Ullrich ataca a Pantani TdF 1998 etapa 16

Спорт

"what Marco did today was bad for me but extraordinary for cycling" Jan Ullrich said at the end of the legendary galibier stage of the tour 98. When he literally saved a tour that risked not even arriving in Paris due to continuous doping scandals during that edition. Jean Marie LeBlanc thanked him no longer inviting him from 2001 onwards. Here it is. This can be enough to tell what Marco's life was. The most exciting sportsman I've ever seen. one too special to feel good in this world.

Legends and my youth revisited. Watch very carefully at 13:45, clearly. Pantani doesn't contest the win but he does it incredibly well (maybe that's why he was so pissed with LA on Ventoux) At 13:45 I think you see he flicks the right elbow twice, very subtly but basically saying "come by now Jan".

I am Italian and I know Pantani very well by listening to his interviews and those of his father and mother, I summarize his story in a nutshell. He was a boy who was looking for the most extreme climbs to test himself since he was 14/15 years old, he became a professional cyclist and he only met serious injuries up to 97, in 98 his first year without any unexpected has won lap and thunder then they unjustly stopped him at the turn of the 99 because the Neapolitan mafia had received a lot of clandestine betting on Pantani in that round, all attacked him and he who had a clear conscience could not react to the end and began to take cocaine, finally he was killed in 2004 probably because he wanted to denounce the injustices of the UCI and the fact that they knew that the cyclists were all doped. He too obviously took something at that time because everyone did it and you can not win against those who are doped if you are not even if you are the strongest, he wanted to change the system and this was done before the tour that not he had him participate in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and then definitively, he was a good person ...

I would say Ullrichs best years were 96 and 97. In 96 he was just not allowed to go full gas because he was working for his leader Bijarne Riis. I always thought 96 could easily have been his TDF victory number 1. Well then in 2003 he was super strong as well, he destroyed LA in the TT's but waited for him on the climb when LA crashed. At the end he was 40 seconds behind LA. I think he could have won the 2003 TDF, he clearly was the strongest rider. So for sure Jan could have ended up with 3 TDF victories relatively easily. But well he was fair, and loyal which got in his way for victory. Potentially the TDF 2006 could also have been a TDF victory for him as he prepared very well and was thinner as well but we all know what happened back then....

Desde los 80 a hasta 2010 el dopaje ha sido una constante, por eso no se ven grandes batallas porque cada quien va con sus fuerzas al limite sin arriesgar mucho.

Pantani gifted him the stage. Look at 13.47. Marco even flicks his elbow to tell Ulrich to start sprinting. Then Pantani seems to have to take it easy to let Jan get around him. I'm not taking anything away from Ulrich here, just pointing out what appears pretty obvious to me.

Ullrich with almost 500 Watt here. Like Indurain in the mountains, e.g. up to Isola 2000. Just output high power continuously and everybody will explode behind you. Unfortunately, he was not at 100% of 1997, so that Pantani could catch up. Such a great stage!

@@Augenhose Ullrich optimum weight to be competitive was 70 kg. Lower he struggled to get the power out. His problem after 97 was he became complacent, and let himself too much in winter, and lead up to TdF he usually lost those excess weight too fast, and this made him vulnerable to Armstrong, whom usually perfectly prepared for TdF
