Flex Arm towards the rear to make space for the Light Dome Diffuser. Not Planning on a Single-Arm but planning to clamping all my gear in a Single Desk instead for portability.

  • @chrisguess

    @chrisguess

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes regularly, in fact almost all of my overhead shots are with the GH5. It handles it ok depending on how far out the horizontal arm is. If you set it up correctly it can only droop so far, so won’t be at dead 90 degrees but close to it. Of course you are prone to some wobble if you nudge the table to which it is attached.

    That arm you mounted the camera to, how much does the ball head, camera and lens weight? And how does the arm and extension you added hold that if you point it straight down instead of like you had it at the end? My camera and lens is just under 1200 grams, so I'm curious how sturdy it will be and if it can hold it at all without eventually give in.

  • @chrisguess

    @chrisguess

    2 жыл бұрын

    Roughly off the top of my head around 1kg. To use it as an overhead rig you would need to place the additional ballhead pointing upward at a right angle to the arm then you can point the quick release mount down to mount the camera. This is why I add the Joby ballhead in the first place. If you were to try and use just the ballhead at the end of the arm then the camera would droop. In my setup this ballhead stays horizontal but I make sure that the ballhead can only move left and right and not up and down by rotating it at the end. All this to say that I would think that the arm would just about support your setup but probably not much more. I hope that all makes sense, it’s really difficult to describe, it should make sense if you look back at the video.

I really like how you used the flex arm to get more distance between you and the camera; you look very good, without distortion. Meanwhile, most youtubers have their face looking like a pear because they have their camera at arm's length, which causes crazy distortion. But still, your frame is too tight for my taste, and you are also too low on the frame. A wider shot with would look less intimidating to the viewer. And the intro&outro music is crazy loud relative to your voice; it blew out my eardrums.
