UFC 247 recap: Jon Jones barely survives Dominick Reyes, retains title | ESPN MMA

Спорт

ESPN MMA's Ariel Helwani and Brett Okamoto give a detailed recap on UFC 247, including whether the title should have gone to Dominick Reyes after a dominant performance vs. Jon Jones. Okamoto and Helwani discuss if a rematch is in the future, a potential bout between Jones and middleweight champion Israel Adesanya, and the future for women's flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.

Sadly a lot of people think this way. It is emotional... in other sports, if you sprint faster than the other person by even a fraction of a second, you win... it doesn't matter if you were faster for most of the race... in basketball if one team scores 112 and the other 111, but the 111 team did a great job... it doesn't matter... but in fighting for some reason... people talk about "championship rounds meaning more".

This fight showed how much the scoring system just doesn't work. Even though I can see Reyes taking the first 3 rounds, I still feel like Jon won that fight because of the strong finish. How can a round that's edged out be worth the same amount as a clear dominant round? I also feel like the championship rounds should be weighed more heavily in a championship fight. Reyes edges the first 3 rds and Jon takes over and shows why he's champ in the last 2, but we give Reyes the belt? It just wouldn't feel right. They absolutely need to change things.

@Johnny Crustacean I feel like with the strikes that marginally close, then you have to go to the next criteria which is grappling and then aggression and octagon control. That's another problem with the scoring. It's too open to interpretation. Aggression is only supposed to count when the first 2 criteria is equal, but how equal? Some would say numerically equal, but the flaw in that is not every strike is equally effective. Either way, I really hope they move on from the boxing system and come up with something better.

Not how it works, at all. Total strikes for the entire fight aren't relevant, as you could out strike your opponent 2 to 1 in 2 10-9 rounds and still lose. Now that doesn't say anything about the fact that statistically, in strikes Reyes out struck him in 1 2 and 3, but strikes aren't the only factor.

@@sergiofloresivan you are correct, it's the 2nd round that was closer. • @AndrewDavis5

At first I also thought that Reyes almost clearly won Round 2. However, I've just reviewed the fight closely, and from what I see, Rd 2 was actually the most significant round to pay attention to. (Reyes did better in Rd 3 than he did in 2) In Round 2, Reyes definitely put the "scare" on Jon Jones, making a lot of vicious swings at Jones especially against the cage. However, watch closely, and you'll see that Jon slipped mostly all of them, and Reyes began to tire 2 mins into that round (3:50 onward), where Jones then controlled the pace, having Reyes shuffling backward for the rest of that round, and also for most of the remainder of the fight. I believe because we don't expect to see Jones in such a scary position against a contender, Rd 2 appeared to look "more impressive" of Reyes than it really was. However in actuality, Reyes barely landed anything in that decisive Rd #2. For the least he (Reyes) "Definitely" did not "put a beating" on Jones in Rnd #2, and I can see the argument for that round to be awarded to either side.

@@AndrewDavis5 - I would definitely have to say that I was a bit surprised with Jones. He's one of the most active (LHW) fighters, when it comes to constantly moving punching, kicking and etc. This is the reason he's been dominating for years. But this fight, there were times that he was just not doing enough. Which at times during the fight gave Reyes the motivation to be more active. Normally Jones is doing so much more to the other fighter to disrupt their game plan and slow down there striking significantly. (All that said, I could see that this fight could have gone either way)
