UK PM Rishi Sunak apologises for leaving France D-Day events early | BBC News
The UK's prime minister, Rishi Sunak, has said it was a "mistake" to leave D-Day commemorations in France early.
Mr Sunak returned to the UK early on Thursday, from events in Normandy marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
It later transpired he'd taken part in an ITV election interview.
After apologising, Sunak says people "can judge me by my actions when it comes to supporting the armed forces".
The UK will hold a general election on Thursday 4 July, which all parties are currently campaigning for.

What a disrespectful creep
What Sunak did was the most disgraceful act I have ever seen by a British Prime Minister in all my 70 years and has gone around the world and will not go down well with all those nations whose men and women served in the second world war and as you did not visit Omaha beach because you thought that cutting your visit short to give a TV interview was more important than paying respect to all those who died and were injured on Omaha beach to free the world from tyranny, I would not count on being welcomed in America in the future. I am an old British soldier, now 70 years old, who had family members that served in both world wars and other conflicts, as I have, and I have visited many first and second world war sites as well as all the Normandy beaches and know and have seen the price of freedom, but you thought that cutting your visit short for the 80th commemoration of the Normandy landings to give a TV interview was more important than paying the respect that all those who died and were injured off and on all the Normandy beaches was more important. The King, after his cancer treatment, all those veterans, mostly in their late nineties and older who attended, all the world leaders and representatives who attended, families who attended and everybody else who attended thought that paying respect to all those who died and were injured to secure our freedom was the only important, rightful and respectful thing to do for the 80th commemorations of the D-Day landings but you though otherwise and disgraced all those people and the UK.

@@johngreen8996 Hi. I was stunned that our Prime Minister left the commemorations early to record a TV interview and did not pay his respects to those that landed on all the beaches, and we have something in common in that my dads' brother, Edward Dobson served in our one of our paratroop regiments and was one of those who survived Arnhem and got back across the river, and he attended my passing out parade in 1971 with my dad and mum, looking every inch like the tough paratrooper he was years earlier. I am glad that your uncle survived and lived a long life, but I bet he did not like our wartime tea in the hospital?

Even if you don't care about the veterans and are leader of a country surely you have enough sense and decision making skills to pretend and fulfil obvious expectations. If that's how bad his judgement is what else has he completely messed up behind closed doors . Ok, you are sorry, you regret it, though what changes are you going to make to prevent this from happening in the future? Rishi is effectively abdicating responsibility by blaming whoever was in charge of his itinerary; if so, you would think some important change there is needed.
Well, what do you expect from somone that no one in the public voted for him!?
This unfortunately happens when you put your own success over your country and the ones who paved your way to sucess with their lifes. I can forgive many thinks but not a prime minister not loving his country. We have got a mercenary in our highest office...
He doesn't care, pure and simple😂😂
He left early because he felt like it 😂
Perfect example of today's politician compared to back then.
While Rishi Sunak was talking to the French president he should of mentioned that he will be returning the illegal asylum seekers for the French to process before sending them on their way.
Ridiculous
It seems as if he is not apologizing. He is such a selfish politician.
Someone explain this to me please coz the logic doesn’t add up. If his itinerary was planned before the election was called it makes this situation worse because now it’s obvious he was planned to leave early as a political gimmick only with no real reason to be back in the UK early. His original plan should have been to stay the whole day and a recent change should have been to leave early because of election campaigning- that at least would have made some sense even if still abhorrent.
Wow - using this platform to campaign rather than properly show some humility. Shameful.
Is he english?? He does not have any relation with D day!!

Most of the critics didn't even bother to show up to the event
I totally understand it looks bad, but if he had appointments booked as his advisor told him he had to go he did show up and show his respect to the veterans and apologise for any inconvenience
So he had decided to snub the event weeks ago when the itinery was set.

Perhaps he doesn’t feel British, Indian, or African (where his parents were domiciled). He’s got a green card for the States after all and his wife is a non-dom. He can jump ship any time, with his billions, and let the people of the nation go to hell. Are we surprised that this globalist who just let 2 million people into the country in 2 years, after promising to do the opposite, has any care for the people in it?!
