They did for a while. He didn't score the last 7 minutes of the first half. He scored 8 or 10 after the game was over, and Karaban was guarding him for some of those. Clingan played him well enough, considering that they gave him no help.

UCONN gave Edey his dinks so they could stop the rest and it worked...1 in only 7 Purdue 3 point attempts tells that story.

They “handled” him is just plain dumb. The gameplan was VERY simple. It was the “we can’t stop him but we will put someone on him to compete and stay home so no one else gets a rhythm”. That’s exactly what happened. Sometimes it works sometimes it fails miserably. Still have to top your hats to UConn. Having an older group probably helped them stay disciplined enough not to over commit on the help defense.

It wasn't simply UCONN can't stop Edey but they'd rather give him 2's than have him pass off for 3's outside. Purdue had only 7 3-point attempts and hit only 1.

I don't know if a guy scoring more than half his team points is handled. But their strategy was to handle the other players

Edey was not handled. The rest of the team was suppressed. Smith scored about average points and the rest did not do much. Also Hurley should have been given several technicals. He has walked on the floor several times. He even pushed his player forward from the side line. Any other coach would have been Teed.

UConn’s strategy was to let Edey eat, and contain everyone else. He scored a very impressive 37 pts, but ~10 of his 21 second half points were in garbage time against Karaban (a forward) when the game was already decided. Importantly, UConn couldn’t defend him tightly due to quick and early foul trouble with their bigs (Clingan 4, Samson fouled out). If the refs had just let UConn play with their normal level of physicality, Edey would’ve struggled to put up those numbers.
