11-21-2022 This is video of a U.S. Army UH-72A Lakota showing Engine Start & Takeoff at the Burbank Airport. United States Army Eurocopter (Airbus) UH-72 Lakota Registration #10-72166, Yr. 2010, C/N: 9413
The UH-72A’s of B-Company/2916th Aviation Battalion often operate in pairs as part of the enemy doctrine and can be seen during a mission over the vast and rugged Mojave desert. The aircraft is beloved by its pilots because of its maneuverability and responsiveness. From 2011, the Airbus UH-72A Lakota was introduced with B-Company and is currently operating five aircraft out of nearby Barstow-Daggett Airport. The aircraft are all painted in the ‘bruised banana’ color scheme and fitted with laser sensors for the improved MILES system on the skids and on the fuselage. Chief Warrant Officer 3 (CW3) Luiz Cardona explained: “We are also using the TESS (Tactical Engagement Simulator System), which is basically a part of MILES. Basically, it is a camera that has an IR-component to it that peers with the MSMODIM (Modular Smart Onboard Digital Interface Device) and the MILES system and allows us to engage and be engaged by the ground forces. We have some screens on board and with the camera we can zoom in and out, acquire a target and fire a laser.
The Eurocopter (now Airbus Helicopters) UH-72 Lakota is a twin-engine helicopter with a single, four-bladed main rotor. The UH-72 is a militarized version of the Eurocopter EC145 and was built by American Eurocopter (now Airbus Helicopters, Inc.), a division of Airbus Group, Inc. Initially marketed as the UH-145, the helicopter was selected as the winner of the United States Army's Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) program on 30 June 2006. In October 2006, American Eurocopter was awarded a production contract for 345 aircraft to replace aging Bell UH-1H/V Iroquois and Bell OH-58A/C Kiowa helicopters in the US Army and Army National Guard fleets. It performs logistics and support missions within the US for homeland security, disaster response missions, and medical evacuations.

The UH-72 is one cool looking helicopter. I didn't know there was different paint schemes other than the traditional "army green". Cool capture!

I can’t imagine why the US Coast Guard won’t replace the fleet of HH-65’s with these instead of more HH-60’s…

I don't remember the whole story it's been so long, but yes the US did try for the contract and a lot of people were not happy. As you know the UH-72 is a militarized version of the Eurocopter EC145 & built by American Eurocopter.

@@EdWhisenantAviation Not really militarized. It is a commercial off the shelf EC145C2. They are little race cars.

@@EdWhisenantAviation The National Guard flies one called the MEP. It is still just an EC145, but it has an L3 thermal, and a night sun. The Sokol aircraft in your video are part of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment opposing force at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, CA. They belong to the 2916 Aviation Battalion, but are under the tactical control (TACON) of the 11ACR for the training rotations. There are five of them (164,165,166,167, & 291). They have a day video and an L3 thermal. They also have laser beams for the world’s most expensive game of laser tag! Essentially, they fly around and snipe our tanks and Bradleys to train the armor crews how to deal with an enemy attack air threat. I hope that answers ALL of your questions!🤣
