UHMW Build Considerations

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Killshot Spearguns makes a speargun kit that uses a UHMW removable enclosed track. These are available for purchase from Neptonics and directly from me at Killshot.
In this video we discuss a number of design considerations in reference to the UHMW track spearguns. We point out a few common pitfalls and also suggest ways to solve a couple common issues when installing different types of hardware or options like reels. We learned most of this the "hard way" and hope this video will help you make the best speargun you've ever owned!
As always, we welcome comments and are happy to field questions from curious viewers.

    I use Watco teak oil finish and then use a hand-rubbed polyurethane finish. It doesn't flake but it does require 3-4 coats before it goes on the rack. Then I just wipe it down with oil from time-to-time to keep it looking good.

    Hey. Looking to build my first gun and having trouble find the teak blank from Neptonics. If I end up buying a piece of teak and cutting my own, what is a standard width of a gun blank?

    hey Adog4368...Depends on what you want to build. Most of the guns I build are 42-44mm x 32-34mm. My bluewater blanks are 2.25" x 1.75" You can certainly cut it down thinner but at some point you will have the wood will begin to flex and Flex is BAD.

    Could you do a video on the open track? It seems like the enclosed tracks are a larger piece of wood than the open track unless my eyes are deceiving me?

  • @killshotspearguns2522

    @killshotspearguns2522

    3 жыл бұрын

    The blanks are actually the same dimension, 42x36mm. The enclosed track is on the 36mm side and the open track is on the 42mm side. People occasionally think the enclosed track is too tall but it tracks well and does NOT flex. The track is deeper on the enclosed track which; 1. puts the shaft lower on the gun. 2. allows me to put the band slot in the middle of the gun instead of the bottom 1/4 3. removes more wood; wood is what makes the gun rigid (eliminates flex) I will do a open track video soon.

  • @killshotspearguns2522

    @killshotspearguns2522

    3 жыл бұрын

    Depends...For a concept on a total prototype I'll use a 2x4 or other cheap lumber. If I want a working prototype I'll usually use African Mahagony. It is cheap, will stand up to saltwater pretty well and is similar in density to teak so I get a feel for how it will need to be weighted. I can also use it for a few years if I want to. Once I get everything dialed in (trigger spacing, track, line routing handle bases, etc.) I'll keep it in the shop so I can measure against it when building the teak guns.

    Hi, can I use 2 x 16mm bands on a 7mm shaft?it's a 130cm spear gun I'm making with a 160cm 7mm shaft.

  • @killshotspearguns2522

    @killshotspearguns2522

    Yep, I personally use 14mm bands but I rig most of our longer guns (110+) with 16mm bands. I would only use two bands though as three will simply overpower the shaft and you will lose accuracy.

    @@killshotspearguns2522 OK, my measurement was wrong. I thought the length of the gun was the entire stock. It's a 110 I made. How do I get the correct length of the bands?

  • @DeepBlueSpirit2

    @DeepBlueSpirit2

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi brother, there are some variables so there is no exact rule. It depends. Do not overpower a 7mm shaft. It will oscillate when fired and it will kill shooting range. 'Less' can be better lots of time. Also the stretching and size of bands will depend also on the ability (or comfort) to be able to load a gun. You might even go for a thicker but shorter shaft. Less bend, less oscillation, similar weight - maybe even better range. For your 160cm @7mm shaft you can easily use smaller size bands. For 14mm (small ID) bands you might like a 65cm rubber. Nice to load and good acceleration. Test the gun on accuracy after - so it is known how it shoots. Save dives!
