let's hope that things get better in ukraine again faster than in bosnia. there's some chance that it will, since if the russian military leaves, there generally won't still be enemies living close together like there are in the balkans. it seems to me, without detailed knowledge, that the balkan people have also generally done a really poor job at the whole truth and reconciliation thing. it seems like ethnic relations in rwanda and south africa for example developed more positively. probably because those places were centrally governed, whereas the balkans remain politically fractured with the different sides propagating different narratives in their media and schools. other countries show that recovery is possible even after genocide, I think the leaders in the balkans (including the foreign administrators) must have missed a lot of chances to bring people together and failed to treat reconciliation as the priority it should be.

@Adrian Cullen same was in former Yugoslavia and for us this is like opening old wounds. But after all we are all Europeans, we all are helping them on all sorts of ways, and they will win. We crushed at the end military force 10times stronger in 1991, we lost Vukovar but we crushed them, with almost nothing.we did coz we were fighting for our lives,liberty,families, national identity, country. They are doing same against someone who denies them their identity and country and is much stronger. Putin is old man stuck in past, like it is still SSR and he is doing something what was last seen in 1939. Someone would say last time was 1991 but i do not agree, coz fall of Yugoslavia was different. All our countries and liberty is in danger' we all will fight if he attacks our countries, and Europe too. We all are different nations, share different but linked histories but we all are Europeans. Europe spilled too much blood over centuries, time is for new Europe. United one, no matter which country is part of EU, which is not ,we all are here.ukraine will preveal and win. And maybe EU should force some kind of obligatory medical exem for every European country leader after he/she passes 60,especially 65...

This is bringing tears to my eyes. How can you trust a government that does this to people?

Shall I become desensitized because it’s not a new concept. Every single person from my family (parents, grandparents, greatgranparents etc.) have been in some way harmed by Russia and have seen what it is capable of. Nobody in the West really talks about it but during WWII it was actually Russian army that people feared more than anything. More than Nazi German Army. And I think it says something. Central and Eastern Europe has absolutely no doubts what Russia really is. Times may have changed, but Russian and Kremlin methods are exactly the same as used 100 years ago. Nothing's changed in that regard. But the West unfortunately saw a very misleading vision of the country and believed that negotiations and diplomacy is the way to go. No. Not here. What Russia wants, it gets, in any way possible, including war. The comment is long, I know and I'm sorry for that but I just wanted to clarify a few things. I see the consequences of this war with my own eyes as refugees flee to Poland. It's unbelievably horrific, but knowing Russia, unfortunately it was predictible.

Great job by Poland and Moldova. I'll have a look where I can donate and maybe put in some volunteer work here in Switzerland once some reach here. I'm a bit concerned that I did not do the same for the refugees from the Middle East in 2015 and did not feel very helpful at all at the time. It could be some lingering racism, I suppose.

well, it would be most helpful if they got enough military support that they wouldn't need to flee or could return soon, but otherwise these people have relatively good chances to be treated well compared to refugees from just about anywhere else. afghans for example are in bigger trouble.

The biggest challenge for Poland is to provide shelter for all those refugees. The winter is not over yet and they cannot stay outdoors or in tents. Poland will need some support but the will for help is there.

My heart goes on with Ukrainian people! So sad!!!

A quick note for the BBC on the refugee issue. The people fleeing from Ukraine are not seen as a threat to Polish, Hungarian, Slovakia, Romanian or for that matter broader European culture. Those who came across the Mediterranean may be a very different thing.

Seeing innocent people, especially children, suffer for things they have nothing to do with just crushes my heart.

When war happens the women are left with children and with no husband's/father/ or brother. It's heartbreaking really.

And where was your heart when these "civilians" allowed their government to kill civilians in Donbass? With their tacit consent, 9,000 women, children and the elderly were killed in the Donbas. And now they are running like rats from the men of Donbass coming to them to pay off the bills. You're just a hypocrite.

😢😢😢this is so heartbreaking. I’m speechless..how can this be happening in 2022? The world just gone through such suffering bec of covid. And now this. How can a human being so inhumane and invade a peaceful country just like that?

Phillipine should learn from this. West are not to be trusted. They will give you comforting words when war happens, they want you to fight their war, theyre not gonna send you their soldiers, they will sell you weapons yeah. Usa is "uniting" se asia to push their agenda in the pacific, beware be smart, elect your governement wisely. Spot the puppet, dont wait until it turns like ukraine. @@billytan5505 yes instead we should align with aggressors like Putin and Xi Jin Ping who has already claimed much of the West Philippine Sea. Fantastic advice. /s PH is luckier than Ukraine in this regard because we have a mutual defense treaty with the US that has been in place for 70 years. So anyone declaring war on the PH is automatically declaring war on the US. We also have bilateral defense treaties with Japan, South Korea, and several ASEAN neighbors. If you’re wondering how useful any of these treaties are, remember that the US liberated PH from Japan in WW2. In return, PH was very active during the Korean war, sending 10s of thousands of troops to support the South Koreans.
