    +Gary Ferraro I began by watching your 722.6 teardown and inspection video, because I have to tear into one tomorrow, and have never done one before. I worked under a builder for a couple years, then moved to a different shop, so now I don't really have anyone to ask questions when I get stuck. So, I am going to continue to make my way through your uploads to see what I can learn!

    What are the most common parts that goes bad in those transmissions? I got a 2001 lexus es300 and yesterday a did an drain and refill. But it was done when it had 60k miles Or around there and now is at 179k and i did it myself. The fluid was super black i even got pics of the before and after. And thanks 🙏

    2000 ES 300. Thats why I am skeptical. The car stalled while driving, and you could obviously feel some erratic shifting. I didn't drive it far because it was towed in. Just drove it long enough to get into 3rd gear. It had a p0171 code also, and I was thinking that had to do with the vehicle stalling, because it didn't feel like it stalled from going into lock up, or something like that. We are soo slammed right now, I just had the R&R guy pull it, because I knew I'd find some hard parts issues inside when I open it on monday. I am just suspicious about those three trans codes, wondering if this also has a computer issue similar to the RAV 4 that the bulletin on sonnax.com refers to

    Gary, you seem willing to assist with questions- which is very cool of you! I'm currently going through a U140. I'll try to keep it short, but it probably won't work...lol. The first is: after installing new steels and frictions (Raybestos) in the forward (C1) drum, I ended up with .050" clearance. The specs call for .024"-.041". My backing plate is currently .130 so I was going to move up to a .141" which would have made my clearance .039". I bought a 141, but the package contained a 130. The only other package they had was also a wrongly packaged 130 and I can't seem to find a 141 anywhere. Do you think .050" clearance would be a problem? Second question: I installed the direct (C2) drum with new rear cover sealing rings. I was checking the underdrive piston travel with 60psi and went ahead and hit the other ports. The C2 piston moves, but I can hear air getting past the sealing rings. The drum shows almost no ring wear, and the ring grooves in the cover look good as well. I don't know if this is normal or not. What do you think? The only reason I went into it in the first place was to replace a shelled planetary set. It ran fine before that. Sorry for being so long. Thanks in advance, G.

    That's OK Gary. The supplier did find a .141" backing plate in another miss-packaged package. That took care of that problem and brought me well within specs. I wasn't sure if the sealing rings should leak air like they were, but I just went ahead and put it together as it was. In the end, everything works as it should. The car drives great! Take care, G.

    gary good afternoon, wanted to check something with you if you have the time. i worked on a u241 out of a 2009 rav4 originally this unit had issues with the brake hub, it broke , so i overhauled the unit and added frictions replaced broken parts, and rear planet, converter and added the zip kit from sonnax. checked valve body and solenoids. so i put everything back together and cleared memory, and started the vehicle, at the hoist it ran fine, but when i test drove it on the street it had a 2/3 flare and bind up.. flare almost went away but it still had the bind. so i took the side cover out and the direct drum frictions were burnt, so i replaced them and test drove it again and it still had the bind, checked boost valve and checked ECM its commanding solenoids and its within range. right now im thinking that maybe the frictions are to tight even though they moved ok in the drum. what could have i missed, or maybe it could be a valve body problem. costumer says it was driving fine before the brake hub broke and stopped moving. you think i could have caused the problem... thanks in advance gary, appreciate it a lot.

The shop I sent it to said similar things you say in this video which made it sound like they were knowledgeable about it and could get the job done right. Is there anything I should ask them to do to increase the life of the rebuilt unit? Also is there anything I can do to get as much life out of it as possible? Something like a drain and fill and fluid replacement every so many miles? I did a drain and fill a few months ago but didn't replace the filter. I'm wondering if that had to do with its demise.

    I have a 1999 lexus rx300 awd u140f transmission I believe. The transmission shifts perfectly but the first time I use the car for the day it wont engage into drive. Sometimes it take 30 seconds sometimes it takes a couple minutes. It goes into reverse just fine. After it does go into drive, its fine unless I take it out of drive in the first couple minutes then it may be a 10 to 15 second delay to engage. After that its fine all day and usually after sitting for hours it is still fine. Very rarely does it do it again until the next day. Also, this car sits for months at a time while Im not in town at times. After I return the car is perfect for a few days to a week and then it starts doing it again, delay times slowly getting longer. No transmission codes just air fuel ratio codes. Ive had the car for a year and a half and it has done it since I bought it.

    Wow, Im surprised its lasting that long, theses transmissions arent the greatest, i do alot of these units, when i had delays it was usually do to a filter problem or the geartrain itself. Transmission repair might as well be magic to me, very impressive on how you are able to know whats wrong before you actually see inside. I have a problem that has me stumped. My Lexus LS 400 a 1995 model will only engage any gear the first couple of times the shifter is moved to select a gear, then nothing. Moving the shifter after the initial gear changes has no effect in moving the car, the R.P.M.s weill actually increase slightly when selecting a gear, almost like a tranny does when shifting to park. I ran a scan tool but dont recall the number something to do with lack of voltage to ecm . I have changed the fluid but nothing has changed. Any info to point me in the right direction would be nice. Thanks and keep up the good work.

    @@GaryFerraro I meant in all gear selectors the car functions as it should (forward or reverse) but only in P it doesn't stand still. I'm guessing it's the parking pawl or related component. That's a junkyard transmission. I just removed that one and installed with another junkyard transmission and now the SUV doesn't move in any gear selector. I believe this 2nd transmission has fried clutch discs. What test can you recommend to determine the transmission is not faulty without disassembling it or installing in the vehicle? PS...I tried starting the vehicle in every gear selector and it would only start in P and N... this confirms the selector cable is installed correctly. Appreciate any top you can provide. Thank you

    Hi Gary, i got 2000 RX 300 fwd. Not sure if its got u140e or f. The car has no codes, shifts perfectly but no power on acceleration just goes so slow and doesnt move further and moves slow on engine restart. What could be wrong ? the car has 250k miles is it the transmission out ? wont there be any check engine codes ? What do u recommend ? get a used transmission or get it rebuilt... do you know any one from CA. please suggest any alternate interchangeable transmissions that would work for this model

The fluid when checked doesnt look dirty or burnt smell. The filter might be clogged for sure. could a clogged filter lose acceleration front and reverse?

    Hey Gary, big fan of your channel, hey I got an RX300, first and second gear shift perfect, but it won't grab 3rd or 4th or reverse, you feel it a little but mostly like it's shuttering, when I took it apart one of the seals between the case and valve body was blown, replaced that seal and SL2 solenoid, it has a little more bite but still does the same thing, do you think it's the clutches or should I replace the whole valve body.

  • @GaryFerraro

    @GaryFerraro

    7 жыл бұрын

    Probably not valvebody or solenoids, i would say there is an issue with the geartrain and possibly the 3rd clutch, if you can get the rear cover off(by left wheel) you can see the 3rd clutch and geartrain. The cover wont come right off, trans may have to be lowered down by releasing mounts or dropping down the frame, but make sure the trans is supported.

    I've a 2010 Toyota Matrix S AWD 2.4 L with a U140F transmission. Lost reverse after gunning up my 300 ft muddy driveway. I pulled the transmissio pan. The fluid was black, burned. There are a coating of fine silver metallic particles on the magnets. Magnets were not completely coated. The filter was dirty so I changed that. No big chucks in the filters just grain sized silvery particulates. I pulled the 4 shift solenoids, cleaned the shift solenoids and used compressed air then electrically tested them with 12 volts leads and all 4 clicked telling me they work. I reinstalled the solenoids with new fluid, filter and gasket. Still no reverse. Could it be the valve body assembly?

  • @GaryFerraro

    @GaryFerraro

    +HondaSolutions I believe what they are reffering to would be the sensor over the differential where the axles go in, if you have one there thats the VSS, the other one on top of the trans is the input speed sensor. Do you have a sensor over by the diff?

  • @HondaSolutions

    @HondaSolutions

    +Gary Ferraro There are 2 speed sensors, one is a counter gear located above the solenoid connector, the other further back from the starter. Both are the same part # according to Lexus. No sensor or wires are over by the diff in the back. I'm sure this is a U140E transmission.

    +HondaSolutions They are the input and output speed sensors, if you have live data on your scan tool, drive the car make sure they are working.
