I’d never used Elektron gear before this video, honesty I was super scared and skeptical about getting into it because I’d always heard how complicated it could be. Bo had a really really good idea to have us come and get our hands dirty and honestly I feel super comfortable taking on one for myself someday since I kinda want to buy a Digitakt lol. Hopefully we were good students 👨🏽‍🎓 (PS. Bo’s hair is as glorious in real life haha)

I've been considering buying a Digitakt for a while but had never used or seen one in person. You should get a major kickback from Elektron because I've gone from knowing nothing about how to use this machine to being confident that when it arrives I'll be able to jump right in and make music. Coming from a Volca Sample and seeking similar workflow, your video showed me the parallels and useful differences in a way I could understand pretty quickly. A simple explanation of trigs proved invaluable. Thank you for sharing, as always!

This was exactly what I needed to get going on my digitakt. Early on I missed a button pushes here or there and had to really pay close attention but otherwise perfect and at a good rate to absorb it all.

Hi Bo, this video is very usefull, cause somehow when you start with a new device from scrath, it can be very intimidating, or you may find that you simply give up because you don't know the basic workflow. You know, three years after getting a Digitakt, I still smirk a little when I hear things like “I think it loads into the RAM…here I will click Yes, and try to guess whether it goes to a sound, a track, a particular drive”. The thing is a beautiful, gorgeous piece of amazing hardware…and yet I have about given up trying to make music with it. The ergonomics, the menu driven workflow, the odd behaviours with projects and what I think are saved patterns, etc., etc., have just driven me around the bend. I get that these developers are brilliant, I get that some folks make amazing sounds with their gear (and I have had some real bonding moments with my unfinished creations), but I also get why many look at it, try it out and just realize how much more important it is to simply play, produce and record with stuff that comes, out of the box, as somewhat self evident devices that invite them to play, produce, and hit the shiny red button.

Very nice and very much needed!

Great video! Digitakt is a great. I personally love looping very short single waveforms to basically use it as a synth. Unfortunately it can seem very intimidating.

This is a good method for video tutorials, I like that. I think I'll try this approach on my channel if you don't mind.

Watching these videos a year later seems so surreal, being able to sit at the same table so close to someone else without a mask, I miss this as much as live shows, also a year later I'm about to pull the trigger on a Digitakt which seemed so intimidating a year ago

I’ve had my DT for a few years. It scares me. I’m currently really enjoying Dave Mech’s course. What is so special about this video is that it’s proper client centred learning. Non judgemental, open hearted and as a result we can ALL learn something. Thanks so much. Do you do any paid courses I wonder? I’ll sign up for anything if you are the teacher 😊

This is a super useful video - I managed to follow along with about 95% of it on my Digitone. I never realised how similar the 2 machines were until this point. I don't do much sample-based music but Elektron has made Digitakt an easy decision if I decide to - virtually zero learning curve is a good value proposition!

You’re kidding.... right?

You can assign the LFO to oscillate the filter cutoff. That's like 90% of what I typically use it for.

Excellent tutorial! Very reassuring as well to see your guests making the same mistakes as me in the beginning 😋! The question why some / many find the Electron workflow confusing and difficult might be due to the manuals: There are some passages in the Digitakt manual I still don't understand even after having grasped how to achieve things practically. Examples would go a veeery long way there - without the many tutorials (and I think yours are the best because you are more focused on the workflow than on techy details 👍) I would have sold the box.

Now that we learned the basic functionalities, I would love to know if you have advices on how to create a song and not just various beats per pattern that doesn't necessarily fit together. For example: Where to get the external samples (via Synth or buy sound packs)?, how to link pattens, do you define a start and end track in advance?, do you use muting a lot?, what type of sounds fit together (e.g. snare and clap, ...)

Im lost after watching this. It feels extremely difficult to dive in to this. Im normally working with DAWs and computers but this feels like another level. When I watched tutorials on the Akai MPC it felt way more logical to me.

Same. I’m hoping I get some answers to my question I wrote above because I really don’t get it. Seems like a very unintuitive, unnatural, and not a fun way to make music. There must be a reason for the adoration it gets.

41:53 the moment when both students know they are correct in calling out the teacher’s math, but politely refrain from argument to keep the lesson moving forward. Yeah, so thinking this through, if you think about a single track alone as described at 40:44, alternating between trigs doesn’t double the trig count since you first divided the available trig count by two to setup the alternate. But I think what Bo was actually trying to describe is that when you combine the track containing the alternating trigs with with other tracks playing on both steps, the combined total of unique combinations per step is increased and potentially doubled.

What about the most frustrating element that will surly trip up any new or even old user, HOW & WHERE TO SAVE/LOAD SAMPLES & SOUNDS IN THE +DRIVE OR SOUND POOL. The saving architecture is sooo confusing. Please someone do a vid on this, it is a workflow destroyer!!! Specifically how can I access a sound, sample, or even a kit from a previous project? I would love to use the palette of sounds I've created in new projects, is this possible? Do I have to save sounds/samples it the project and the +drive separately to be used again later?

@@atomikrobot8016 You can sample your tweaked sound internally, creating a new sample that gets saved to the +drive and which you can then load into as many projects as you like. I couldn't be bothered to read the manual but I've watched plenty of tutorials and that trick was in more than one of them. I can't remember if it was in Cuckoo's tutorial, but that video is a great place to start. Bo likes to get ahead of himself, whereas Cuckoo takes it slow and shows some pretty advanced tricks along the way. Highly recommended

@@999117123 Thanks man I totally forgot about that, are you aware of a way to copy factory patterns to personal patterns so you can tweak the balls out of some presets... I wish Octatrack presets were available to install to the DTak. Is the Dtone easier to jam with or the same.? I guess a decent key/beatstep is essential for a Dtone too.? My Elektron journey begins 21yrs after my Atari 1040ste and Cubase crusade commenced, love the absence of pc at worst an akai 40 Ableton controller might sneek its way in one day the equipment is cheaper than it's ever been and the KZread movement is fierce yet passionate and cohesive.. Keep on being you and only you...

Wish helped them a bit more with the function button and the knobs because they were both under the impression that the knobs itself presses in they even said how come u have to press function to press in the knob ! You should have been like nah dude press function and turn the knobs to get secondary functionality from each knob . Turning without function does that displayed on the screen holding function and turning the knobs does secondary. Thanks for the video I learned quite a lot from this

Bo I'm currently facing an issue with my Digitakt!! Mine didn't triplicate overnight the way yours did, what did I do wrong? Do I have to hold function + copy + Power button for turning it off before going to sleep?

I searched all the internet and could find the answer. If i use live recording mode and record parameter changes for example pitch (by turning the knob) Is there a way to only delete automation changes and keep the notes?

Models share alot of similarities, but the Octatrack is quite different.

Hm, digitone and digitakt works really well together but I dont see a clear way to integrate the SP except as FX

I’m really surprised to see all of the comments here that say this was a fantastic tutorial. I do technical writing / curriculum dev for a living, and this video is kind of an ADHD cluster. What would be most helpful for these sorts of videos is a clear set of learning objectives, and a visual outline that can be followed. Perhaps a ‘here’s how to make a song’ format would work, to give applicable info. Watching the first 10 minutes of this has my head spinning, as the host jumps from topic to topic, not following a logical order, but rather indulging whatever distraction or function comes up at the moment. I appreciate the huge effort that went into this, but I just wish that operator experts would spend a little time learning about learning itself.

Hey Vernon. So it could be good to have a bit of backstory: This was filmed at a synth event. Its literally a spur of the moment kind of thing where I grabbed two friends and we tried to make a fun tutorial. There was no pre planning or anything. So you are correct: it is a bit all over the place at times. But the fact that so many feel helped also tells me that its achieving what it sets out to do for alot of people. Something which a more formal structure dont always do. You should also know than I am a licensed teacher and have 10 years experience teaching at university. So yes, I know full well the importance of learning goals. Ive taught at the teachers education even. And I know that knowledge about learning and actually reaching students with your teaching is two very different things. So I wouldnt be so quick to judge something just because it doesnt fit neatly into your little square box of what a tutorial should be.

is the Digitakt a piece of gear to produce a track from beginning to end? or what would be at least necessary to produce hardware only (without a DAW) ?!

You might prefer the MPC Live. Has built in synths, sampling abilities, big pads for finger drumming, easier workflow compared to the Digitakt.

Not exactly sure why Elektron got such a rep as having a complex interface... (was it mainly because of the Octotrack?) Sure, you have to study it a bit, but I wouldn't know my way round many a synth or drumbox.

Is that an Elektron blazer??

Octa = Some. It is in its own advanced league. Rytm = A lot in the sense that they work very similarly.

First M:S, today arrived my DT!

This tutorial is so confusing I just want to learn how to set up sounds for the eight eight voices and then I know how to use the basic sequencer but this is so confusing to even get started to load my sounds and I don't understand

You know, in a lot of ways pooping is a type of filter... or at least it would be what comes from the output port... ah? Ahhh? Ahhhhhhh? 🤷🏽‍♂️

There's absolutely no reason why anybody should be affraid or intimidated by the elektron workflow. There's really not much to it, just parameter locks, trig conditions and probabilities, and it just makes it so much easier to try out interesting things very fast. You can do everything in ableton that you can do in digitakt... but you probably never would, because it would be too much of a hassle. On the digitakt it's a breeze.

So is the allure with this machine that once you break through the extremely difficult task of learning it, you’re thrilled you went the struggle because ??? Please fill in the why, I’m sincerely asking the Digitakt wizards out there. Is there a some Nirvana moment where you realize this newly found way to make music is just superior and you understand why elektron continues to rattle people’s brains with products that have the a very robust learning curve.

i mean it's not gonna be for everyone, but the condtional sequencing and being able to lock different parameters to different trigs and such is obviously prettyp oawful for a hardware box, its a vert fast and intuitive workflow once you have some time to practice it, frankly this sort of thing is more awkward to do in a DAW in my opinion, you could use automation lanes to do this but having to fiddle with curves and stuff is WAY more awkward and honestly less intuitive vs just... holding the trigger where you want the effects to be and dialing them in then and there, it's very immediately and honestly I do think this workflow is intuitive, it's just we're so used to other ways of doing things
