Thousands of Americans go to Russia every year but only a few get arrested and they are usually Soldiers, Spies with multiple passports who worked for CIA or Journalists who criticize Russia.

He was stationed in South Korea, it's only a couple hours away. She was working as a bar tender when they met. Maybe she went back home to Vladivostok to get away from him and he followed her. Part of the report is that he beat her up pretty badly.

Seems like they were both trouble makers and he should have went to Texas like he was supposed to and not to follow her to Vladivostok. He'll be out in two months....not sure why this story is even news, tbh.

While he is in a Russian prison, he will find that the military will be drafting charges. If and when he does return, he will immediately be thrown in the brig until his Court Martial Trial.

He was probably online dating and was scammed by her for hundreds of dollars. Then he secretly traveled to where she was to fight her and get the money back only for her to accused him of stealing and beating her up. Now he's arrested and probably won't be coming back any time soon. Either way he's gonna get punish by both party no matter what, by the Russian for beating one of their citizen up and by the USA for leaving his station without permission in South Korea.

So a U.S service member stationed in South Korea is granted leave by his unit commander, buys a plane ticket, travels to Russia, a nation that the U.S State Dept has warned against, to visit his Russian girlfriend and then is arrested. So many things wrong with this story, wish the reporter would have done due diligence with this story then discussing Putin and his inauguration. Also, the reporter gives him the rank of Staff Sgt (E-6) but shows him as a private (E-2). Reminds one of Lee Harvey Oswald.

The same thing would happen here in many places. If an angry girlfriend calls the cops you are likely going to jail. The difference is absent serious alleged harm you probably are released on bond fairly quickly and likely the whole thing can be resolved by a plea without too much damage fairly quickly.
