UI Underwent Tumor Removal Surgery [Otter Life Day 895]
At the end of December 2023, a large lump (mast cell tumor) suddenly appeared in Ui's right breast, and she underwent surgery to remove it in January 2024.
Ui seems to have a constitution in which the anesthesia is too effective, and she does not wake up even at the time when other otters would normally wake up and be fine.
In the evening, she looked very sluggish after waking up, but she managed to get up before the end of the day.
I would like to thank the vet and the staff at the animal hospital who took care of her.
The cause of mast cell tumor seems to be unknown, and it is hard to prevent it by diet and exercise.
I just hope that it will not recur.

Aty: A little boy otter who came to our house at the age of 9 months.
At first he couldn't even swim in the river, but now he loves the river more than anything else and swims in it all year round.
Whenever we go out, he always walks ahead of everyone, so he has come to be called “Captain Aty”.
Ui: A tomboy with comical movements.
Because of her ferocious nature, she had to go from one owner to another.
At first, she was so ferocious that Aty was too frightened to even touch her.
But Ui opened up to us and now she and Aty make out every day.
Aty and Ui have been issued a certificate of registration as an internationally rare wild animal and plant species.
Although Ui may appear calm today, she used to be so ferocious that people could not approach her.
After more than a year of being bitten, she finally came to live with us.
Otters are very intelligent and watch the people around them very carefully.
They will never open their hearts to you if you only have a superficial relationship with them.
They are also very active animals and require several hours of exercise per day.
They need to be walked outside or swam in the river for two to three hours every day.
The amount of exercise they get inside the house will never be enough to satisfy their needs.
Please do your research on otters before you think that “I want to keep one."
You need to think carefully about whether you can face them with your life.

I first noticed the tumor in May 2023, at the time it was the size of a grain of rice. We immediately went to see a veterinarian. The cytological examination revealed that it was a benign tumor and that there was no harm to her health for now. Since surgery would be too much of a burden on her body, I decided to treat it with medication. The lump was small until December 2023, but on December 26, the lump suddenly became larger. After much consideration, I decided to have it surgically removed because if it grew any larger, the burden of the surgery would be even greater. She was a little sluggish for a day or two after the surgery, but has been running around and playing energetically since then. Vets in my country give special intravenous infusions after anaesthesia so that pets could recover from it easier. As I see that’s not like this in many countries. I enjoy watching you and your otters. I wish ui wellness. I had a heart attack and died in August of 2023. Doctors brought me back after 6 minutes. Had 11% chance of surviving open heart surgery. Then a month unconscious on life support. Then exposed to covid while in rehab. Still recovering. You all help me see the better side of life. I'm sorry for little ui. My best to you all. ❤️

May Ui continue to recover and feel good quickly. She has so much love from her family and her fans.
So glad you went to the vet as soon as you noticed the sudden growth of the tumor. My female cat, just short of her 17th birthday, seemed fine, but then a tumor appeared and grew to the size of a walnut in about two weeks. ... just to note that tumors can explode in size unexpectedly. Hope Ui heals quickly. If she is sensitive to anesthesia, she probably can't take pain medicine, right? The way Aty covered her with kisses is so sweet.
We are glad that Otterman has swiftly discovered the lump and taken action about it right away. Meanwhile, we wish Ui speedy recovery and back to their normal routines enjoying their lives soon including swimming and exploring more beautiful streams. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Animals know. They always know. Ui knew that you were there with her after her surgery while she was fighting her way back to you, and Aty knew that she needed his gentle love and care. Even Mr. Cat knew that his support was needed. Oh 😢my heart is aching for poor Ui and brings back memories of my Love not coming out of anesthesia. So grateful that she is back and doing better. Thank you otterman for taking such good care of her...our love for them is so great because you share their lives with us and bring so much joy to me. @@TorrieG I figured I wasn't the only one reminded of our dear departed Baby Love with this video. 😢 Anesthesia is serious and you can't know in advance how an animal will respond. Sadly Love, despite her strong spirit, reacted badly. Fortunately, Ui is also a very strong girl and seems to have recovered nicely.

I’m glad that she seems to be ok! Anaesthesia with otters is always scary - I read a paper a while back they tried to summarise all the studies that have been done on how otters respond to anaesthetics. The side effects of anaesthetic medications on otters often seem to be exactly the opposite of what they are for almost every single other animal. Vets basically said that otters are pretty much the highest risk animals to sedate or anaesthetise.

We unfortunately saw that secondhand in May 2023 when Otter Love of LOUTRE, who was born with a cleft palate and managed to survive past 48 hours (she actually lived 100 days, long enough to start weaning and swimming), had surgery to repair her cleft. She survived the operation itself - didn't crash on the table - but had sort of a delayed reaction to the anesthesia and died several hours later, never fully coming out of it.

@@Soufriere84 Yes, poor Love. I was very sad to see that she had passed away. It was precisely because of her passing that I had started looking to see what research had been done on otter reactions to anaesthesia. It seems that, unfortunately, many of the vets who work with otters are not aware of these issues because the issues aren’t widely represented in the literature. These types of risks are why Otterman has said that he has trained Aty and Ui to lie still on command, so that they don’t have to be sedated for x-rays during their regular medical exams. I thought that was pretty neat.

Oh my goodness, I am so beyond thankful that Ui was able to be operated on and the tumour removed! Thank you for letting us know once the operation had taken place, because I know I would have worried. It's not about me at all of course! It is about dear sweet Ui, our wonderful Princess.
