U.S. Knives and Bayonets of WWI

Today we're taking a closer look at a few different knifes and Bayonets from WWI . Unfortunately I don't have an example of the 1917 Trench Knife yet :(. but one day....

The lightly stamped name on the replaced wood handle appears to end in "Hardware", which may have been the retailer's mark. Maybe Bob's Hardware? M.H Cole's book US Military Knives III indicates that the C.T. marking was added to note the change of construction to the pommel being integral with the tang. This was probably a simplification of manufacturing rather than a statement of quality. They also had a black finish rather than blued and scabbard catch omitted. If you have not done one yet, a video on the various scabbards would inform the novice collector. The transition from the leather versions to the M-1910 and later M3 and M7s is part of the story. There are also two types of the WW 1 M-1917, and the plastic version made for WW2.

Excellent comment! Thank you for watching. Since doing the video about a year ago I have since learned/realized it said hardware instead of a last name and felt real dumb for not noticing it sooner 🤦. As far as the types of the WWI M1917's you have the Springfield and Rock Island for the M1903 and then you have the Remington and Winchester (also British proof and non British proof) for the M1917 and trench guns...am I missing any others?

My grandad died not to long ago, me and my family went to help clear up the house because someone wanted to buy it, and in the attic I found a First World War bayonet dated 1917, ever since then I have collected army surplus from the 20th century

I'm not surprised that the bolo 1917 came from a veteran who served in the Philippines. The bolo is originally a Philippine weapon or farming tool.

@@bilgeratmilitaria Sometimes I think of that too, to see a snippet of history. I have an original m1905 bayonet in relic condition, the tip is damaged and there is a slight bend to the blade. I'm from the Philippines and I can only imagine it may have killed a Japanese soldier.

@@georgebenta3435 That's awesome, I'd bet that it probably has! I have very few relic condition items but I want to get into collecting more of them. Finding anything U.S. made in relic condition available for sale here in the states is near impossible. But German and Russian Relic condition items are all over the place

@@bilgeratmilitaria Here it's the opposite, almost all ww2 items are in relic condition, barn finds, battlefield pickup/ battlefield grave dug(specially for Japanese relics), or really used or repurposed after the war. That is why you're lucky to own a 1917 bolo, it's a miracle it left the Philippines. I think it's very rare to see a US bolo here in any condition because they are really used and sought after.

@@georgebenta3435 I'd love to score some relic condition M1905 bayonets or really any U.S. Relic weapons! 😂. That's so crazy. The M1917 Bolo's are very common here especially in ebay, GunBroker and gun shows but they are getting pretty damn expensive these days

I have a bayonet that I cannot find on any identification guides. I’ve looked at over 500 pics and have had no luck. Is there any way that I could send you a pic of it? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

m1917 bolos from ww1 were reissued during ww2 to the marines to supplement the ww2 u.s.m.c. bolos because of the high demand and use for them. alot of people especially on youtube call the ww2 marine corps bolos medical bolos and say they were used by corpsman NO they were marine corps bolos for marines!!! could corpsman have carried them as well yes its possible.

The M1917 Bolo? Yeah man, I wish it was an original grip for sure but the name/serial number carvings definitely adds some character to it. Especially it most likely being a WWII modification. Some day I'll grab another one with original grips. Thanks for watching! I appreciate it.

The handle is original on my M1917 bayonets but not on the M1917 Bolo Knife. The big clues that tell me they've been replaced is that it's a different color, doesn't have the same texture as the original and the screws are different/replaced.
