    So what the Professor is saying is that Ukraine does not need a massive offensive in the South. Just cut-off Crimea's three supply routes (bridges), trap Russian forces within and North of Crimea without supplies (and during the Winter) and Russia would simply see the Region as a liability.

    Putin is never going to abandon Crimea under any circumstance. Its literally Russias only warm water port. Its 90% ethnic Russian and Pro Russian. There is not a single major power in the world that would be ok with only having a seasonal navy. Losing Crimea makes Russia a seasonal Navy. Crimea and Donbas are not going to go back to Ukraine. Its naive wishful thinking they will. Ukraine will open up the water to Crimea as part of peace terms.

    The Germans in WW2 took extremely heavy casualties as they retreated from the Crimean when the Russians were advancing westwards and tried to trap them on the peninsula. The Kreigsmarine(German Navy) took heavy casualties also when they tried to do a "Dunkirk" in miniature. The Russian Navy also has to stay further out inti the Black Sea since the sinking of its flagship by Ukrainian "Neptune" missles. At the moment the Russian forces in the Crimea are in a geographical cul-de-sac.

    I've just read two books about the origins of the SBS and SAS during WW2. These missions, the bridge and airfield attacks are straight out of chapter one! The SBS spent a lot of 1942-43 watching bridges where trains carrying fuel and troops would cross. They got the times and then dropped by Submarines, canoed to where they could be blown up either just as, or just before a train went across, then paddled away back to the sub. The airfields in North Africa, Eastern Med. countries, France and latterly Germany were attacked using small raiding parties of SAS, who would watch, sometimes for days, then attack before disappearing back into the countryside/desert. The countryside around these fields is in places so remote no one has seen there since WW2. Hiding a small force would be very easy for highly trained forces. It might be a fantasy from reading about too much daring do, but the Russians have stated they strongly think it was UKSF involved in both scenarios.

All of East Ukraine can only speak Russian. They don't speak Ukrainian. Now after 30 years of being on a other side of a line in the soil without any benefit or cultural infusion, we're told slavic people are willing to kill themselves to serve the corrupt politicians in Kiev instead of the corrupt politicians in Moscow.

    Bit like the Doolittle raid I reckon. Little strategic value, but a morale booster for Ukraine. Having said that, it is likely to force the Russians to redeploy the air defenses to 'within' Russia and therefore 'away' from the front lines.

    Yes, and I think the attack may have partially failed. The aim was likely to take out a lot more planes. The problem is then that after such an attack Russia will beef up its defenses and there then isn't a second chance to launch a similar attack. It's similar to the drone attacks the Houtis have launched against Saudi Arabia. The first few did quite a bit of damage but recently such attacks tend not be very successful. The only way to get around that problem is to launch such attacks on a massive scale like Russia is doing against Ukraine with cruise missiles.

  • @smithcj218

    I still think that this 'may' be Russian on Russian in all honesty, but that all said, Russia can't get all excited about this type of action when they invaded a sovereign Country aka Ukraine, without any cause, so if Ukraine has repurposed this tech, then fair play to them, but at least whoever is doing this is hitting military targets and not civilians, unlike Russia.

  • @stupidburp

    @stupidburp

    Yes it would be feasible to attack those Russian air bases from the ground nearby with mortars or other inexpensive and plentiful weapons. Vietnamese commandos did this repeatedly against USAF aircraft based in Thailand during the Vietnam War. They did only minor damage but the US and Thai forces had to increase security to counter this threat. Russia lacks the manpower to effectively protect all of their bases and other potential targets. They are sending them all to the front lines.

    This is why Michael Clarke is the genius he is. Everyone keeps saying "Ukraine can't take Crimea militarily" but that's not the point. If Ukraine repeats what they did in Kherson, it may take time but it'll be much easier and with far fewer losses than an overt attack. If Ukraine takes Melitopol, Crimea becomes an island to the Russians which makes logistics just that much more difficult and Melitopol makes strikes in Kerch much easier. With winter coming, it may only accelerate events.
