Ok so I'll try to list a few advices here as I can (and will probably edit after I finish watching the video): - The circle around your ship is quite useful for winds and such (you may know that already, but it's worth repeating). Green is good, red means you won't advance (basically, try to go against the wind... although it can be useful for "rear march" of sorts). There's also indications on the loading of the guns and the state of the planking there. - When you capture a ship, and want it to move fast, deactivate the weapons. The crew that would otherwise serve them will be free to rig or maintain the ship that way. - Double clicking on an enemy ship not only lets you decide more precisely where to shoot, but also tell you the type of ship this is (which becomes less useful as you learn those by hear, but still can be useful to learn them). After edit, seems you got that now. - The enemy fourth rate are excellent prizes. When well equipped, they're arguably better than your own frigates (as they can take the reinforced hull, rigging, sail and carriages upgrades, making them not only faster but far tougher than your own ships). Same remark, you got that. Edit 1: - As you saw, cutting close to a ship's front can cause a rigging shock. It can be useful when you give your side to an enemy ship... less so when it's one of yours. The ship ramming will loose one mast anyways. Edit 2: - Don't be afraid to board. When you outnumber the enemy by about one hundred, it's largely enough (for fourth rate). The enemy fourth rate, in this campaign, are solely lacking crew, which means the frigates you have can somewhat easily take them down (and make a really good prize). - If you still do want to soften them up, which can be a good idea anyways, start by using round shots. Once the planking is gone, grapeshot will do a lot more crew damages. But the balancing can be tricky as you don't want those ships sunk. Edit, you got that. Final edit (I should reall watch the entire video before commenting). - Industry have a third level, which unlock the "fun" guns. See, 18pdr and above, along with all the carronades and such. I highly recomend it. - You get experience from all missions and secondary objectives. I'd highly recomend you spend it before you repair your ships/upgrade them as it can save you some money. - You flagship still is the Essex (as your character still is commanding it). You may want to change that (not that it really does have an impact as far as I know) by putting your character in charge of another, larger, ship. - Upgrades are costly, but worth it. Try to push a few to the third level (by the tech tree) and don't hesitate to diversify them a lot. All firepower is good (really even), but having a fourth rate S.O.L. that can outspeed a Requin and turn faster than them all the while having its planking boosted even more is... just terrifying really. That's all I can think of at the moment, as always, love the content and I'm quite happy to see you pick up one of my favourite recent games!

BTW, getting in behind the enemy and shooting through the stern down the whole length of the ship is called "raking" the enemy. It is by far the most effective way of destroying the combat effectiveness of a ship as there is no armor back there, and the cannonball can travel down the entire length and kill people the whole way.

22:50 Graaaapeshot, Stealth. If you are that close, reduce the crew. If not in preparation for boarding, then to impede their capabilities. (and you should board and capture wherever possible. It is usually quicker than trying to sink the ship.. 28:00 "Is it worth to capture this thing" I feel like I'm sounding like a broken record, but YES! Ships are always worth capturing - unless you are deliberately trying to sink them. And even then it is often quicker to capture and then scuttle them.. 30:00 She is not "still flooding", but flooding AGAIN - because you keep hammering it with round shot when grape would be more useful. Especially on that range...

True. I just hope he is going to learn to capture more and sink less. Just more effective that way. Plus he might get some nice ships rather easily that way - instead of sinking them... I suppose that's UAD-syndrome, where capturing is not an option... To someone familiar with Age of Sail, this is a bit frustrating...

Switching over to only heavy ships is a gamble. The more of them you have, the slower your line, and thus the harder it is for each ship to assist in each exchange of fire. If you do go for all-heavy ships, always split them up into multiple groups of no more than two or three, and engage different targets with each group. When you have light ships, keep them in a separate group. Keep that group on the side, skirting the main line at a safe distance. They are fast and can easily keep up and maneuver any way you need them to. Then engage the enemy line with your heavy ships and attempt to break it up in any way you can. Once an enemy ship becomes isolated, immediately pounce and destroy it with the light ships. Two Sloops can take out a Frigate rather easily if it has no support.

Short range, high spread, but when loaded with small projectiles - like grape shot - it wipes out crew by the dozen. and at 68 pounds of shot that's a lot of small projectiles flying through the enemy ship. If you outnumber the enemy crew nearly 3:1 you really don't have to bother weakening the ship's hull and killing crew with grapeshot, like you do with the Chesapeake vs the Ates Fesan. At that point it's better to just go up to it and board it right away. This way you take all the enemy ship's guns out of the fight so they can't be used to harm you. I find it's much better to try capturing the enemy at the start of the battle than the end for this reason. Additionally, a captured crew is reduced to prisoners on their former ship. If you sink the ship instead, then all the surviving crew just paddle over to another ship and bolster its numbers, making it harder to capture it by the end of the fight.

The only thing i can imagine in which such a small ship might be of use, would be as interceptor - to run down and catch fleeing enemies that are small enough - and therefore fast enough - to outrun the heavy-hitters.
