João Paulo Lopes Batista had money on this game? (I know this comment is from 3 years ago but with Batista now an assistant coach and someone I've shook hands with I feel compelled) ... when Gonzaga lost to Wyoming in 2002 it seemed at the end of the game everyone but Dan Dickau didn't want the ball in their hands and were panicking. At the end of this game, Morrison and Batista both at least didn't treat the basketball like a hot potato. And when this game happened, unlike 3 years ago, sports betting was a lot more difficult. I don't think so.

You can't blame it all on one player. The whole Bruin defense was designed to destroy Morrison. The refs didn't help by not calling a 100% foul call on Batista. This was one of my greatest early childhood sports memories. I was 6 years old and my parents put me to bed early because they said the game was over. Then 20 minutes later they came rushing in and said "quick come watch the last minute!". It was insanely exciting. Now I'm a senior at UCLA and can't wait for today's game. I have to say though, looking back it's sad watching Morrison like that at the end. Really was heartbreak city.

I was a senior at UCLA during this 2006 NCAA run to the championship game. The first of Ben Howlands 3 straight trips to the final four. The atmosphere around campus was so cool to experience and was glad that they could make a run before I graduated. You could hear screams and yells all over Westwood after this game. Felt bad for this year’s team but it brought back memories of how fun it is to see your team go on a run like that. Hopefully this is like 2006, and is just the start of another strong era in UCLA basketball.

Too much was made of the Morrison crying incident near the end of the game. What should be talked about more is the fact that this was a great basketball game between the 2 best programs on the west coast at the time. They should've been doing home and home series at the time. This game also showed that Gonzaga, when they wanted to play defense, could actually do so. Problem is, UCLA's D under Howland was super elite. The other problem was Batista was fouled on the play at the end of the game when the ball was "stolen" from him. A buddy of mine was right in front of the play, and he could hear the SLAP on JP's arm. It was a 100% foul.Doesn't mean GU would've won the game if the foul was called. What's also interesting is that Jordan Farmar was A LOT closer to picking Gonzaga than many people think. If Howland hadn't taken the UCLA job, $100 bet that Farmar chooses Gonzaga. UCLA wasn't even a factor until Jordan's long lost dad got into the picture.

Zaga has an interesting history. They had a couple great players before the late 1990s, Frank Burgess who led the nation in scoring and John Stockton who would go onto to be a Hall of Famer. I would argue that Morrison was the best player in Zaga history and one of the greatest college players of all time. However, the beginning of Zaga's dominance doesn't start with him, but Mark Few. In his first year as a coach, Few led Zaga to it's first tournament win, round of 32 appearance, Sweet 16, and Elite Eight. Matt Santangelo, Casey Calvary, and Dan Dickau formed a dynamic Big 3 for Zaga in 2000 and they made another Sweet 16 run with those players. Few has gone on to reach 2 national championship games, 2 final fours, 6 Elite Eights, and 13 Sweet 16s since 1999 with Zaga. He's really the guy who set up Zaga to become the best mid-major basketball program of all time.
