Ukrainian prisoners of war say they were tortured at Russian prison - BBC News

Ukrainian prisoners of war have said they were subjected to torture, including frequent beatings and electric shocks, while held in Russia, a BBC investigation has heard.
A dozen former captives described extreme violence and ill-treatment, apparent violations of international humanitarian law. Many of them surrendered in the city of Mariupol last year.
They were taken to a detention facility in the southern Russian city of Taganrog - before being released in exchanges.
Russia's defence ministry did not respond to several requests to comment on the allegations. It has previously denied torturing or mistreating captives.

And I remember this "girl". She was shown on TV with a sniper partner, caught on the way out of Mariupol with crying children in the car. They said that these uncle and aunt stopped the car, shot mom and dad and drove to the checkpoint.

This is why it's so important that Russia isn't allowed even the smallest victory in Ukraine, and is kicked out of Crimea. The oldest Ukrainians will tell you that dealing with Russians is far worse than dealing with Hitler's Nazis. This will also make Ukrainian soldiers fight so much harder, rather than surrender, because dying on the battlefield is vastly less painful than what Russians will do to anyone who becomes their prisoner.

@@kasondaleigh in the short term yes, but the soviet union was fileting their own civilians alive and force feeding themselves their own entrails for being a dissident who went against the governments strict rule "Do what russia says and you wont get hurt" - the russian dictator, who is willing to wipe your entire family from the earth, with acid baths or lifelong enslavement in uranium mines, if you say anything not allowed by the government. USSR civilians killed by russia between 1945 and 1988 over 50,000,000. Russia killed more of their own, than they killed nazis. But of course when you went to the market in rustov on dawn in the 70s and said to your parents "look we could grow extra food and give it to people", the government deemed that as capitalism and you were sent to re-education as your parents were sent to the gulag Because if you weren't being only self sufficient and nothing more, you were thinking like an enemy of the state, and the KGB/FSB would be swift to talk to you and give your children a new home while you were given a new 20 hour a day job mining uranium

@@terransunited In fact, the post-war USSR was less violent than the pre-war one, especially after Stalin's death in 1953. There were no 50 million anomalous civilian deaths (not to mention intentional killings) in the period from 1945 to 1991 in the USSR. The deadliest periods in the history of the USSR are the revolution and civil war in 1917-1921 (military losses of the parties are about 2 million, about 2 million emigrated, the total losses of the country are difficult to calculate, perhaps 10-15 million), the famine in the Volga region in 1921 (the number victims are difficult to calculate, perhaps about 5 million), a great famine in 1932-1933 (in Ukraine and in the West it is called the Holodomor) (total losses are difficult to calculate, perhaps about 8 million), Stalin's great terror in 1937-1938 (the number of victims about a million) and the Second World War (in the USSR the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945) (the total number of losses is about 26 million, of which about 12 million military and about 14 million civilian). There were no such great tragedies in the post-war USSR. Actually it was not the worst time. For example, the population of Ukraine within the USSR in 1955-1985 grew from about 40 million to about 51 million. After the collapse of the USSR, the population in free democratic Ukraine in 1991-2013 decreased from 51 to 45 million people.

Chinese defense minister arrives in Belarus as tensions with NATO rise China's defense chief arrived in Belarus for a three-day visit aimed at strengthening ties with Russia's staunch ally, as NATO member states beef up border security with the country. Defense Minister Li Shangfu - who aims to step up military ties with nations around the world - flew from Russia and was received in Minsk by his counterpart, Viktor Khrenin, according to Bloomberg. In Moscow, China's defense chief pledged to step up cooperation with peers in Europe, Africa and Latin America - notably excluding the US, with which high-level military dialogue has been suspended. He called China's ties with Russia a "good model of cooperation".

My dear British countrymen cant you see whats happening ? While we struggle to pay our mortgages, rent, food and energy bills , our Tax money is being sent to Ukraine where it is disappearing. Do you know the war in Afghanistan we just fought and lost, cost £1 Trillion from our Taxes we paid. Now as soon as that war is over we now have the Ukraine war costing us umpteen Billion already . Pensioners cant retire till theres hardly any years left to live. Half the NHS beds have closed. No money to build new houses unless theyre for foreigners . How much will you stand ? Labour and Conversative have the exact same policies. No work for your children, nowhere available to rent, unemployment benefit for them £70 a week. Please shout it out . These 2 political parties are destroying Britain.

Multiple human rights organizations have investigated and found the widespread and systematic use of torture by Russia. If you were actually curious, you can start by opening the Wikipedia article "War crimes in the Russian invasion of Ukraine" and clicking the links. You won't because every "free-thinker" just believes exactly what they are told, just by the other side.

What has this got to do with this news story?! Is someone forcing you to pick between the welfare of Ukrainian soldiers and asylum seekers? If other people follow your example of trying to expand the scope of stories without limits, then how on earth are we ever going to get to the bottom of anything? there are plenty of news stories on asylum seekers, why not limit your comments to there rather than wasting everyone's time including your own

Russia attacked Ukraine, they are firing barrages of missiles at ukranian cities every night where there are civilians. These are the facts. Russia is the aggressor that is the fact. Russia jails their own people who oppose the government. Fact. Russia could end the war now by returning to their own borders pre 2014 that is a fact. The Russians have poisoned several political opponants outside of Russia such as in Salisbury U.K so nothing Russia says can be trusted.

The great, magnanimous and victorious Russian nation must demand that more referendums be held in other regions of Ukraine. NATO fart chief says! After a speech by the chief of staff, NATO backs off and says it is up to Kiev to 'decide conditions for the ceasefire' Head of the Atlantic Alliance tries to circumvent the statement of his chief of staff at a press conference today (17) in Norway. At the same time, Stoltenberg declared that he "detected no change in Russia's nuclear forces". This Thursday (17), NATO Secretary General Jen Stoltenberg tried to "fix" the speech of his chief of staff made on Tuesday (15). "It is the Ukrainians, and only the Ukrainians, who can decide when there are conditions for negotiations and who can decide at the negotiating table what is the acceptable solution," the head of the alliance was quoted as saying by Reuters.
