    I second this. Epic! Should be considered for Pancake's next live video reaction. Have to watch the YT video that has the whole transition, where the band never stops playing & Bono never stops singing between the 2 songs. The "Larissa Onofre" one w/ 15M+ views.

    Oh wow, this sounds like a great idea - to go through their entire catalogue in order will really let you note their growth throughout the years. I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts on the nature of subject matter they cover, the development of their sound (especially after they team up under Eno and Lanois in particular) and how they perform as musicians (including the evolution of Bono's vocals). The guys were young teenagers when they started here so they basically are literal 'boys' and I always find that their sound reflects it here - everything on this album is primary colors in a lot of ways but their delivery, especially Bono's raw vocals are so earnest it practically jumps out of the speakers at you. If nothing else, they were always fearless and willing to experiment... and when it landed, it was potent indeed. Anyway, I'm looking forward to going on this musical journey with you and your viewers. We'll see post-punk U2 -.nuWave U2 - Americana/Rhythm and Blues U2, Industrial Cyberpunk U2, Disco U2 and reflective/middle age U2... and all will have a healthy dose of politics, art and religious overtones for good measure - I'll make some popcorn for the ride !

    I'm so glad you're doing this deep dive. U2 is an incredible band but you can't fully appreciate them without understanding their progression from 4 teenagers playing simple songs from their hearts, which is what Boy is, for all of its flaws.

    I was a huge U2 fan in the early 80’s. I remember telling my brother “I think these guys are going to be huge”. I really love their first 5 albums and the B sides albums. This is awesome

    A great album. I've always loved U2's early stuff. The next two albums "October",and "War" are also favorites of mine. All three were produced by Steve Lillywhite who also produced albums for Simple Minds,XTC,and Big Country.

    I loved 'Boy' - such a great debut album that is part of the soundtrack of my teenage years. 'Shadows and Tall Trees' is one track I especially love from this album, although it is filled with so many great songs. If you get the chance, check out the demo of 'Shadows and Tall Trees' as it has a different feel to it that I adore as well. Also, check out any live version of 'Electric Co' from this period as it is just an explosion of energy on stage. Sadly, things are going to take a dip when you do the 'October' album as that was riddled with problems, but don't worry as 'War' onwards is exceptional.

    Underrated album. One of the few U2 albums that has seamless transitions between songs. Also, there’s a great version of “Out Of Control” from their Dublin concert in 2001. You should check it out

    Still my favourite album ever, amazing to watch your reaction. My childhood is wrapped up in this album as I heard it when I was six years old via my brother Stephen who is a massive U2 fan. It reminds me of being at home with my family and most importantly my late mother. Than you for the experience

    Even with all of U2's bona fide worldwide hits from later albums, they'll still play live on tour "Out of Control," "I Will Follow," and occasionally "The Electric Co" off this record. So, you have good taste, Pancake. (The Electric Co. is my personal fav off BOY. What a rock song.)

    A great debut album by U2. So glad you started with it chronologically! I was in high school when this came out, but didn't learn about U2 until a friend loaned me his "Boy" album in college. Bono and Adam were only 20, and The Edge and Larry were only 19 when it was released in 1980. You will see the roots of how they started and how they progressed over the decades! A talented bunch of lads!

    The live version of An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart at Red Rocks 1983 in amazing. The two songs are meant to be played together like that and run into each other if allowed to continue without pause on the album. The live transition is amazing, but we all know Edge is the master of transitions :)

    What?! All their albums?! Yasssssss! Oh, I am in seventh heaven * heart eyes go here * I can't wait for An Cat Dubh and Into The Heart from this one. They were using random sound effects on I Will Follow. A bicycle wheel spinning and throwing bottles in an alley lol! Where will they go lyrically. They go all over, into, around and through Bono's brain. :D

  • @ursgeiser6570
    @ursgeiser65706 ай бұрын

    I've come to love this debut even more over the years, lots of short, energetic songs that worked well live. But the atmospheric song package An Cat Dubh+Into The Heart with the transition is brilliant, which wasn't so clear in your excerpts. I would have liked U2 to at least partially continue and develop this style of music. Tip: You should choose something from the career-defining Red Rocks concert/Colorado 1983/DVD after the 3rd album War (apparently you haven't shown a live video of it yet). It was then that the global rock music media became aware of U2. Rockpalast / Deutsches Fernsehen signed U2 for the Loreley Festival, where I saw U2 live for the first time and was overwhelmed by the energy, passion and closeness to the audience. I Will Follow is about the untimely death of Bono's mother when he was a teenager,

    So happy you're doing this, @PancakeMarshmallowDude. Love U2! My fav rockers still active today. U2 are best approached as an *"album band"* & a *live band.* BOY is a stunning debut. Consider that THEY WERE SO YOUNG. Some members were only 19(!) at the time. Their first single off this, "Out of Control," Bono wrote on his 18th birthday. But already it was clear that this band was head-&-shoulders above most new bands at the time, and they held the seeds to go someplace truly special in the music biz. The songs are tight & full of hooks. The band bursting w/ raw energy, sincerity, and youthful questioning. Dealing w/ the ambiguity inherent in those yrs when you're not a kid anymore but not quite confidently a man either. Tackling dark subject matter yet still managing to end up so darn positive feeling. Very excited to follow your journey through U2's amazing catalogue. These first 3 albums---BOY, OCTOBER, and WAR---represent their "early period," before the band's sound changes.

    So, I checked and it appears that they recorded the songs between July and September 1980, and released it on October 20, 1980, so Larry was still 18 during that time - turned 19 eleven days after the release of the album. In any case, yes, they were all very young and had already been together for several years at the time!@@AndTheRoadGoesEverOn

    U2 is obvoious one of the most underratest bands nowadawy, but sure the newest releases after pop went all in the wrong direction (in my opinion). All the songs from Boy over October, War, The Uforgettable Fire (My favorite Album), The Joshua Tree, Rattle And Hum, Achtung Baby, Zooropa and Pop are one of the Best Albums in history until now. The rest you can throw them in the trash. I find the people hating U2 just dont know what original Music or fantastic/fenomenal Music is. The Quality of these Albums are unbelieveably.

    Haha...Saturday Matinee was just a short (originally unnamed) instrumental outro at the end of very early pressings of the album that was cut from most later versions. They added it back on for the remastered version. I guess it's a processed instrumental excerpt from "Saturday Night," which was an outtake that later became "Fire" on their next album.

    U2 had so many "bad" songs that just worked. Ironically, the quality of the work went down (from an emotional standpoint) when they decided to start writing "good songs" after 2001. Some would argue going back to "The Joshua Tree" but those people are just try hards lol.
