I was born behind the iron curtain and every single time I hear this song I can see my grandmother staring at the TV news showing people climbing over the Berlin Wall with this song playing in the background and my Grandma muttering over and over again "This can't be true... This can't be true..." The song and that moment are fused together forever.

I'm a 51 year old German man, and growing up, I always felt 2nd-hand embarrassment (aka cringe) about Klaus' German accent and their hairdo etc... Until I was in the audience of their "wind of change tour" I didn't understand how HUGE they were... but now, seeing great people like you react to them on KZread, analysing them and telling me how much you respect them, really lets me understand the magnitude of their influence and greatness. So thanks a lot for your great reaction, analysis and for removing some of my "German inferiority complex".

I love this song. From Dec 1985 to Apr 1988 I was a US Army military police officer stationed in the former FRG. I left thinking that damn wall would never fall. I’ve walked the border near Camp Lee, my second station in the FRG was 7 air minutes from the Czech border and in the middle of the Fulda Gap. My will was written at the age of 19, all done by choice, I come from a service family. My great uncle survived D Day at Normandy, my mom’s cousin earned a Medal of Honor in Vietnam, my father was wounded at Dak To in Vietnam. When the wall fell I was out of the Army in college. Then this song hit. Every time I hear this song I get goosebumps. And yes, it was a song of hope.

Wind of Change is a MASTERPIECE. Deeply meaningful and deeply emotional.

I consider this one of the greatest rock ballads ever written. Surely, it is. And that the band did a tremendous job of capturing the kind of emotional atmosphere created by all of these important changes.

This song and "99 Red Balloons" meant so much to those of us that lived through the Cold War. I'm not crying really.

The other track of the time is Stings song ... lets hope the Russians love their children too... Cannot remember the title yet.🤔 As for the whistling Beth think about the scene in the third man ... That sets the start of the cold war feel...and then think of this at what was approaching the end of the cold war period.

The whistling is probably what first attracted me to the song. This song is just so beautiful.

Boy. I remember watching the Berlin wall come down.. For those of us that grew up during the cold War it was magic. The World was filled with so much hope for a minute or two. And now today.....it rips the heart to pieces hearing leaders threatening nuclear war.

Right. I am glad that at least my children are a grown up - I'd hate to have to try to explain to a 9-12 years old child what is going on and what the danger is. I guess in the 60es, 70es and 80es, we had great music to escape into and find peace and comfort in.

I don’t think this song would be the same without that whistle. When listening to the radio, the minute you hear that whistle you knew what song was coming on. As a Gulf War Vet I remember the version that was used as a dedication to those of us serving overseas and the families we left behind.

Back in the early 80s, Klaus lost his voice, and after two vocal cord surgeries and vocal therapy, his voice came back strong as ever.

This song still takes me back to fall of the wall and gives me chills.

Usually overlooked is Rudolph Schenker's vocal harmonies!

I'm a huge Scorps fan. I've seen them live 15 times. They always are great live!

The first concert my dad ever took me was Scorpions in 93. Backstage with Meet and Greet. I've later seen Bon Jovi, R.E.M., Prince and many others, but Scorpions still have a special place in my heart. I'll never give that drumstick I got away.

Prior to 2/24/2022 I would never have thought this, but now I think this song has not aged very well. It seems that there was no fundamental change after all. Slava Ukraini!

It wasn't written after the fall of the Berlin Wall, but after a Rock Festival in Moscow in August 1989. He described the feeling of a new wind in the Sovjet Union, which led ultimatly in the German Unfication.

It was the mid 1990's. My English ex wife and I were touring the Midlands, stopping for a pub lunch here and there. Wherever we went, if there was a jukebox, someone would drop "Winds of Change" when they heard my American accent. It was a word to me wise. We also called it "Gorky Park".:)

А в Россию и дальше будут приезжать многодетные семьи из этих стран плюс Канада и Австралия и др. , в страну где, по их высказываниям, есть перспективы и есть нормальное будущее для их детей. Гляньте только, какие они оставляют там дома и фермы в обмен на будущее своих детей. Плевали они на высокие зарплаты за Западе, обосновываясь здесь, на пустом месте. И еще, кошмаров надо было бояться в 2014 году в Киеве. Уже бы привыкли.

Wind of change is one of the most beautiful and important songs ever written

The Teutonic Terrors of metal! This band is unbelievably talented!! They are incredible live!!! The true masters of the rock ballad!!! My wife has passed…so now, it’s all about “We’ll burn the sky”

This song is so epic. A few days before the wall fell me, my friend and our moms, visited the Reichstag and Tiergarten - Area along the wall. Surprisingly we found some plattform there installed where you could look over the wall, from a heightened view. I suppose it was the same platform where David Hasselhoff stood on, when he sung "Looking for Freedom". These were like the hymns for this special time, alltogether with "Freiheit" from Marius-Müller Westernhagen.

I do not know if I am already ready to hear this song again. It was a massive hit way back in Germany and it was played everywhere until I got completely tired of it.

Think it is so interesting that it is a slow song, not a happy celebrating song. It was a cold war where the peace never seem to come (I guess, I'm born 1990).. And his emphasis on the word change i think is a way of saying "Now let there be real change". Fun fact as a toddler i was in Berlin just after the fall of the wall. In 2019 i was back on my own and it felt like home, where history and rebirth meets.

the scorpions was a very dynamic group and they were so intense and fun to hear that once you heard their music you had to have more, kinda like a addiction that you couldn't satisfy.

I had liked the Scorpions for some time for thier hard rock nearly metal songs, but this is the song where I realized Klaus Meine was an amazing singer. I wish I could like it twice but instead I will commment to appease the algorithm gods. Have a wonderful unit of time.

Klaus Meine is one of the greatest rock singers to ever be on stage. He can hold his own against a Mercury or Dio. The harder songs do not do his voice justice in many cases, but listen to In Trance, We'll burn the Sky, or Send me an Angel. His voice blows you out of the water. Still Loving You also demonstrates his amazing range and pitch, but that song's been as done to death as Wind of Change 😉

My father was in West Berlin before the wall went up during the airlift from '49-'51.

A deep & meaningful tune that has it's own beauty. One I shall keep playing.

I remember watching the wall come down on the news in 1989. I was only 8 years old and didn’t understand what was going on but my parents explained it as best they could. Dad born in 1942 and mom in 1943 had grown up in the Soviet era and the wall going up. I remember dad saying he never thought that any of this would happen in his lifetime.

Much better than our generation murmuring: hup 2-3-4 on the way to Vietnam..or our parents coming home weary from war only to see the wall go up. The solemness of this song and time..and the hope it restored was truly monumental. Today..not so much I'm afraid. Glad you enjoyed this wonderful song.

Very iconic song. I was just out of my teens when it came out, and was in the middle of it too having just been in the middle of one of the revolutions that ended communism in eastern Europe. Scorpions are legends. They released a new album recently. :)

They were my first concert as a kid in 93. Face the Heat Tour. I still have a drumstick that they used. Always nice to see people discover bands that I've known for all of my life. Wind of Change has always been a favorite of mine.

The first concert I ever attended was the Scorpions with Bon Jovi opening for them in Rochester, NY. 1984. I was a soldier stationed in Upstate NY. at the time and later was stationed in West Germany 1985 - 1988.

When this songs was released I was teen and song bring so much hope from world peace and bright future. It was happy song. Now when cold war II is here and iron curtain has landed again it makes me sad. I remember seeing as kid those men who had fight in ww2 and wounded. Back then song gave hope that it wouldn't happen again.

Hiya Beth, so glad I found your channel tonight through this song - I was an engineer UK Naval Officer through the 80's and and early 90's and this song was played daily onboard ship. It was almost an anthem! Now I'm looking after my two beautiful Ukrainian fatherless neighbour families the best I can in south coast UK. Beautiful song and beautifully presented - thanks Beth 👍😊

I can't even picture this song without the whistle. It's absolutely iconic. As a child of the Cold War, this song is such a tribute to my history. I grew up not wondering if I was going to face a nuclear holocaust, but only questioning when it was going to happen. I remember "The Day After", and could picture the "dust that was a city" in "99 Red Balloons". I was a senior in high school when the Berlin Wall fell. And, to quote another tribute song, "Right here, right now, there is no other place I'd rather be. Right here, right now, watching the world wake up from history." There is so much hope in "Winds of Change", which has always been one of my favorites. Now, I just worry that we're slipping back, that Russia is wanting to rebuild the wall (and the idea of a border wall in Mexico honestly scares the hell out of me).

As a Ukrainian, this song has a special meaning for me. I was born a few years before it was written and it was one of the signature tunes of my youth. And now that russia returned to its dictatorship ways and unleashed a terrible war upon our country, the band, as you mentioned, changed the lyrics to offer their support to Ukraine. Gestures like this, along with their advocacy, give us hope for a briggter future

I was about 9 years old when this song came about. I feel like I was born into such a positive attitude world and now its all gloom and doom. This song is so moving and Klaus Meine is one sure fine singer. Such a great song.

There is a 1978 live album called The Tokyo Tapes. His singing here sounds very different. It could partly be I understand the lyrics better.

So, the reason they - and many Germans - were appreciative of Gorbachev was his refusal to send Russian troops to support East Germany forces trying to maintain the security of The Wall. Eric Honecker was losing control in October '89 and requested Gorbachev send forces to help him maintain control and power and Gorby refused. That was essentially the signal that Honecker's days were numbered.

This song is special and heartfelt because it's about the Cold War and his dreams of what things could be like if that wall was gone (e.g. "like brothers"). That wall finally came down .......but now look what Putin has done. And look what just happened with 40 people in Russia killed ....by ISIS? It's just really sad and it makes this song even sadder. I was a teen in the 80s and so many of the songs of that time were about the Cold War. They now give new meaning today...especially Tears for Fears Everybody Wants to Rule the World. I feel that history is repeating itself. We take 10 steps forward, only to take 15 steps backward many years later.

After the Berlin wall and Roger Waters played the wall there, the scorpions were part of it. Part of that performance.

This song brought tears to my eyes when it first came out. The realization that humankind had won, and the evil that is communism was largely defeated, and relegated to the trash heap of history. That everyone had seen the truth…. Absolute tears of joy. Now, it’s tears of rage and frustration that so many people are hellbent on bringing it back.

1989 goes down with 1848 and 1917-18 as the most revolutionary years in history. No other song can encompass that feeling like this one.

I’d say WOC because I think more people know it worldwide. I like CW better because I prefer Axl’s voice. Not a knock to Klaus at all, he is an amazing singer. It’s just a preference.

I was stationed in Europe in the years leading up to this. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the tearing down of the Berlin Wall was a great opportunity for a lasting peace which unfortunately we wasted.

Por la guitarra que toca en este video Rudolf Schenker, veo que es una versión acústica, me parece.
