🎮 UE4/UE5 Multiplayer - Part 3: Network Relevancy

📹 Part 3 of our replication tutorial series covers a very important concept that makes massive-world multiplayer games possible - Network Relevancy. We learn how Unreal Engine handles Replication by using Network Relevancy to determine whether the actor should be replicated to a client or not.

I'm sure everyone else on here is gonna be like great vid, I learned so much, etc. But, the truth is my head is swimming in confusion. I'll need some time to go back and rewatch this over and over again until all this replication stuff becomes relevant to me. I am grateful though you put this in visual form. I've been working with replication for over two years on my game, and have bashed my head against just about every conceivable problem with it. Came to watch this as a refresher after some time away from net stuff and maybe learn some new tricks, and was not disappointed. Definitely the best explained and by far the most entertaining series I've seen on the subject. It's like an animated and hilarious version of Cedric's excellent network compendium. Thanks for making it, and please keep up the great work! Looking forward to part 4.

Thanks Lotus! This was very encouraging to read 😊 I've felt your pain and have seen so many people pivot to single player games simply because they couldn't wrap their head around replication. I'm a huge fan of Cedric's compendium and was bummed that it wasn't 10x longer. Working on part 4 as we speak. Thanks again for your awesome comment and for watching - hopefully we can spare your poor keyboards from being bashed from now on 😉

@@brynertoma Yup, some days making something single player is mighty tempting! I'm committed though. Looking forward to seeing how you implement repnotify yourself. I have to use it everywhere in my game (large scale open world multiplayer), mostly because it's the only way to deal with relevancy for events that happened in the past, but whose results are newly relevant to an arriving player. The basics of making it work aren't difficult, but when you have events that result in rapid toggles of states (picked up/dropped/picked up items etc) things can get very wonky very fast, and setting those properties to reliable causes more problems than it solves. I find in many cases where a repnotify has to be used for an object state change that can be toggled, it's necessary to put timer lockouts of at least two seconds duration before the state is allowed to change again. They can happen so fast that the order they are transferred over the net can get badly out of sync, with or without lag. It doesn't make for the snappiest gameplay, but a little forced lag is better than bugs. Fun stuff eh!

@@brynertoma Sorry i deleted that project, it was just a test. Im a bit more advanced in Multiplayer stuff now but i havent worked on my current project for 2-3 months now, kinda sad tbh. Currently studying to become an Game Designer/Artist. So not much time to work on my project. Btw can i ask someting? So ive heard that when i set up a Multiplayer session Game that allows one Client to become Host ( you may have seen this in small Shooter games). Should i use the Steam Multiplayer Plug In? Someone said that there is a problem that a regular Router may not accept incoming "clients". But the Steam Multiplayer Plug in will take care of that problem. Any thougths on that? I actually dont wanna set up something like that but a friend wants to. My Game hopefully works with a dedicated server and maybe i have to set up something like that to accept incoming requests. Im not that far yet, didnt read much about it. Oh and btw im still a bit confused about the Rep Notify+Multicast, so far everything works without the combination. Im working on an mmorpg, everything surprisingly works fine. I know that my account management system kinda sucks, its just a struct with password, accountname, names, classes. Discord: Kippe #5061

That’s one way of doing it yes, since you have to make sure the router is forwarding port 7777 otherwise. If your friend uses dedicated servers it’s non problem but if he wants players to host, yes, he’ll have to handle it using sessions. Have you tested your multiplayer rigorously? Like using multiple clients, making sure they’re not relevant to each other and then doing something and making them relevant again to see if things sync up properly. You can’t test having 2 players near each other and then depend on multicast to tell other clients what a certain client is doing. RepNotify comes in when relevancy is part of the picture so make sure your tests include clients becoming irrelevant / relevant to each other. Would love to see what you’re working on by the way. Feel free to join and share your work in the flex channel! Your friend is more than welcome too 😊 discord.gg/GGeMXh7

You are right, sometimes I get too excited and go way too fast. I apologize. I'm going to try and pace a bit better. In the meantime 0.75x speed might help a little bit 😊 Thank you for the kind comment / feedback, Ibraheem! May I ask where you're from?
