    Glad you didn't fall off mate - I hate climbing long ladders, got halfway up a full size (2-storey) ladder and couldn't go any further. The distance the bottom of the ladder is away from the wall is what scares me lol. I was going to say the your bottom ladder looked a bit too far away from the wall... you should tether it really or have someone stand on the bottom rungs to stop it slipping out, wall tether is a good option, basically a big bolt with a loop on the end and then you tie a rope to it and the bottom of the ladder. EDIT - just noticed mate you need a loop in the cable below the entry hole in the wall, otherwise you may get water running down the cable into the wall...

    I removed the thinner end that I showed removed from the dish end, I then used a 16mm drill bit into my loft, poke the thin end out from the inside and reconnect to the dish. This L - shaped end then connects into my network rack and the Starlink router / access point. Once I tidy the rack up I can do a separate video that shows how it connects in if that would be of interest.

    Be good if you run through the Ubiquiti setup you have. I currently have Ubiquiti with poor BT broadband and am thinking of switching to Starlink in the near future. Some questions I have are around the configuration of the Starlink router in such a setup. I’m presuming that the USG connects to the Starlink router and the Starlink wifi is switched off so it’s effectively operating as a modem?

  • @SpectrumGeeks

    @SpectrumGeeks

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Graeme, once I have neatened up the new rack I have put together at the new place I will deffo do a video to talk through the setup. In terms of your question, the USG connects to the Starlink Router / AP, and within the AP you just say you want to enable the router only function, this turns off the wireless and also means you can no longer access any of the Starlink stats or controls, as it then just acts as a dumb modem essentially.

    I've watched so many Starlink videos its ridiculous. I have just now realised I prefer ones where the videographer has some smarts. . . like you for example. Anyway enough p!$$ing in pockets . . . I would reset the system . . . look it up. This triggers a search for updates but can sort out speed issues apparently. Also, and I haven't watched all of this yet, any relevant speed tests need to be done through the Ethernet adapter. As the saying goes, you don't have a dog and bark too 🙂 I have read that it improves speed significantly and while I'm at it that router is quite directional. I know that from jazzing around with my brother's system, so always have it (as much as possible) pointing it into your work area if you want to continue using the router's WiFi component. In a basement or next to a boiler can't be . . . optimal. Convenience isn't what we are after just best practice. By the way, I'm on what's called fixed wireless here in Australia and my ping is around 30-40ms. You are getting the best latency times I have seen on any of the videos I've watched on Starlink. Obviously a ground station (gateway) and/or the satellites aren't too far away from you. Lucky you. Last but certainly not least; my tip as a retired linesman; rule of thumb for ladders is the 1:4 rule. So 1 out for every 4 up or 75% tilt. Also don't place them near an edge unless absolutely necessary and it is well clamped, that is just asking for a hospital bed. Greetings from Oz.

    100% correct. On Sunday I did a little overview video of my network rack, but essentially I am not using any of the Starlink router / ap features, I have it connected from the Starlink Ethernet adapter into my Ubiquiti UniFi Security Gateway, from there I have relevant services and port forwarding setup within the UniFi applications for my other appliances.

    In a remote part. Starlink site says 100mb for my area but seeing your first video it changes quite a bit in regards to speed. Currently have 14mb download with BT Broadband and anything around 20-70mb download with a 4G connection. I am a heavy tech user at home, work wise as everyone it’s a lot of teams calls and presentations, streaming, gaming etc. how has that experience been? A little concerned that your speeds have taken a hit since the part 1. Writing this early in the video though so hope that the new mounting and movement gives you a more solid connection. @@SpectrumGeeks Hi Dale, ok thanks for the info. So my next dilemma is whether to stop the work going on for the lease line (they need to dig up a road to put a duct down for the fibre to our house), and use a combination of Starlink and my current ISP Plusnet as a failover. I have created 2 WAN configurations with the Plusnet line as WAN2. It works very well in failing over when Starlink goes down (pulled the Starlink cable and the Plusnet line picks up the internet after around 7 seconds.) The Pros are that the combination of Starlink and Plusnet subscription per month is miles cheaper that the leased line, however I guess the main con is that the leased line would possibly be more reliable.. What's your thoughts?

Of course as its a leased line it's dedicated and so not shared and guaranteed 100Mb all the time. So thats what I'm up against when deciding about Starlink. Yes. I have brought my Tesla Powerwall 2 with me (still need to install), but need some building work to be able to add solar, and hopefully another battery.

    Here in the UK the Starlink Fair Use Policy states the following. Standard Service Plan. The Standard Service Plan assigns an unlimited amount of “Standard” data each month to customers. The Standard Service Plan is designed for personal, family, or household use. So yes in the UK its unlimited, and this has been my experience as a user of Starlink for the last 11 months.

    good thing you didn't die, otherwise you wouldn't have been able to upload the video. Fun fact: in 2023 more people died from fitting Starlink then of corn-hole 19.
