Ultimate Bargain Porsche? Why The E1 Cayenne GTS is a Used Car Hero

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today on the channel, I drive the short-lived but much-loved 2008 Porsche Cayenne GTS. Available only for a couple of years, the model combined a naturally aspirated 405PS 4.8L V8 with revised styling and the option of a MANUAL gearbox to create one of the most compelling petrolhead daily drivers.

I had driven this with manual gearbox back in 2014. I think for whole state of Latvia we had exactly 1 car with manual gearbox, which tells a lot of how rare that option was for the GTS. I loved every bit of it, both on road and offroad, great car, great value retention, great durability.

Loved my Gen 1 Cayenne and often look at the classifieds to man-math another onto my drive. Facelift Gen 1 GTS sounds the best but I’m with you on the Turbo (or Turbo S) - that’s the one that would get my money. Interior upgrades and extra punch for the win. Great video as always James! 😎👊

Love to see you becoming more aware of the goodness of the Cayenne. My first introduction to the Cayenne was literally the introduction, at a launch event at Shea Stadium in Queens, NY. I was able to do their auto cross setup in a turbo and was blown away at how agile it was. And powerful! I had recently done so,egging similar at the X5 launch and the Cayenne was on another level…and the Bimmer was impressive! Many years later, my first Porsche was a Cayenne diesel. 10 years later we still have it. With 120k on the clock it hasn’t been the most reliable thing, warranty has helped. But it’s so beloved that when we went to replace it with a new one….we kept it and sold a newer car instead. I suspect that won’t last long, we’ve no need for two SUV’s but that tells you how much we love it. Porsche has done a masterful job of enfusing its DNA into a nose heavy SUV. Remarkable. Capable and confident, the fun is still in there if you dial up the switches and press on. Loving this series! A GTS manual would be the business.

Nice summary Jay, Turbo got my vote. PDCC is hilarious. I tend to remap everything and I see no point whatsoever in looking for a Turbo S as they map to identical power as the Turbo. 4.8 957 was the sweet spot for me, I do all my own maintenance and love how it gets down the road. If you buy the GTS you’ll always hanker after the Turbo! Welcome to drive mine. 😊

Your video on the first gen pre facelift cayenne convinced me to get one and I convinced myself that the V6 is enough. For me a car in a more reserved spec with smaller wheels and a less screaming and hopefully more reliable engine, at least for the early Cayenne models, made more sense for a daily errands car. I’m very happy with it so far.

A decade ago my son sent me an '04 Cayenne S by rail from Vancouver. Marvellous fun getting to know it and the Porsche network online. According to what I read, I had become a naked (without warranty protection) cliff jumper (owns 1st Gen Cayenne). Repairing the car became my favourite hobby for four years until I bought a used Lexus es300h and grew up. In a time of rising fuel prices, the Cayenne per mile cost 2.7 times as much to drive as the hybrid, and it has ventilated seats. My son stayed with his '04 S for several years, towing a 20X8.5 car trailer with it. Then he reluctantly sold it for a BMW M2, but now he's back to a Cayenne plug-in electric, due to arrive in a week. A 240 watt, 40 amp plug in the garage has become the new family welcome mat.

I had a 2006 Turbo S with 520 bhp, very much a love/hate thing, but I was proud of it. I do want another, but will do my best to wait for a 2011 2nd gen, as the first one spoilt me and a facelift is too similar inside. I got 17-19 mpg out of mine which I was okay with. I have pondered the GTS, but now you've made my mind up for me, in short 'enough', really isn't enough. Turbo, or V8 Turbo diesel is the only way to go.

One thing I did find is that it's much more fun to drive in sport mode so figured out a way to keep it on as default, but to get into nutcase mode, best have it in sport mode and traction control disabled. Makes it a lunatic.

We plan on doing a complete overland off-road build. Hoping to keep this beast forever! We also went with one with no air ride so happy to see others confirm that it was the better choice 👌🏽 We bought a tuning chip as well which will greatly increase the hp & torque.

  • @pabs002

Nice summary with lots of good points made - very much enjoyed it. Another option which might tempt you/others is the facelifted 'S' which has the same 4.8 V8 with only a few HP less. Main difference is the price (picked ours up for 7k) which is a decent chunk for a mostly similar car, especially if someone has been busy with the options boxes - 19k on ours including air suspension, sports exhaust & 21" cayenne sport wheels (+ arch extensions) etc. I was also put off by engine murmurs on the earlier 4.5 and find the facelift more visually appealing so this was a happy compromise as the 'family car'. Issues so far after 18 months / things to watch out for: 1) all 4 headlights & tail light clusters have moisture of some sort in them - will be resealing in the near future. 2) 4-zone climate controls have failed in the back - not that fussed as just use the front controls 3) EML has just appeared faulting knock sensor - will replace at service 4) windscreen washer fluid pump is a bit weak - will replace at service 5) noticed a very slight hesitation once or twice under acceleration so have replaced all 8 coil packs as a precaution Other than that a hell of a lot of car for the money if you can stomach the woeful fuel economy and I genuinely enjoy driving it - just make sure your partner fills it up... EDIT: did I mention it's ULEZ compliant?!

Wholeheartedly agree that the V8 TDI is the better & smarter choice that makes the GTS obsolete. With 850nm of torque & much more important, 50% better fuel economy it’s a no brainer. Though I’ve read a lot of issues on the DPF, but feel this relates to owners who drive short distances, which is not good for any diesel engine.

Even here in UAE, we actually go with that in mind on SUVs (and we have Patrols and Land Cruisers ofcourse). Only thing you can expect is decent range out of the big tank, over 15L/100 km is a regular thing.

The first gen was a beast off road, the second gen was pushed much more for to the road side of the equation, no where as good off road. So it depends on what you want to do, if you want to surprise the locals at your off road trails you need a first gen.

Some points regarding the transmissions Jay The 955 and 957 Cayenne automatics had an Aisin unit, not ZF. As an owner of a 957 GTS Manual and a 955 Turbo S, I don’t think this SUV needs a manual. First gear is impossibly short and the clutch and shifter feel aren’t nearly as precise as a 911. It’s still enjoyable, but driving the Turbo, I don’t miss it.

9PA is the most solid cayenne ever. They were just to costly to build. They ditched the low range too after this model. Maybe a bit outdated design today, but still feels like a new car. They are just well built SUV. You have to try either 9PA GTS or a turbo with air suspension and PDCC. its a huge difference! The turbo may give you lower gas consumption though.

In something this big you need low down torque for everyday driving, as James noted. The V8 Diesel has double the GTS torque, and similar power. And does 30mpg. The V6 diesel manages 35mpg, and is actually the better long distance cruiser, but is slow, and feels like a Touareg in a pretty dress.. It's the V8D torque that makes the Cayenne the car it should be. James, you may miss the noise of the GTS (I mean, who wouldn't), but makes sure you try a V8D before you make any decisions. As a daily, it's impeccable.

Cayenne GTS owner here, PDCC is a MUST!! A 2tonne tank cornering as flat as a 911 is something else. Serious cars for the money and the pick of the bunch. The interior in the GTS makes all other Cayennes look awful with their flat shiny seats, that was one of the main reasons for me getting the GTS over the turbo. The GTS is just missing the turbo gauge cluster! Air and PDCC makes the Cayenne a superb car for all driving moods.

My recommendation: Get a low"er" milage pre facelift Turbo S with lots of options and a cool color combination. Thats the most special cayenne you can get for around 10k. Though I guess a facelift turbo will probably have some reliability (and styling) benifits

  • @GoldenCroc

Dont know how prices compare, but except for the extra "s" the facelift is the same or slightly better in everything. Of course, the lure of having a "unusual model" might well be worth it. Another thing is a E81 powerkit Turbo. The powerkit is what later was renamned to the turbo s as a runout special.
