I find it interesting that the Canadian military lets you buy your own kit. I knew a couple people who lost rank being caught with their own gear in the US Military, especially the dragon skin back in the mid 2000's 06-09

Buying your own load-bearing gear (a platform for carrying water, ammo, etc) is extremely common in the US army, and it seems the Canadian army now. But that is something VERY different from using your own PPE. It's one thing to provide your own carrier, it's quite another to provide your own kevlar armor.

@@jarvy251 was in the marine corps so probably the most absurdly strict in the US branches. We were not allowed to have anything not issued by CIF or the unit back then anyway. We couldn't even choose where your IFAK was attached to your gear. Could have been a unit problem or it could have been marine corps wide all I know is what I had to deal with

@@bryanengland2466very unit dependent. i had one CO say as long as it had been issued (this is when m81 pouches were around), next CO didn’t really care as long as it was coyote. Next CO didn’t really care (ares in oceanside was the shit) and when i was getting out in 2013 they wanted it to be marine corps issue, from what i can see from yt they seem to have a lot of flexibility in privately purchased gear.

it's because we lack the budget or know how to produce good issued fighting kit. the standard Tac vest is useless for anything outside of garrison training and a weekend exercise

@Matsimus Looks like a company was "inspired" by the First Spear Siege-R. Plus, TacticalXmen describes this as a 'tactical vest' NOT a plate carrier like you mention. I thought its important to share this difference since you state this is a 'plate carrier' nuermous times, which it is not. Your critique of other smaller style vests that only cover vital areas is actually what a true plate carrier is and how it functions because it prioritizes weight instead of coverage. This vest by TacticalXmen is meant for coverage as you can see by it's layout; big overlapping areas that layer on top of its self meant for soft armor especially in the cummerbund area. But this is probably a funny British English vs American English translation issue, because the British Army calls the Osprey Mk 2 thru 4 as a 'plate carrier' and those are bulky vests that also accepts rifle plates.

Pistols were made illegal recently, joining many of the "assault style" rifles, but the current government got spanked badly when they tried to stray into hunting rifle territory. The average Canadian doesn't have much patience for guns in the city, but the rural and wilderness areas are obviously a place you need access to a rifle. Grizzly bears are a thing in this country, after all.@@organicwest

I don't get it. Why ? This sucks. Shields are way better. I would get shields instead. I get, what lightsabers, are like for Jedi and SEALS and stuff, but everybody could use shields. Way better, then physical barriers.

The personal shielding on those borg didn't seem to fare well against .45acp, which is a round notoriously easy to defeat with simple kevlar armor. As on earth you are most likely to encounter even more potent ballistic threats, shields are not the way to go.
