Ukraine could ‘certainly take Crimea’ as Putin loses grip | Hamish de Bretton-Gordon

"We know the Kerch bridge is the Achilles' heel of Russia. It's so much in the sights for Ukraine to attack and so likely that it will do at some stage. So that would really cut the head of the Crimea snake."
Hamish de Bretton-Gordon says Ukraine could "certainly take Crimea" following the US aid package, including ATACMS long range missiles which could be used to target the Kerch bridge.

There is no point in using ATACMS to try to disable the Kerch Strait Bridge! It's not the tool for the job. The bridge can only destroyed (as opposed to disabled) by taking out the pylons - and that's a job for surface-based drones. ATACMS could, however, be used to remove the booms and islands which try to protect the pylons, opening the way for the surface drones.

ATACMs are very capable of taking down the Kerch Bridge. When Ukraine is supplied with the right warhead. We can expect to see ATACMs in the mix of weapons used against the bridge. The M48 version replaces the M39A1’s 950 submunitions with a single 500-pound penetrating warhead. With M39s, the Ukrainians can target big unprotected targets: airfields, ammo dumps, supply depots, vehicle repair yards, et cetera. With M39A1s, they could target smaller unprotected targets: command posts, for instance. With M48s, they could demolish small protected targets such as underground bunkers ... and bridges. Indeed, bridges might be the most valuable targets on the target list when Ukraine gets M48s. Russian supply lines across southern Ukraine cross several important bridges, most notably the Kerch Bridge connecting Russia proper to the Crimean Peninsula. - Forbes

I agree atacms are not the missle for the job. They have ballistic trajectories and that makes them easier to shoot down. I think Taurus missles would be a better choice. More stealthy, harder to shoot down. Then again they don't have any of these. I don't agree that water drones would work. Its my understanding that the bridge footings are well protected with obstacles and they could not even get close enough to damage anything.

If Ukraine destroys the bridge, the airbases, the army bases, the logistic centres, what will Russia defend Crimea with. There are very little defence lines built between Kherson and Crimea, the river is seen to be the defence line. Russia regularly uses roads from Crimea to Melitipol to bring in logistics and troops, Ukraine can use the same roads in reverse. From the Kherson bridgehead it´s 80KM down the road. There are good defences on the Crimea border but precision HIMARS and AS-90 precision howitzers can do serious damage to those defences along with long range drones.

I am an independent voter and I see a bit differently. The Biden Administration has been seeking the approval of this package relentlessly. I fail to see how this Administration can be blamed for it. If any failures, it falls in line with the same failure of European nations who dragged their feet in being decisive, right from the get-go. They should have made a statement of objectives, leaving absolutely no doubt as to their commitment (and followed through with concrete actions). In this case, Russia would have to be afraid of us, not the other way around. Imagine a backward, kleptocratic, corrupt-to-the-core, authoritarian third-world country (Russia) taunting the entire world! That's pathetic. Every country in the free world shares the blame for not decisively dealing with Russia. Many languages are spoken in Russia, but only one is understood.

The west's production capacity is far greater in volume (other than artillery shells), variety and advanced technology. Binyon’s last analysis was woefully short on the facts as far as Ukrainian strikes are concerned, and Binyon seems unaware of the military/intelligence actions inside russia in the past eighteen months, especially on the railway lines in the East. A simple but effective military statistic is average unit readiness. If a unit has lost 30% of it's original capability, it is considered non-effective from an unsupported standpoint. The russian fleet has lost ~60%, although I do not have the actual value, I believe it's higher. They even lost their flagship. This means effective naval protection for the bridge is reduced to beans(20-40%). At this point, breakthrough, overwhelming, and stealth attacks become not only effective, but are *expected* to cause immense damage to the target. It's sad, in another reality they might have built such a structure as friends, not enemies.
