Splitting hairs, and furthering the "colonialism is bad" trope, doesn't change the fact that both places are nations. Just because one is more homogeneous than the other doesn't change the fact that a Black Muslim born in Poland- is Polish. Every country has diversity to some degree- it's primarily nationalism that unifies them. Look at all the great Black athletes from the Netherlands. If you tried to call them Kenyans, or Somalians (or whatever African country their ancestors emigrated from), they'd smack you upside the head. So would most of their White countrymen. Nationalism isn't a dirty word.

I'm from southern Ukraine and I have family members ranging from looking like Bulgarian and Romanian, others who look northern Russian or Finnish, others who look Armenian or Gerogian, and some who look Tatar or even Central/East Asian. Ukraine is in the middle of the Eurasian Steppes - the Cossacks who are the foundation of the Ukrainian ethnicity and who I directly descend from, were a semi-nomadic people who descended from a mixture of Slavic, Turkic, Iranic, Mongol etc. people. Slavic people themselves were already pretty mixed. Because of this Ukrainians can look many people in Eurasia outside of Europe, so many of us don't fit the phenotypical definition of whiteness. I often get Americans looking at me weirdly when I say I'm from Europe. And me and my partner who kind of shares my look are often asked if we're Mestizos (well they ask if we're Mexican but I'm assuming it's because they thing we look Mestizo). Not to mention in Eastern Europe we never had a concept of race like westerners did. People were grouped by their ethno-religion similar to Middle Easterners. We have a completely different culture and completely different appearances from many western Europeans and historically westerners have seen us as savages. Especially nomadic and semi-nomadic ethnic groups in Eastern Europe. So I find it funny that Americans really think that they can separate entire continents or sub-continents using such broad concepts. I'm pretty sure most of these Americans saying these things no nothing about Eastern Europe or our culture. Like seriously there are entire ethnic groups in Eastern Europe that would never be viewed as "white" by appearance alone like the Nogai or Kalmyks or the Roma - most of these groups have little to no individuals that have western European-like appearances. To add to that our cultures are very diverse and in Eastern Europe not only are there Christians (and many who are completely different Christians than western ones), but also many Islamic populations, and even Buddhist ones like Kalmyks, and some Shamanistic practices. Which is another confusing thing when I see in Anglo media that for example the Polish border guards were letting only Ukrainian looking people in but not i.e. Middle Easterners. This is hilarious.. like how do you distinguish Middle Easterners from many Eastern or Southern Europeans? Do Americans actually thing that Europeans are this homogenous group completely separate from the people they neighbor despite the fact that genetics have proven that the bulk of shared ancestry in Europe came from Middle Eastern Neolithic farmers? Not to mention Eastern Europe has as lot of cultural similarity with the Middle East, parts of Eastern Europe including Ukraine were part of the Ottoman Empire.. and I see a lot of similarities in our food, rituals, dances, music etc. more so than I do with some western Europeans. Americans really need to realize that there social constructs often don't work outside of their society.

Its satire. He's literally exposing how Americans determine white and how stupid it is. It's a shame this IS how many Americans do understand Eastern Europe, but I can't go without saying that the few Eastern Europeans that do tend to have more "European" features don't use it to their advantage or shame the rest that don't. If that white on white crime occurs.. lets not mention how as a whole they treat Non-European. I've heard Eastern Euros speak as is they are they same species as Euro's and completely unrelated to anyone else. Its a shame because you'd think they'd have a little more compassion for being considered a bit indifferent (based on religion, practice, diff facial characteristics, language, food and dance), but that superiority tends to take over. I understand what you express (married to a Eastern Euro). This mentality exists because of racial disproportion based on appearance in the majority of the world. Minorities in the US have more intrigue when it comes to other minority groups from abroad. Wish I could see that reciprocated (racially ranking aside). This may be US related, but it can't go with out saying that it subtly exists abroad.
