I chose this for our wedding entrance song when we got married in Sweden this year. My husband is English and I am a Swede. He had no clue abut the song and we had him in tears! Being a true London boy that is a BIG thing :)

it's good for anything that's low and downtrodden. The visual being that of a beautiful swing that comes down really low, so that you can get on, before it swings all the way back up to heaven.
Damn this makes me miss my rugby! What a sport. God bless England

its England rugby theme song because a group of school boys sang it at a England game in the 70's after England scored and everyone joined in. Since then its just become tradition. Seriously chill out since when did sports songs have anything to do with their sports/teams. Its all about tradition. Personally I love nothing more than singing this to my welsh flatmates when we beat them!

My mom told me that when she sang this song to me as a baby I would always start crying. When she told me that as a small child, I thought that was silly and couldn't see why I would do that. Then, I got old enough to understand what the lyrics mean. Sweet Jesus. It's about someone dying and going to the afterlife. I cried. Funny how things come full circle like that.

On 18th March 1988 a group of students from the Douai team attended They delivered this with particular vigour when wing Chris Oti ran in his first try for England. Inspired by the response amusement of the spectators immediately around them the students struck up with added gusto as Chris Oti scored a second try. By the time the player, now on a roll, scored his try-hat trick the chorus reached such a crescendo that, the whole of the England supporters joined in and an anthem was born.

The song became associated with the England Rugby team in particular following a victory over Ireland in 1988 after a poor run of form. Chris Oti, a black player making his debut at Twickenham scored 3 tries to help England win the match. A group of the crowd then started singing the gospel hymn and then large sections of the crowd joined in. It remains a popular theme with England and following the 2003 Rugby World cup victory the plane that took them home was call signed "Sweet Chariot."

You are correct. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot was composed by Wallis Willis , a one-time slave of the Choctaw Native Americans in the old Indian Territory, around 1862. He was inspired by the Red River which reminded him of the Jordan River and of the Prophet Elijah being taken to heaven by a chariot.
