Ugandan Rights Activist: U.S. Conservatives Exported Anti-LGBTQ Hate That Led to "Kill the Gays" Law

We go to Kampala, Uganda, to discuss the impact of one of the most draconian anti-LGBTQ laws in the world, just signed by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. The new law makes same-sex relationships punishable by life imprisonment. Some LGBTQ people could receive the death sentence. Homophobia in Uganda is heavily influenced by American evangelists, who function as “exporters of hate,” notes Pepe Onziema, a Ugandan human rights activist, causing LGBTQ Ugandans to “end up as collateral damage.”

This law is crazy. But why does the US have such a hard on for this law in Uganda? What about similar laws that have long existed in Saudi Arabia and many other 'friends' of America in the Middle East? Why the double standard? Oh wait Uganda can be told what to do but Saudi Arabia can't. If you are going to fight for one, then fight for all, or this just amounts to selective outrage.

While it is true that international relations can sometimes be complex and appear inconsistent, it's important to recognize that human rights issues should be consistently addressed and evaluated regardless of a country's economic or political ties. Criticism and scrutiny of human rights abuses should not be influenced by economic considerations. The acceptability of a country's laws and actions cannot solely be determined by its economic associations or the currency it uses. Human rights are universal principles that should be upheld and protected regardless of geopolitical or economic interests. It is essential for the international community to consistently condemn and address human rights violations wherever they occur, including in Saudi Arabia or any other country. Sanctions and diplomatic measures should be taken based on principles of human rights, justice, and the well-being of individuals. Engaging in constructive dialogue, promoting human rights, and holding nations accountable for their actions are critical steps towards fostering a more just and equitable world. It's important for individuals and organizations to advocate for consistent standards and work towards the protection and promotion of human rights globally. Rather than focusing solely on perceived hypocrisy, it is more productive to encourage open discussions and actions that lead to positive change and the protection of human rights worldwide. Saudi Arabia should be pressured too and America's stance is indeed hypocritical. That doesn't make this law anymore just, however.

I keep hearing the western government needs to put pressure on African countries, are we living in the colonial era? Is Africa truly independent beyond external control? If not, let us know so we can shade our very last drop of blood to defend her sovereignty if need be. I most admit we have challenges that we Africans need to sit amongst ourselves and find a solution that can be acceptable as a just one for both parties but to disregard her sovereignty and whip her into submission is unacceptable. Given our history with the west, we have every right to cross examine anything that comes from the west and to Pepe Enzima you need to know that Africa is not a subordinate to the western world with you talking that way will even turn sympathizers against your struggles

Is Africa truly independent beyond external control - No, you have requested aid and received it with some conditions. This is how external politics works. If you want to do "whatever you like" you cannot ask for help with infrastructure, health, trade or other forms or aid or collaboration. This will lead to isolation and then Uganda will become like North Korea. You can do what you like, but so can other countries.

These evangelicals that you talk about are not even enough to mobilise the whole of Kampala(Uganda's capital), let alone the whole country. It never crossed your minds that maybe homosexuality is a norm that all the different cultures in Uganda have always had a hostility towards. 20 million usd !!! Is that an amount that you think can make a whole nation forget their cultures and norms. Do you really think Uganda is that poor😂. As a matter of fact, more than 100m usd has been spent by the US organisations to spread the homosexuality agenda in the country, and yet for some reason the 20m usd has more influence !!?😂...Please make this make sense......In conclusion, the evangelicals are insignificant. SO will you say that these evangelicals went to the Arab the countries with 20 million and funded the stricter anti homosexuality laws there as well?? This hypocrisy is laughable .....when it comes to the Arabs, you people are more than willing to respect their culture, but when it comes to the Ugandans, "nooo, it cant be their need to protect and preserve culture, it has to be the measly 20m usd and the insignificant mobilisation done by the evangelicals who have never been seen in most parts of the country".......Hypocrites

This hypocrisy is laughable .....when it comes to the Arabs, you people are more than willing to respect their culture, but when it comes to the Ugandans, "nooo, it cant be their need to protect and preserve culture, it has to be the measly 20m usd and the insignificant mobilisation done by the evangelicals who have never been seen in most parts of the country"......

Trump created a pact that had most countries that previously had the death penalty for homosexuality outlawed, which is a DIRECT contradiction to the title of this video. The former US president made several countries (many of them Islamic) ban the death penalty as well as capital punishment (like lashes or other forms of torture) for homosexuality. As a result of this pact created by Trump, some of these countries also decriminalised homosexuality, or at least banned the imprisonment of homosexuals for the crime of their sexuality. Trump did this in exchange for very favourable trade deals (otherwise they would never have been tempted to accept such a deal because either their strict Islamic or strict Christian beliefs make them immensely homophobic). You can see Trump being given the pride rainbow flag as a thank you for this by people in the LGBTQ community, and he waves it with a smile. I don't agree with the agenda, but LBBTQ people absolutely have the right to exist and to live just as anyone else does. I just don't agree with the indoctrination of children into this ideology, and I STRONGLY oppose drag queen and transgender strippers for children as well as puberty blockers and irreversible transgender surgery for underage people. I also STRONGLY disagree with changing paedophiles to MAPS (Minor Attracted People), and for having them accepted into the LGBTQ community. It is disgusting and evil beyond belief, and should never be accepted anywhere.

You can't make anybody gay, and even if you completely prevent your child from ever learning or hearing anything about the issue they still just might turn out to be gay. If you're worried about pedophilia as we all should be I recommend keeping a keen eye on the churches, youth groups and YOUR OWN IMMEDIATE SURROUNDINGS where the overwhelming majority of these crimes take place.

@@olivka7560 If you have any African friends that know their local language, ask them what a gay man is called in their local language. Then, ask them for the direct translation of that word. You will quickly realise how disgusted Africans have always been by homosexuality. Also, African societies have always been community oriented. Which is why you here phrases like; "It takes a village to raise a child"(This is an African proverb if you didn't know). So how can you say that a community that labels gay men with terms that express disgust had a relaxed attitude towards the sexual acts of these same people. When you talk about Africans minding their own business, that is how I know you haven't been in an African family setting before. Anyone that was raised by African parents and is part of an African family knows that is far from the truth. This individuality mindset is a modern concept(And we all know where "modernity" comes from). In conclusion, if you want to understand the attitude that a culture has towards a topic, find out how they refer to it in their local language. In most African tribes, a gay man is referred to as a weak man, a mad man, or even an outcast. So how can you say that is a relaxed attitude towards homosexuality. How can you call that openness. Instead of respecting our cultures and norms, you people have now resorted to dictating and altering what our cultures were and weren't open to. In other words, rewriting our history to be in a way that soothes your minds. Let me simplify this: If a muslim says he doesn't eat pork, respect that fact and understand that that is the norm of that religion/culture.

They always hit on you when you ignore them completely and they don’t understand word no. This is my experience. Every African man I know cheated on his gf and they usually end up having many kids of different women. I had friends who itch African boyfriends and they suggested sex -all of them, saying that my friend will not know. Two just stared showing their penis, having wives. So this is what is our experience. Is this your culture? I literally do not one black man who was faithful, not even one. Even gynecologists where I lived suggested to be careful because many girls got illnesses and black men don’t want to put condone. So do not tell me about this conservative Christian culture pretending that African culture is about traditional values. Church changed a lot in a culture but Africans were always very sexual expressive and original African culture did not discriminate on sex as sex was one of the basic pleasures. It is in the genes. Even Afro Americans are much more sexually active and have harder time resisting when girls flirt. No matter if they have wives or pregnant wives. You do not understand the impact church had on culture and it had in good direction. But now you cherry pick. Africans when it comes to their actual behaviour are not conservative at all. They just talk now as preachers as this was a culture of preaching about morality for decades.

Most of the Gay Ugandans interviewed are in the Western countries like KWAGALA, Do you know why.... Because Culturely, even before the LAW / ACT discussed..., UGANDA is not for GAYS. BIDEN may marry a man if he so wishes. Never seen a US senator or member of the assembly who publically is GAY or his publically declared he or she is.... There are States in the US that are ANTI - GAY, please clean you house first. You deal with countries in the Arab Sovereignity that have worser LAWS or ACTS. You do not condemn or Sanction them because they can survive without US - EU Aid. I think it is time Uganda and Africa works to Self sufficiency and stop basing on US - EU dictatorial AID. We need AID that values our CULTURE and CUSTOMS. No wonder, they keep asking why CHINA's Influence on AFRICA and the World generally is rising. They value PARTNERSHIP but US values their own INTERESTS... Their INTERESTS have gone a long way in killing and destroying other sovereign nations like LIBYA, IRAQ etc and no International BODIES have like UN have come out to condemn or call for legal actions on BUSH or other US leaders who have violated the first Universal Human Right - right to life.
