Whilst the engineering is impressive, the end result is really disappointing for the majority of visitors. Looked like it was going to be a car park. An exposed, concrete wasteland with no foliage, no trees and no natural life that will be windswept in winter and burning in summer. Missed opportunity to do something beautiful.

You can’t really put trees on the seafront. And clearly their main intention was to create a working harbor. But yes. It’s a real shame they didn’t create anything more beautiful than a vast featureless expanse of tarmac.

My own considered reaction is more muted ! If you have read my reaction to this development. I'm a little bit discommoded with it! And I suspect that the local area community there - are just as bemused by the notion as well! Widening out the main access road on the seafront makes for some sense - especially if it were to include an improved bus stop area for local bus services! But is it there ? By the looks of it! No! So I remain pragmatically bemused by this development.

@@stephenfarthing3819 How many times are you going to moan about the development. Do you know anything about Ullapool and its needs? I think you'll find the locals will be more than happy that a useless part of shoreline has been transformed into a tourist attraction (yes people DO pay to dock at marinas and spend money locally!) and tidying up an area of the front which has, since I first visited in the early 60s, been rather an eyesore in an otherwise gorgeous little harbour town. Notice I said 'harbour' because the harbour is the most important part of the community. It gets a thumbs up from me, especially as there is ample opportunity to use the space created, which im pretty certain the locals shall do.

And a line of lovely painted ramshackle huts touting for tourist day boat trips out around the Summer Isles, Isle Martin or fishing, dolphin, birdwatching. What a vast change from 1964 when John and I manhandled our bikes up the ladder onto the dock from the ferry boat that brought us across Loch Broom. In those days you had to pull up the flag on a pole to call for the ferry! No pleasure sailors in the harbour then. Just a few fishing boats going about their daily work.

Yes, the ferry was an open boat that was pretty well full with two bicycles and our bags! It seemed an awful long climb up the ladder with a bike over my shoulder. Lots of changes in the North of Scotland since those days, when most of the A roads were only single track with passing places and small turntable ferries where there are now bridges. Bed and breakfast was from 9shillings to 10/6d!

As others have said, fantastic engineering. But it’s £10,000,00 for a few benches and seagull feeding spot. That dock could have been put in without the new quay. They could have just reclaimed the whole area to the pier in front, built some lovely new leisure focused harbour buildings, and landscaped public space for the waterfront houses and make their money back on all the engineering costs.

My reaction to this - is mixed ! I have actually been to Ullapool to stay once at the old Westmoreland Hotel in the 1990's and I have gone through the area on a more recent Coaching holiday in the late 2000's - I liked the general charm of the place - with this recent construction. I wonder if it has something to do with more recent events? I suspect that it's likely that it does! I am uneasy about it! And I suspect that I am not alone in lack of enthusiasm for that! I suspect that the local area community would be discommoded as well!

There was a major public consultation and the only objections we heard were from people who didn't live here nor use the facilities. The road was too small for the ferry traffic and parking, the old sea wall was crumbling and needed raised due to increases in poor weather, and small boat operators couldn't use their boats in the winter as can't be insured on moorings. All these issues have been addressed, plus we have a area that people are using to sit, eat, play music, etc. Thanks for keeping it quiet but afraid you have the wrong view of the project and the views of those living/working here. Come up and see it and speak to those living here rather than attack it and make up opposition that doesn't exist. @@stephenfarthing3819

Brilliant Timelapse, the improvements have made a massive difference to help traffic get along the front of the harbour especially in the busy summer months when there’s cars and camper vans parked everywhere.

At 12:45 they park a paver there and everything seems fine. But at 12:50 it comes again and seems to have a leak or something, its hopper is slowly opening up over several hours.

How much did the sea level rise due to this reduction of available volume?

Hi thanks for your comment and opinion. The time-lapse only shows the project from one angle, I would recommend you watch my other videos of the project to give you more insight. kzread.info/dash/bejne/la14m7l7e7ezqrA.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/fImt0bqwe9W9fps.html

This is a good investment as it improves access and brings visitors into town. Don’t let the marina be used for permanent berths as this is counterproductive

Hi Malcolm thanks for your comment, more info can be found in these videos below, not that the berths are for both local and visitors. kzread.info/dash/bejne/la14m7l7e7ezqrA.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/fImt0bqwe9W9fps.html

Very Interesting. Can anyone tell me the purpose of the area which is dug out and a liner put in at around 5 mins into the video. The finished area doesnt seem to look any different from the rest.

Likely to prevent any plants taking root and breaking through the tarmac. My guess is that large tarmac area between benches and sea wall has dual purpose as pedestrian area and loading area for the new mooring spots. So it needs to remain flat, clear and accessible.

Money well spent. True it would look better with a few Palm trees. But they can be added later.
