Everyone crying it should have been a red card are ruling on the outcome not the actual actions taken by the player. Gilroy commited to the tackle at a safe level, knees bent and dipping in, and then Rogers fell into it. He was down on one knee when contact was made, how could any player avoid that? Direct contact with the head so it's a card, was there mitigating factors? Yes, the player clearly dropped his level so it's a yellow. Yeah it looks bad and I hope Tom Rogers is alright but there was no malicious intent on Gilroys side.

No intent shoulder smash into the face. You expect that sort of tackle from Owen Farrell. He was getting his body ready so he could off load the pass. Intent or not shoulder to the head is a red card. Seems the Irish aim for the heads a lot when playing rugby.

I am between the idea if it should be a red or yellow. It looks horrific but the player dipped a tonne, and refereeing decisions are based on the action and not the outcome. Clumsy tackle that looks awful. I’m probably leaning towards red but it would be fairly hard to justify by the rule book of you really had to judge it.

That's outcome related, not action. The action was a tackle that started off at a perfectly acceptable height and stance and a tacklee falling to such an extent that the impact ended up being with his head. That is still a card but mitigated down to yellow. A couple of years ago, that would not even have been a card because it would have been deemed "accidental". Correct call in my (neutral) opinion.

@@Karma-qt4ji yh as of the last 2 yrs there's hardly any room to mitigate even if there was no intention to cause harm. Autumn internationals prove you wrong; Aussie hits Scot in the head by diving onto him while prone on the ground, we see a yellow card and a try disallowed; Welshman hits Aussie in the head by diving onto him while prone on the ground, we see a yellow card; Englishman hits South African with a swinging arm to the head (very similar to this tackle, by the way) leaving the SA player sidelined for 3 months with concussion issues, we see a penalty only. So much as none of us want to see players injured or sidelined with head injuries, it is still a contact sport and accidents do happen. As long as they are objectively and consistently assessed as accident, we should accept it and move on. Unless you want EVERY graze to someone's head to be red carded.

Absolute nonsense as Rogers was being tackled so going down and Gilroy was in the process of tackling milliseconds later so no way a red card. Real time and slow motion both show this. Scarlets ARE NOT ALLOWED TO APPEAL. The ONLY Hope is that the Citing Committee take action - though, unfortunately that will be of NO HELP to Scarlets. Further, even if the Citing Committee takes action, the Referee, the Person who SHOULD have taken action on the night, will suffer NO CONSEQUENCES. Further, as NIgel Owens has proven again and again and again, the Referee will not even feel any obligation to apologise to either Scarlets or to the Violently attacked Scarlets player.

No 14 (Craig Gilroy) makes direct contact with the head/neck area, leading with his shoulder and with both arms close to his side and not raised to prepare to tackle his opponent. This can be a matter of timing, especially when the injured party was losing height following an attempted tackle by Gilroy’s teammate, but such is the nature of the contact this did not look like an error of timing.
