UK Metal Detecting Finds - Pondguru

Ойын-сауық

A summary of some of the finds I have made over the last year while metal detecting in North East England. The vast majority of the finds have come from short hunts on pasture land which has not been ploughed and most were found with a Minelab Etrac with the rest being located by a Deeptech Vista Gold, Deeptech RG1000 and Garrett Ace 150.
There would be around 25 more silver coins but I recently sold them as scrap silver as they were badly worn and not much use for my collection.
The plan for the next year is to get out on land where there was a bit more human activity and the ground has been ploughed regularly to find more really old coins and artifacts.
Since most detectorists avoid deep pasture like a plague it seems strange that I prefer pasture to ploughed but maybe that is down to using the Etrac for most of my hunts. It gets very deep, especialy with the large 18" x 15" coil and the sensitivity ramped up on quiet sites.
Thanks for watching.

I do try to put the odd bit of information into the videos so thanks for appreciating that. I like those other guys too. Dan is severely entertaining and roadkillsjim is whacked out to the max so it's no surprise those guys do well on the subscribers / views too. Thanks for watching the videos.

I look forward to welcoming you to the finds series. Viewers love the fact that they can see finds from different people found all over the world with different machines. Subbed you too. I hardly ever go to the beach as I live in the middle of the country but next time I do I'll take the detector. You seem to do well enough on beaches.

In the UK, snake belt fasteners have been used for centuries. May have started with Romans? but certainly way back to early medieval. Thats the only one I've found bt look forward to finding another. Thanks for watching and appreciating the videos.

No worries, man. Thanks for watching. The only problem over here is that much of the older history has sunk out of range of all but the top range detectors (e.g.GPX5000) and some even beyond that. Also, the trash from the last 2000 years of occupation makes picking out good finds that bit more difficult. Then there are the agro-chemicals destroying coins and the 'green waste' used as fertiliser which contains waste metal fragments which can ruin a good site....

I generally rub them with a paste made from baking soda and water and that will lift up nearly all the muck. Then I polish them with 'Silvo' which removes the finer tarnish and protects the shine.

Thats probably my favorite too but the gothic florin is a close second. The hammered was a bit of a joint effort as I went over it first but he was heading that way. I pointed him in the right direction to see if he could find the good signal I got with mine a minute earlier. He did and I was suprised when we dug up a hammered. A real rare find in my area. HH

I'd love to go all camo and compound bow but I've never done that due to it being illegal over here. Thanks for the offer of a shoot, man. I never get the time to do anything for more than a couple of hours so even a simple hunt with the detector is a couple of hours so I couldn't arrange a decent shooting trip unfortunately - most things are on a spur of the moment. I don't even get the time to go 'rabbit stalking' now - lol but thanks again for the offer, much appreciated.

Hi I'm surprised that you haven't, as yet as far as I can see, found any roman artifacts especially coming from around our neck of the woods. I've been out of detecting for around twenty years now but decided, after seeing your videos to start again, so bought an etrac about three weeks ago and had my first real hunt last week and found a couple of roman coins in a few hours and i'm not a million miles from you ! Keep up the good videos they are very informative and enjoyable. Keith

I sometimes use a toothbrush with baking soda paste and it helps get into the nooks and crannies but just rubbing the paste with my fingers usually does the trick. I don't bother cleaning copper coins as I haven't found a way to clean them without removing the patina except for a rub with clean fingers to remove the muck and then brushing with olive oil to keep the 'just out of the ground look'

As I hunt mainly pasture, yes definitely. It is good on ploughed too but for skimming quickly on ploughed I think the XP Deus recovers faster. All you have to do is just go a bit slower or alter the settings to recover fast 'on' and recovery deep 'off' when searching quickly for small shallow targets.

It was on pasture but it had been ploughed a few times years ago. The hammered was a bit of a joint effort as I went over it first but he was heading that way. I pointed him in the right direction to see if he could find the good signal I got with mine a minute earlier. He did and I was suprised when we dug up a hammered. A real rare find in my area. Olive oil is a good one - sometimes use that myself. I normally leave the coin in there for about a week to a month to lift up the muck then the coin seems to absorb the oil and gets protection and really brings up lost detail of really old coppers.

I'd just use a paste of baking soda and water after doing the spit and foil trick. That will remove any muck that can be lifted. Electrolysis can be used on silver too which works quite well but do it too long and the coin will get pitted.

Anywhere near rivers is normally good so you could start with your own area. Parks can be OK for modern tat butare normally strewn with rubbish. We're a lomg way from the beach too.

I would say thet for every 100 coppers I find, maybe one will be good enough to go in the collection. I do have a few but I used to try and clean them up which just ended up with me brutalising them beyond recognition. Now I just give the better ones a rub with dry fingers and they come up not too bad. I forgot to put them in this video but I got a nice George II Irish halfpenny on my last trip out - 1766. Gold is the target for this year - lol.

Although I have a good video editing program (Magix studio 16) I never use it as I haven't learned to properly use it - lol. I generally just bang all the individual bits of filming onto Windows Movie Maker. They should all load in sequence if you select the whole lot you want as their details should be numerical in order. Then because that program (or my computer) doesn't handle HD very well, I make the whole lot into wmv hd format by finishing as a completed video, then reload and edit.

Hey, we had to give up our silver to around that time. I have a 1943 silver dime, I think they stopped making silver coins around that time. Because I have dimes at the year of 1947, and they aren't silver. Maybe we were paying our war debt to the Japanese? By the way, I love your collection, you should hang them up on the wall, so people can see how beastly awesome you are.

Nice finds. Here in New England in USA I find mostly junk and the ratio of something good to junk is about 40 junk items to 1 good item. I need to invest in a better metal detector as for mine is a cheap $100 detector so it detects nails, horse shoes, pipes, pull tabs, bottle caps, toys, and other junk and about 1 in 40 will be something worth keeping. Most of what I find is also junk copper, however I did find an 1851 Large Cent, and a 1855 Silver Half Dime out by an old foundation in the woods in good shape although green corrosion and the half dime was dark grey. Nothing to get rich on, but the thrill of the hunt is worth it as well as the condition of the 1855 half dime places this cellar hole foundation structure of around the 1860s or so as an educated guess. Good idea to use the copper junk coins for kids to hunt for them. Some will really like it and others will try it and think nothing much of it. I have been trying to get my daughter interested in coins and she is kind of bored with them. I even went to the bank and got some rolls of coins and loaded the rolls with old coins for her to find to try to get that spark of excitement when finding an Indian Head Penny, Buffalo Nickel, and Barber Dime etc, but its not there. To her its no different than a canadian coin mixed in USA change. I then point out to her its worth and once again the excitement and interest just isn't there =( Hopefully one of your kids are interested in it to hand the coins down to or share the fun of the hunt with. =)

We have it really good over here for detecting. My latest video (uploading now) has two of us in a 'worked out' field finding more silver than copper which was most unexpected. Every field over here has coins in it no matter how remote they are as there has been someone over every square inch of land some time in the past. GL&HH

Pondguru In the 1840's / 50's, there was a bit of a push to decimalise the currency. Your Gothic Florin (one tenth of a pound) was the first step. Decimalisation or not, it was clear the old copper coins would have to go, and numerous designers made little model pennies in the futile hope their design would be used. I only found one, it took 20 years searching, and it's bi-metallic like a £2 coin. That's to show the tiny model coin and have a rim with words telling you what it is. One for the 'hit list'?

I haven't found any of them but I often see them for sale on ebay. There are numerous model pennies, half crowns, crowns etc. some of which are originals and others are modern reproductions. Some of the originals go for silly money. Feel free to send picture of the model coin you found if you have one as that sounds very interesting. Not sure if it can be attached to google+ comment but my email address is pondguru@btinternet.com

Pondguru Most of the larger denominations are toy money for use in dolls houses of the day and are a bit later, typically 1880's. I found a toy halfcrown with a very good copy of the Jubilee Head, back in the 1970's. That and the model penny are filed in boxes unopened for years. I'm sure they're not lost, but not easily found found either lol. The halfcrown is white metal and about the size of a Maundy 2d. Probably about time I looked them out.

Oh, man I found an awesome Maundy 2d from George II in the field near my house. Definitely one of my best finds so far.

Do you have any employee's? They could watch the store for you, and you would probably only have to go in 3 or 4 times a week.

Feel free to do a video advert promo thingy, no worries and I will add it to the start of an upcoming video. Not sure how facebook works as I seldom go on there but it seems that people post their group to other group pages and then people sign up or like, or join? I have a few video promos coming in from other people so now I just need to carve out some time for detecting then I can make some videos and get them used up.
