The song was written in Ethiopia where the streets realy don´t have names or didn´t have in that time and he was there with his wife helping with the big famine because Europe had sent there its vegetable and so on and they didn´t know how to eat it. So Bono and his wife taught them this and some other things. www.worldvision.org/hunger-news-stories/30-years-ago-u2-bono-visited-ethiopia

You are correct in that Bono (the lead singer) was calling out to someone. His father, Bob, passed a few days before their string of concerts at Slane Castle. In fact, he was buried the day before the first show. This is why this show has particular meaning for the band and their fans. I recommend "Kite" from the same show. Great reactions BTW.

Such a good gig. Bono sheds a tear at the end of kite. I think bono and his father had a strained relationship, they drifted apart when Bono’s mum died. Bono was only 14 I think. He wrote ‘I will follow’ which everyone thinks is a real punk rock song, it’s actually a suicidal song about bono wanted to follow his mum into death.

My favorite U2 song. I remember they performed this in the Super Bowl halftime show after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. The song is about the Protestant (Church of England) / Catholic divisions in Northern Ireland. While recording this album ("The Joshua Tree") the studio engineer became so frustrated that he almost erased this song before it was finished, because they had spent a week trying to get it right. What a shame if he had, as this is one of their most iconic songs.

Bob was his father. Who had recently passed. The singer’s name is Paul Hewson, but he goes by Bono (pronounced BAH-no). The guitarist is David Evans, but even his mother calls him The Edge. U2 have been a band since September 25, 1976 (coincidentally the day I was born). They were schoolmates. Their first album came out in 1980. They’ve won a ton of grammies and have been inducted in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. They’re from Dublin, Ireland. This show was from the “Elevation” tour in 2000-2001. The venue, Slane Castle, is in Ireland. So it was basically a hometown crowd but they are a really huge band. I’ve seen them live six times. It’s always a great show. That catwalk was in the shape of a heart. It was part of the Elevation Tour stage. The band’s name has no real meaning and the band actually hates it. They were teenagers when they picked it and now they’re 60ish and they’re stuck with it. 😂 Four guys making music together for 44 years. No breakups, no lineup changes, nothing. Same four guys. Bono says that being in U2 is like a marriage between four men. It’s hard work and there’s fights and compromises but it’s always rewarding. They released their fourteenth studio album a couple years ago.

it's basically impossible to do justice to their catalog with a few recommendations. I can name no less than 40 songs worthy of attention but...well... Anyway, by album name- War: Young U2 just hit it big - "Sunday Bloody Sunday" (about real life events during The Troubles in Northern Ireland) The Unforgettable Fire: Next album - The one the play on the radio is Pride, about MLK, but the real gem is "Bad" about a friend who died of a drug overdose Joshua Tree: considered the best album if their 80's work, "With or Without You" and "I Still haven't Found What I'm Looking For" are both powerful Rattle & Hum: like the previous album, so much goodness, but for a change of pace how about "Angel of Harlem" (about Billie Holiday and her world) Achtung Baby: many call this their very best album, "One" is maybe the best song ever but "Until the End of the World" (at least) is also remarkable (skipping a couple of lesser albums) All That You Can't Leave Behind: my personal fave here is "Walk On" but "Beautiful Day" and "Stuck in a Moment" are both excellent That's 10 so I'll stop except one other thing you might find interesting - there's a video out there of a live performance of "Miss Sarajevo" with Luciano Pavarotti that's pretty great.

Yikes! Skipping Zooropa and POP! sigh. All That You Can't leave... Is my least favorite album, ok, second least. POP and Zooropa are both outstanding. I would say, go and listen again without any preconceived notions. POP is actually one of their more political albums (Staring at the Sun, Please) Gone is a classic, Do You Feel Loved is just flat out amazing, Wake up Dead man, about doubting one's faith. And Zooropa is just intensely deep and profoundly creative. Really the greatest creative time for the band 91-97.

So Bono is a born again Christian. He was moved while touring Africa that some places had no street names. He lamented how the name of the street that you live on tells people where you stand in society. The streets become literal racial divides in some cities. When I lived in NYC, we were told that 100th street was the line. That to go any farther meant to get into bad neighborhoods. Truth be told, some of my best friends lived well into the 120s and my parents would have flipped if they had known I went up that far to see my friends. He also references heaven in the song as a place where the streets have no names. There is no division or class system in heaven, only unity for all believers. He talked about this at a concert one time and said that He cannot wait to see the banquet in heaven with people of all nationalities sitting together in harmony. I think this is why so many people want that so badly in our world today, it just feels like a glimpse into heaven. I find great hope in that one day something as silly as skin color will no longer divide people. And I think it is why racism feels so gross, it feels like running the opposite way of the direction that we are all supposed to be headed in. Anyway that is my two cents and some insight into Bono.

U2 is an amazing band who have always been deeply political and socially conscious on inclusion, equal rights, climate, etc etc. Bono believes music can tear down the walls and tear off the labels that divide us. This song is about living in a world where there is no division...A place Where The Streets Have No Name. Pretty powerful!

They had come up with a shortlist of six names. U2 was the name they hated the least. U2 comes from the U-2 spy plane which was in the news a lot around that time period. My favorite band in the world. I love all kinds of music but I have seen U2 dozens of times and they are my favorite live band. They always put on amazing shows. Yes, he was crying out for his father who passed away prior to this show, maybe a week or more before. Great reaction, thank you for entertaining us during these Crazy times. 😁

The stage was Heart shaped. Bob was his dad who passed away a few days earlier. The song was about the time he spent in Africa. U2 was a part of LIVE AID for africa in 85. It also has a feel of Heaven. He used the part of no sorrow or pain to the version of this song.

I saw U2 on this tour and 2 others. Absolutely incredible every time. Others have already explained about this song, so I will just request “Bad” from their Live Aid set. Also “Love Rescue Me” from their groundbreaking 1988 concert film “Rattle and Hum.” And “Pride.” I’ll resist going on & on! Just want to add that I love that pink in the background of your room. It really makes you glow even more than usual! 💕

THIS! This is my absolute favorite U2 song ever and I am a big fan for nearly 30 years now. This concert is a only U2 concert that means all people are just there for them. Bono's dad past away directly before this concert, you can see it in his passion while singing and in the love the fan's gave back to him . The best Version of this song for me, brings me to tears and gives me chills every time I see it. You should also check out a version of the U2 songs "Bad" and "Pride" if you have the time. Intense songs with great lyriks.

Songs I recommend Sunday Bloody Sunday (very relevant to today) With or Without You Bullet the Blue Sky (Live from Rattle & Hum) One Mysterious Ways In the Name of Love (MLK song) Have fun!

A U2 concert isn't just a gig, it's a communion with an energy that passes through the crowd which you can only feel, you can't describe it. I'm a non-believer, but it is a spiritual experience and Bono is both a preacher and a shaman. The song is also technically quite interesting as it goes through multiple time signature shifts, and The Edge was a pioneer of the echo and effects he uses.

I saw U2 when they were an opening act. I saw them at Red Rocks (awesome video) and 3 more times. TRUE STORY! We were waiting in line to buy their tickets for A St Patrick's day show in Denver and the computers crashed and we had been waiting for hours already. So you know what they did? They bought pizza for everybody in line it was courtesy of them. Rockstars don't do that but U2 does. My favorite Pride In The Name of Love. It's dedicated to Martin Luther King. I also love The Unforgettable Fire.

I've had the pleasure of seeing U2 five times over the years, and sometimes Bono would hit just one note that was worth the price of admission. Bono had just lost his father a few days before this concert, and yes, he was singing from the bottom of his soul for his father.

Love "Joshua Tree". Sometimes, mostly in deep Winter, just let that album run. Masterpiece! If this is the live rooftop show in Los Angeles - I nearly went. Except I know downtown L.A. well, and was NOT about to get in that traffic! God bless KTLA for playing it live on the TV! (No, this is an actual show. Trip out and watch the screw-up-L.A.-on-a-Friday video, too, just for fun!)
