Uconnect Swap From 5" to 8.4"

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The little 5 inch infotainment screen on my 2015 Dodge Charger is pretty embarrassing. The upgrade to a larger 8.4 inch screen is expensive and risky as some folks say it will not work properly.

    At this point all other videos on KZread of this upgrade need to be deleted! This video is hands down the best one ever to the point and not anything over I installed my own radio in my car and I am a woman and not too technical on radio’s after riding around for hours looking for someone to install it for me, I was turned away and told it wouldn’t work in my car even the dealership told me it won’t work 😩 well after this video I installed myself and it works perfectly thank you so much 😊 keep up the good work

    That Charger is gorgeous and I am so happy for you that you were able to finally get one that is in remarkably great condition. The touch screen upgrade was a no brainier to bring that car up to another level. You absolutely definitely should keep this Charger around for a good long time. Might not get another one this nice from the auction. Wishing you and your family the Merriest Christmas. Stay safe and healthy. God Bless You and Your Family. Your a lucky guy🥰

    That’s great! Gotta love how cars typically only use wiring system. I remember “upgrading” my base model 1979 Datsun 210 with junkyard parts that all just plugged in. I was able to just plug in an ashtray light and other deluxe options. My car didn’t even have arm rests, just a plastic door pull. But the mounting holes with plastic nuts were in place on the door metal - I just had to poke through the vinyl on the door card. That was a solid upgrade to your new fun ride! Happy holidays from Maryland

Being an old school guy, I prefer good old fashioned knobs buttons and switches I can operate by feel without taking my eyes off the road. I got my 15' Pursuit with around 93k miles and it was in great shape just needed some tlc and a good detail. I was also considering an awd model but being that i'm a mechanic myself thought about all the extra stuff on it that could break and just went with a rwd since all i have to worry about is rainy weather in my area. If you do end up getting one definitely look into the idle hours and make sure it doesn't have any loud lifter ticking since these things are notorious with cam and lifter failure issues. Luckily my unit still had a few months left on powertrain warranty when i got it and dealer fixed the issue for me. Good luck with your search.

    If you go back to the dealer parts dept. and give them the VIN from the auto that the radio came out of they could tell you exactly what model and year it was. The reason I said you should go to the dealer is because when you give them the Charger VIN they will be able to run off a complete list of all factory equipment and options and then you will know exactly what your car has except for anything the cops changed which I would guess is nothing! The list for my 2016 Challenger RT was about 6 pages.

    Oh, I didn't know the Charger's and 300's were on the same line. Funny thing, years ago I was at the old Chrysler Newark, DE assembly plant back when they were still making cars. While inside I was looking at some old assembly photos and at least in the 1950's that plant had every available MOPAR brand all rolling down the very same line. There were Imperials, Plymouths, Dodges and Chryslers all coming down. It surprised me only because I always thought those assembly lines were dedicated to one particular brand and one model only.

How would the back up camera work is the original stereo didn’t have a back up camera?

    This has become a real challenge. I did get an RF4 radio. Odometer was flashing, volume control didn't work, rear speakers only, no balance, no fade. Went to two Chrysler dealers. First told me it was a VIN mismatch, and there was nothing they could do. Charged me $100. Didn't even stop the odometer from flashing. Second just agreed with the first and declined to look at it. I hit "restore factory defaults" and all the radio features came back. I thought I had it licked, except for the odometer. Not exactly. Every time I shut off the car it reverts back to the way it was, and I have to restore to factory defaults again. I'm not impressed with the dealers. If I can do more than them by pressing one button, I think they should be capable of synching it so it works properly.

    Looks great, I want to do this to my 2016 Base challenger SXT. The only thing I’ve read is that the dealer’s cannot perform software updates once you make the change to the 8.4, due to the fact that the updates are done using the VIN of the car. Did you happend to come across that too in your reading? Also, was the part sourced thru a local junkyard? Or one of those online Ebay junkyards?

  • @hullinger

    @hullinger

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks man for checking out my U-connect video. I was super hesitant to buy that junk yard 8.4" because of exactly what you said about upgrades AND about some type of compatibility issue with the wiring. Believe me, there's no issue, as long as you stick with the same model year U-connect as your car. There were wiring changes, I think in either 2016 or 2017 that makes older 8.4" incompatible. Regarding the software updated, that was a cinch. You will need the VIN of the donor car that the new 8.4" came out of. With that, the FCA website allows you to enter that VIN and get the latest software. You download that onto a memory stick than plug that into your car. Easy peasy.

    Those connectors on the back are Fakras. The blue, white, pink, etc. The blue is for straight GPS, and the pink on the new one is for GPS and telematics (aka the car phoning home via cell). My VW had a double Fakra connector running to the telematics module that I used an adapter on to get to my Motorola radio. If you want to get GPS on that head unit, get a Fakra Z male to female cable. Z is the neutral keying, so it will fit in any Fakra connector. You might have to check which antenna goes where though, I saw 2 of those connectors and I think one might be purple which corresponds to GSM cell antenna, but I can't tell from the color on the video. But pink is GPS for certain. You should be able to adapt that pretty easily. And I think you aren't getting the apps because the screen can't E.T. phone home since it doesn't have a GSM cell antenna. I wouldn't be surprised if they came alive when you added an antenna to it. Also, not sure if the FCAs do this too, but my car will throw a fault code when my telematics antennas are unplugged. It can sense the open circuit and knows to just stop and throw a code so the service tech can look at it. Granted, this is through VCDS and not the generic OBD scan tool, but just an FYI in case you get some sort of radio fault code at the dealer/service shop.

    @@hullinger Take a look at this doc, it mentions all the different color Fakras and what they correspond to: www.rosenberger.com/0_documents/de/codes/codes_coding_auto_fakra.pdf. The GPS connector I can nearly guarantee you will *just work* regardless if it's pink or blue, unless FCA pulled some wonky business it will just be a phantom-powered antenna. Like I mentioned, I stole the GPS line off of the telematics in my car and hooked it directly into my MotoTRBO radio. Even though the radio has a SMA connector and is a business band radio it is still able to get a GPS fix using the normal shark fin antenna built into my car. GPS antennas at the end of the day are the same thing regardless of the connector on the end. The GSM antenna may be a little more complicated, I cannot speak to how they are set up on FCA vehicles but on mine I think it's remote/phantom powered - been a few months though, my brain's a bit foggy. I would recommend looking at other vehicles using that same model of infotainment and seeing if you can snag the shark fin off of the host vehicle to do some testing with. Or if you can look at a service manual it might be in there - again I cannot speak to how FCA does things but that's how I was able to figure out which one of my coax lines was for GPS and which was for GSM. Edit: I take it back, it looks like the yellow connector is GPS (for whatever reason). Just goes to show you always need to check the manual and never assume (doh). Also found this on the interwebs, might be of use to you in your endeavors perception.fcaperformanceinstitute.com/FCARepository_con/topiccontent/1588106484/0621908.pdf
