Ukraine frontline fighting: the Battle for Bakhmut - BBC News

In the east of Ukraine fighting continues to rage over the city of Bakhmut. It’s the longest-running battle since the Russian invasion.
Bakhmut has been fought over for seven months and tens of thousands of Ukrainian and Russian troops have been killed there.
Huw Edwards presents a BBC News at Ten special report by Quentin Sommerville and cameraman Darren Conway - who spent time on the frontline with Ukrainian soldiers just 500 metres from Russian forces.

Been to war 3 times now in my military career, it plays on your nerves, you experience horrific nightmares, but somehow it becomes the norm, until peace time, then it comes back with a vengeance.... you must prepare and fight that battle too. God bless these guys...glory to Ukraine...😢

Pretty much. Overall I think that with our military support Ukrainians will be more than able to hold off these barbarians. The counteroffensive in Kharkiv succedeed because Ukraine outnumbered Russia on that front 8 to 1, and Russia had less men deployed than Ukraine up until November, thats when the counterattacks everywhere should have gone ahead. Now they are roughly equal in manpower, with more and more Russian soldiers arriving day by day whilst Ukraine has already had to conscript old men and teenagers as young as 16.

Maxim gun is perfectly OK, if it is mounted in semi static position or on the vehicle, because it is heavy. It is incredible reliable and can fire for hours without any stop - due to water cooling. So, if properly used, it is a capable and dangerous weapon. BTW - the extremely popular in the US Army the heavy machine gun M2 was designed by Browning and was introduced at the end of 1st Worl War. Nearly as old as Maxim.

These conditions in which Ukrainian troops are fighting against russian occupants are just horrifying. Surivivng in these ruins of a city must be incredibly tough. And still russians are not able to capture Bakhmut even after so many months of trying to achieve that. This only shows how stong and motivated Ukrainian warriors are. Even though their enemy has an advantage in practically everything, they are standing their ground with dignity. It's up to us to help these heroes, because with modern weaponry and equipment that we can provide, their fight will be even more effective.

Fighter jets are 'worthless' over Ukraine, and it's a sign of what US pilots and troops may face in future battles By Christopher Woody Thu, 16 March 2023 Ukraine is estimated to have lost more than 60 aircraft and Russia more than 70, according to Gen. James Hecker, the commander of US Air Forces in Europe . Hecker told reporters at the Air and Space Forces Association symposium that Russia's larger air force still has jets it could devote to the war, as does Ukraine - but there is an issue. "The problem is both of the Russian, as well as the Ukrainian success in integrated air and missile defense, have made much of those aircraft worthless. They're not doing a whole lot because they can't go over and do close air support," Hecker said. Long-range sensors and missiles allow Russian aircraft to target Ukrainian aircraft behind the front lines, further limiting Ukrainian operations, but Kyiv's jets continue to launch strikes on Russian forces, often relying on US weaponry to do so. As a result, neither side is able to provide close air support to its troops on the front line. US pilots and ground troops may face a similar situation in future wars, US Air Force leaders say. After a year of fighting, neither the Russian nor Ukrainian air forces have been able to take control of the skies over Ukraine. This has severely limited the role that fighter jets have played in the conflict, and it's a preview of what US troops could face in the future, US Air Force officials say. While Russian and Ukrainian aircraft are still active, each side's air-defense weapons - such as major Soviet-era anti-aircraft systems like the S-300 or newer shoulder-fired missiles like the US-made Stinger - have forced the other to make tactical adaptations, such as launching less-accurate rocket attacks from longer ranges rather than sending aircraft to provide close air support over the front lines. Ukraine is estimated to have lost more than 60 aircraft and Russia more than 70, according to Gen. James Hecker, the commander of US Air Forces in Europe. A anti-radiation missiles, which US engineers jury-rigged to operate with Ukraine's Soviet-designed jets, allow Ukrainian pilots to target Russian radars and anti-aircraft batteries and recently delivered US-made kits allow Ukrainian jets to launch gravity-dropped bombs from further away. Using those weapons and other assets, Ukraine's air force is able to do "a couple of strikes a day" at ranges "a little bit farther than HIMARS can get right now, but not real far out at all," Hecker said. The lack of close air support for Russian and Ukrainian troops and the thicket of air-defense weaponry preventing it is a departure from what US troops have faced in recent wars, according to Gen. Charles Brown, the US Air Force chief of staff. "We cannot predict the future of what kind of environment we're going to fight in, for one, but I fully expect it'll be much more contested," Brown said at the symposium on March 7. "The amount of close air support we will do will probably be less than we've done in the past, typically in the Middle East, because that environment was that we didn't have an air threat or a surface-to-air threat." Asked about Hecker's comments, Brown said that it was "spot on" to say that "in a contested environment it's going to be tough to execute the close air support." "Close air support in a contested environment, that's not what we do, no matter who you are," Brown added. --------------------------- What the TV "military analysts" are peddling on TV shows, is completely devoid of military tactical knowledge, rationale or logic-but if you know whom to listen to and when, then you will understand why the Russian operation looks and feels very different to the western foreign operations of yore...

So you support Bangsamoro secession from Philippines right? Or is it okay for you to take away their "Right to Exist", Huh? Besides, no one was trying to take away Ukraine's right to exist. Ukraine was trying to take away the Donetsk Republic's right to exist. Luhansk Republic's right to exist. They are 90% Russian speakers there, they are Russians, and Ukraine was banning Russian language and now banning Russian Orthodox Church. Isn't trying to ban someone's language and religion trying to stop them from existing? It's called "democide" and the Ukrainian Nazis are all for it. 75%+ of Ukrainian men fled Ukraine instead of fighting. Those who stayed are hardcore Nazis who want to kill all Russian speakers in Ukraine. All the soldiers admit when the war is over they don't want to allow the 2.8 million Russian speaking refugees to come back to the Donbass. They all say this. Even Zelensky made a joke in 2015, that the Banderites wanted war with Russia so they could steal Russian property like they stole Jewish property during WW2. Ukrainian nationalists view Nazi Stepan Banderas as the founding father of Ukraine. Yet now Zelensky is building statues to Stepan Banderas in Kiev, to a man he called an evil Nazi who killed thousands of Jews in the holocaust, now he builds his statue.

Actually no aspect of this war works like it worked in Great War. Its just for tv. Soldiers are there just to occupy the space so enemy cant claim it. 95% of UA casualties are not from other soldiers shooting. It's artillery, loitering ammunition, drones, mortars ect.

@hagestad Well you say that, but there are still three trenches and the Maxim Machine Gun, which incidentally dates back to 1884 and was already some 30 years old in 1914. It was first used in the Sudan Campaign against the Mahdi. One thing I doubt that the Ukrainian soldiers will have to endure will be the "Seam Squirrel" or body louse. I remember my paternal grandfather Arthur Kelly showing me the scars on his body caused by lice bites (remember the body louse takes much more blood per bite than its cousin, the head louse). However, they still appear to have mud and rats. Grandfather told some pretty grim tales about both of them!

Just because he steps in a trench and mud doesn't make it true... that's not journalism. Now Seymour Hersh's article about the US blowing up the Nordstream pipeline, the worst ecological disaster in world history and the largest release of methane gas in world history, that's real reporting. Too bad the world's worst eco-terrorists will not be held to account despite warming the planet significantly with their attack on a NATO ally.
