As a Salvadoran, born after the war, I never really knew anything about this except for all the stories my parents and grandmothers told me about the war. They are survivors and hearing their stories and all the information I have studied on my own (sadly this is not well taught in schools) I came to understand the current situation my country lives in. How important it is to know our countrie's history so we understand the present. Thank you TED-ED for shedding light about this.

Here in the Philippines a lot of the history concerning Martial Law during the 70's to 80's (especially the human rights violations and economic downturn) was whitewashed and distorted, which aided in currently electing the son of the dictator who declared ML in the first place. Said son was running for president to clean up his family's reputation and role in the orchestration of the atrocities in martial law and is still denying that such crimes ever happened. So, record their stories and help in keeping and spreading them if you can.

There's one thing I'd like everyone to think about: The US government was complicit in these mass crimes. The perpetrators learned their criminal tactics in US schools. The US government sent military aid to the governments committing these crimes. There is, to this day, continuity between today's US government and the government that aided and abetted these atrocities is maintained. The US never had a revolution or regime change that eliminated the institutions and people who participated in and protected the perpetrators of these crimes. The agencies that did this are still up today.

Yes, as a Marine during the height of the war including working JSOC I can tell you that our country is ruthless, controlling, destructive, and greedy using the entire world like it is their personal bank and military actions are run by politicians who make $ off the suffering of the world. Our country was founded to escape and prevent exactly what it has become, entrenched untouchable lifelong politicians who rule together in the shadows for decades. Yet no one says or does anything. This will continue to be the way America controls the world until they are made to stop.

@@Linterna001 He’s mostly not allowed to talk about what he did directly but he has said in broad terms that what happened kept Central America from becoming a host to Soviet friendly governments. He can neither confirm nor deny anything but anyone who knows him and where he went during the 80s knows he was very directly involved in deeply clandestine activities. He was the unnamed gringo in aviators who was always around just before something happened. I don’t understand why my friend tolerates his presence.

@@whatisbow2865 It works in different ways, sometimes over generations. Some guys are good at stealing and murder so they cover their tracks. It takes a long time for the consequences to catch up. Sometimes they get away, but their children or grandchildren might pay. It can be a vicious circle.

The US has been complicit with many dictatorships. For example they allowed the Marcoses to stay in power in the Philippines and even saved them from the angry mob that would have caught and then executed them, like what happened to the Ceausescus of Romania.

As a Filipino, videos like these really hit close to home. We are currently experiencing historical erasure similar to this in our country, so much so that the sheer amount of disinformation has allowed former dictator Ferdinand Marcos’ son, Bongbong Marcos, to become presumptive president. Over 31 million people voted for him in the unofficial results, and while no one can be certain if all of these numbers are real people, there’s no doubt that there are people who were misled into voting for a man who denies the atrocities and debt his family was responsible for, doesn’t pay for his taxes, lied about his educational achievements, and is overall unqualified to run for candidacy. I’m so, so thankful for videos like these and I hope one day this channel covers our story, too. We need more people to know about what’s happening here.

The Spanish stayed for so long and were so aggressive in trying to get Filipinos to conform to their customs. and the Americans enforced their way of doing things once they overcame Filipino resistance. The films Heneral Luna and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral cover the latter really well in case you’re interested.

My mom’s family were Salvadoran refugees. I was born after the war in Canada. I didn’t know much about it. Thank you so much for educating about El Salvador, which is usually overlooked. I love your channel!

This is so cool and insightful. With the current political climate, I hope you talk about Philippine's Martial Law soon because the son of the former dictator is about to assume office, where he plans to erase his family's crimes and rewrite history, playing off that the Martial Law was a peaceful time. This would be really helpful as major sources and evidence of these crimes are starting to be erased now.

Lol, if you only knew about all the US involvement in Central, Latin America, Asia and Africa. The US education system is never going to teach you about CIA involvement with Pinochet in chile, or how the US invaded the Dominican Republic twice, and haiti, how the creation of Panama as a country was a manipulated revolution in order to create the Panama canal. Why would the US schools teach their kids that they are the bad guys?

Ted Ed should do a video on the atrocities of the Marcos regime in the Philippines, his downfall, and his disinformation campaign in the present.

Yes, please. The rest of the world knows and remembers what the Marcoses did to their own country, and now, there's just something tragic and amusing about the fact that it was only the Philippines who had easily forget. Our national library, which includes files and documents about the Martial Law has become inaccessible, them saying that they were "updating content and improving security". Never did I ever think I would be living in such times where historical revisionism becomes an actual threat and yet here we are.

One thing I have always noted is that most videos or texts on this subject say “the US Government”, and that sort of sanitises the issue. Instead of this, the governments should be named as under whose presidency and CIA chairmanship. The perpetrators need to be held accountable.

@@CestLePanda there is a movie called Voces Inocentes where they show kids from 12-13 yrs old being forced to be part of this war it’s really sad. I’ve visited some of the places where some of the gruesome things took place like soldiers taking the lives of babies and women. there still some people that lived through it that still telling stories until this day.

I've been to Morazán a few times since we have friends out there and my great great grandparents were from there originally. I've gone to the civil war museum there. Actually, in the middle of trying to dig into my family's history in El Salvador I found out last week that my deceased grandmother's house in La Union, where I've spent so many summers, was actually used as a jail by the military during the civil war in the 80s and not only did apparently many people die in there, but it turns out that at some point some of the people being held in there retaliated and murdered the sergeant that was in charge of the jail inside of it too. 😶

Please make a video about the EDSA Revolution as people in my country tend to forget our history. 🇵🇭

Something similar happened in Nicaragua. The U.S. supported the contras while the Soviet Union the sandinistas. We and other nations like Korea and Vietnam were fighting wars of superior powers, and created division among population for those supporting one side or the other. Unfortunately in Nicaragua, there is a dictatorship currently ruling, and of course what happened then contributed to today's reality.

The term for what you’re describing is “proxy war“. Many conflicts in the second half of the 20th century were really about the USA and the Soviet Union trying to prop up and establish governments in other countries that would benefit their own political goals. Since both sides had nuclear weapons, these two super powers going head-to-head could easily result in another Hiroshima or Nagasaki, so the proxy wars were essentially a way to exert a sphere of influence without worrying about total annihilation. Unfortunately, this was all happening when many former European colonies were still struggling to find their own identity and in some cases were still fighting for independence, so the whole thing really just degenerated into a violent and long-lasting mess.

As a Colombian this really hits close to home, as we are going through a similar process. I hope for all of those affected by wars let their truths be known and justice come for any of those who commited attrocities. I t might take a long time but I beleive it will come

The US has a long history of promoting not democracy, as they present it to their own public but promoting fascism & authoritarianism in order to maintain economic interests. Guatemala & El Salvador are just a few of their many victims. Cuba arguably is the result of when the US pushed too far and the population retalitated in self defence. The US should be held accountable for these crimes just as the British should be for their involvement in Iran (alongside the US), the fire bombings of Dresden, the displacement of the people of the Chagos Islands and their treatment of enslaved persons.

As someone who's country also once suffered from US-backed oligarchs. I'm sorry, and i'm glad of today. Let us pick up the pieces & move to a peaceful future.

I'm from El Salvador. It's sad to see how lots of people including very young people gave their lives because they thought they were fighting for a cause like the people from radio Venceremos. FMLN became a political party after the war, as they said in the video, and they came to power in 2009 but nothing changed. If anything, poverty and violence got worst. The authorities of the party who claimed to fight for the poor and against injustice, betrayed all of those who fought and died for a better country. They only got rich and never really cared about the people.

Absolute Lies! I dont belive you are Salvadorian. Noone from Salvador would speak of recent times without the context of US political and economic persecution that continues to this day. It's a perfect example of how even in Defeart USA vibdictiveness knows no bounds. E.S. cannot rebuild economically because USA has sanctioned their economy. Preventing all attempts are rebulding and creating a fairer economy and society. It's the same as Cuba. If countries "chose the wrong party" to lead them, USA will crush you with sanctions and economic bloackades.

I do. But im in the minority. The problem is our government actively tries to obscure the reality of our actions through weak justifications about maintaining freedom and democracy. The average american imperial indoctrinee eats it up and lives life believing that everything our country does is justified. As someone who has broken free of that indoctrination, seeing so many of my fellow people still under its spell is depressing.

"Pollinating a more just future." That is such a beautiful way to describe those constant efforts of remembrance. It won't be for nothing. As an American, thank you for sharing this story. I want my people to pursue justice too.

The only Conspiracy Theory I believe in: Joe Strummer wrote “Radio Clash” with Radio Venceremos in mind (the same year they started broadcasting) but were made to change it. Strummer was very much interested in Central American Geopolitics having released “Sandinista” the year prior. The original version of “Radio Clash” had the words “This is Radio Clash resuming all transmissions, beaming from the mountain tops, using aural ammunition”. The album and single release versions were changed, and the song title also changed to “This Is Radio Clash” (look it up).

Unfortunately in the Philippines, the former dictatorial regime that also caused unspoken massacres back in the 70's and 80's had been brought back into the country's government.

And one would think that americans would know more of these kinds of stories, and the ones that took place throughout ALL of latin america in the 70s, but their government, in its ever silencing iron fist, does not let history run freely

This made me cry during dinner. I really can't imagine the atrocities of humans to start wealthy and abuse other people and species. American officials involved in this should be punished and declared war criminals and this should be taught in schools so children know about the responsibility that comes with power. Even if the officials are dead, it gives justice to the survivors of the massacres and children of survivors who would have heard about this blood curdling horrors.

My mother to this tells me stories of the violence she witnessed as a young girl, these crimes are not forgotten by the Salvadorean people
