YES... I AGREE.. I LIKE HOW RELAXED HE IS AND HIS SIMPLE APROACH TO COMPLEX THINGS... I WANT TO STUDY HIS COLOR WHEEL BEFORE I MOVE FORWARD... YES, I'M NEW
Using your limited palette taught me so much. It makes painting such a pleasure. I love the color mixing process. Now that I've used this method for a few years, it takes me much less time to get the color right. I also know instinctively when I do need a touch of veridian or magenta. I am so glad I discovered your site.
Your color mixing tutorials have been invaluable in my development the past three years. Thank you very much for them.
One of the most influential painters on KZread, so much people learning from his great videos, thanks!
Omg thanks Mark. Im at the point where ive been drawing really well but was intimidated by color. Just practicing mixing colors I instantly got a match for the exact flesh tones I was looking for.
I just subscribed Your channel last weekend because I try to do portraits and always struggle with color, value etc... I never thought it would be so difficult ! I wanna thank You for sharing these advice with us , it's really helpful. I think this video is so important and well explained, thank You so much Mark and greetings from Finland.
Thank you once again, for sharing your knowledge with us now looking at mixing colors archiving better results. You are a very kind teacher in helping so many to understand the concept better.
Just started oil painting and these videos are gold. Simple and to the point
Dear sir, you are a genius! I watched your limited color palette and 'how to mix any color' videos and it changed my art life. Thank you so much!

You are simply wonderful. Great tutorial. Many thanks for your excellent guidance! I am very very happy I discovered your site. Now I'm going to experiment with pre-mixing the colors and following your tutorial.

in awe of your talent and genius.
Thank you for the update to the previous color wheel.
Very interesting! Great ideas for mixing colours! Learned a lot! Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful instruction, love it. Thanks
Thank you for a very informative video on the subject of color palette and mixing. I'm a beginner when it comes to oilpainting. I'm learning, sometimes struggling and just want to learn more. At the moment I try to mix a rather intense bright blue... hmm. Getting there eventually. I'm glad to have found your website and have become a subscriber.
Good job. Very clear no hype approach....much appreciated
Hey Mark, thank you for your videos! It's awesome that you're putting in the time and effort to share your knowledge! I have a question regarding your slow drying medium; I live in Israel and I couldn't find the Venice turpentine anywhere, and shipping it here is quite expensive. Is there any different substance that i can add instead? Thanks again!
Superb explanation of how to mix colours. Thank You.
Thanks so much for this. I will definitely print and laminate one of these.
Thanks Mark. Classy, as always.
You are amazing Very helpful Thank you Sir
Thank you chief this is an eye-opener
Thanks for all these information , your site is one the best I have watch👌🙏🌎
BRILLIANT!!! thankyou SO much. game changer.
The addition of burnt umber .Still cant get over how brilliant that is.
That you for your excellent instruction. Do these rules apply to all paints or more specifically to your line of Geneva paints?
i found this very helpful! tyvm!! keep up the good work!
Thank you Marc!
Master teacher ❤glad i found these videos
Thanks for a very informative video. Can I use your mixing theory gouache paints? Thanks!
Thankful for the knowledge
A valuable video. Thanks.
Thank you for everything
Is there any way I can see a full resolution picture of that painting behind you with the two eggs and the yellow cup??? I'd love to do a study of it!
great tips master!
Awesome! Thank you!
I was reading an article on mixing Colors. Tell me if I am wrong, they said that dark Colors should be apply thinner on the canvas because it is easier to put the lighter color in it. Could you please explain more about this concept.
can you tell how can I improve the brushwork to land on the right place and with that create right message?
Always Helpful 🙂
Thank you!
Thank you for the amazing content! I have a question: Where can I find the list of pigments used on the geneva paints? I tried finding it on the geneva website but I failed =/ Thanks!
Where would you place an Ivory black on this color wheel? I'm assuming next to the Blue
Can you make a video about how to create the illusion of hair...
thank you so much from philipines
Thank you.
Your beard is becoming more epic!great video as usual.
Thanks!
Thanks mang!!
Great video, and it might even fit for digital painting as well... :)
Thanks a lot Mr. Carder! Your videos help me to improve my skills. I have two questions. Unlike you, I prefer to mix most of the colors during the painting process. For example there are only a few colors prepared on my palette for painting an ordinary pear, like dark mantis green or moss green. Then I mix two of them to get necessary mid-color if it is needed. And sometimes, I add other color to the canvas directly and just blend colors a little bit. My first question is: Do I have to prepare all of my hues and tones before I get started? Does that method contribute to realistic view of my painting? Secondly, as you said, you use your own brand’s oil paints at the moment. Which essential Winsor & Newton colors you were using before you found Geneva Fine Arts Company? More in particular which red?

Your a legend mate.you know your shit. Amazing work!!
That’s interesting because the colour wheel that I use is a little bit different doesn’t use brown but instead actually has a pre-mixed bright purple. And the red blue and yellow i use are very bright.
Really nice demonstration! Thanks. Btw, What is burnt?
Thank you! Do these colors and color mixing rules work with water color paints also?
I'm currently learning and using Acrylics for the short term as I don't have a place to use oils with airflow. Could anyone point me to Winsor & Newton equivalent colours? I'm guessing titanium white, ultra marine and burnt umber will be the same but which red and yellow should I use? Cadmium Red looks much brighter than this red but could be the screen. Also cadmium yellow comes in a few hues. Much appreciated
Thank you! I have two questions: First: how do you get transparent colors through a limited palette? Second: How should I be making my paintings so they get a glossy finish? Sometimes, some parts of my paintings (of certain colors) end with a very opaque finish, which doesn’t look good when a light is placed close to the canvas. Thanks again for all your great content and teaching spirit

1st. In terms of color transparency... I usually use, for initial sketches, color + terebenthine (to thin them) and for glazeing add a little more linseed oil to your colors until they became transparent as you want. 2nd. Some colors are thicker than others and have less oil in them or the pigment is very dry from his nature and absorb more oil. The easiest thing to do after your painting dryed completely (usually between 3-4 weeks or maybe more, drying depends on many factors) varnish with a thin layer of linseed oil. Also you can find special oils or gels for varnishing (online or at local art shops). =^.^=
very useful, thanks:)
Merci 😊
You mention possibly needing a green to add. Which green would you reach for first ?
Hi Mark. Great video as always. Have you seen/read the book entitled 'Blue and Yellow do not make Green'? If not it's really useful in explaining that in order to make secondary colours that lean towards cool and warm, an artist's palette should contain a warm AND a cool red, a warm AND a cool blue and a warm AND a cool yellow. Have you adopted that approach before? It has worked for me in the passed with great success and is still classed as a limited palette. Cheers
Does someone know if I can use his medium like a normal medium, not premixing it in my paint. Will it mess with my titanium white
I appreciate all the videos I've watched so far. However, I have a question: I saw that you've changed your yellow to bismuth yellow instead of cadmium yellow because you said the cad yellow was towards the green, or something like that. Con you elaborate on that in another video? Is the bismuth yellow as strong as the cadmium? Thanks.
Excellent, just what a nooby needed
So would this work with watercolour if we replace white with plain water?
Can we do this with. Acrilic
Merci
Could you please do more talking and drawing processes? I really liked the one with emily
Would you be able to match Magenta or Cyan with this palette? Thanks for this Great tutorial!!!! :)

cyan and magenta are too saturated for this colour wheel...see realcolorwheel.com
Ok but here's a question. It's an honest question and not intended to imply that you are contradicting yourself, since I suspect there is a good underlying explanation. So here's my question: on another video you pointed out that white can easily ruin a mixture even in small proportions. That one should make efforts to keep it out of certain color mixtures. But now in this video presentation, you are mixing white in almost all the mixtures. I have to admit I'm a bit confused. Hoping you can clarify this for me. Thanks!
why not use cobalt blue instead of ultramarine?
Where to find new color wheel to print out? Thanks
Follow it and you will accomplish things beyond your wildest dreams. I am talking from experience.
i was wondering how to work with very dark colours not to making it black , how to get to that right intensity, because black usually ruins the colour it gives dirtyness
Thank you for your videos, they are very interesting, informative and helpful. Also, there's something I'd like to know more about which I'd like to propose as a topic for a video. I'd like to know what is the process and technique behind painting details in very loose colors which look correct from a distance, like here imgur.com/BFqhEZi for example. I just don't understand how the artist figures which colors will work. I know you've mentioned something about it in one (or more) of your videos, but I couldn't find a detailed explanation of it. Anyway, keep up the good work, Cheers!
Sir Strongest colours means Primary colours ya high croma or low croma confused 🤔?????
does this apply to all paint like gouache?

I have been to many talks about color mixing and color theory - but this is the one I use and recommend to other. Its just so clear - and it is maybe strange that I take this as my favorite color theory because I do not paint realistic but use color as tone and look at paintings as visual, tactile Music and I also do a lot of mixing during the painting process - and this theory has really given me a nuanced understanding of color - and then another question I use Newton and Winsor art could you say which colors you used before your own because it is so expensive to buy anything from USA because of rules of import - but your lessons are just great nomatter what style you are working with - thank you for sharing www.lisengel.com

Hi Lis, At Mark's site there is a supply list for those outside of the US that lists the essential palette colors ( www.drawmixpaint.com/supplylist/international.html ). I believe the Winsor & Newton Artists' Oil versions of these colors are what he used before (he recommends them in the supply list). And if you watch the "how to thin down oil paint with medium" video (here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nqSJm8ege9iTm7A.html ), the tubes Mark uses there are the same ones on that list I linked. The colors: - permanent alizarin crimson - cadmium yellow pale - french ultramarine - titanium white - burnt umber

Thanks for the link Nick.
I make brown every day.
B
Can someone explain what he means by “color is too gray = color is too blue” and color is too brown = color is too orange?” I’m a beginner and this made me slightly confused.
Hi
Rd
dat beard
YOUR website gives no way to download your color wheel
Don't see the color wheel on your website anymore?
Black has too much much blue ?? Every blacks ? Black isnt a mix right ? Its black pigments or.. ? Never heared or seen blue in black.. Edit: what I mean is that colors doesnt works like temperature, orange is not the absence of blue, yellow doesnt contain blue.. or you can blow my mind by saying that yellow contain more blue than orange.. ?? I learned that the 3 primaries maked brown, in light black is absence of.. light but in paint black isnt obtainable with primarys, in theory we need the 3 primaries AND black and white.. or I miss something and someone can explain me this..
No, cyan, magenta, and yellow is the best color wheel.
Second time I’ve heard him say “foilage.” 🤣😂
