U.S. Elite Fear U.S. Losing Its Dominance - Global Capitalism with Richard Wolff

When an empire is in decline, there is a scramble for people to take and hold on to as much as they can. Prof Wolff takes a moment to explain how the last decades of redistribution of wealth to the upper class is a sign that the U.S. is “a declining empire in which those at the top (the corporate leaders, the wealthy, the political elite, working together, intermarried, and going to the same golf courses) work a good deal to shift the burden of a declining empire off of them and on to everybody else.” While it has been going on for some time, we’re reaching the limit of what is tolerable.
In the full lecture, Prof Wolff explains how this is one piece of understanding not just the military war in Ukraine, but the larger economic war between the U.S. and China. Watch the full lecture here...

It looks to me as the U.S.A. has been deep in decline for a long time now. 70-80% Of the population is on antidepressants, antianxiety,- antipsychotic, fentalal or opium derived drugs. Ten of millions of homeless people thru out the nation. Large percentages of the cities in the U.S. are run down ghettos.

I live in a small town in the Adirondack mountains in upstate NY. We’ve had like 30 people over 5 years die of drug overdoses, two murders, cops shot two people, the other night a guy went into Stewart’s and said he had a bomb. The police surrounded the place for six hours until the guy came out. This stuff never happened before, I am 51, never seen anything like it. We also had Israel Keyes, serial killer, rob the bank in town back in 2012?

The only way they can maintain production is an increase in oil price to 100 to 200 dollars a barrel. Tight oil, shale, tar sands, clathrates, and other dregs, are potentially much bigger than the conventional reserves with the difficulty they are much harder, more polluting, and energy intensive to extract. I wrote a paper on the shifting of debt burden from the high class to the working class and poor demographics. It is evident in the interest rates charged to those respective demographics. For instance, the high class individuals and households have the largest debt burden absolutely and relatively; yet, they pay the lowest real interest on that debt and can even pay no interest since there are laws that allow the rich to claim interest against the tax liability. On the other hand, the poor have the lowest debt burden absolutely and relatively; and, yet they are charged the highest interest rate (up to 500% interest). This difference in the interest charged on debt for the rich and the poor is precisely a shift in the debt burden from the rich to the poor.

The talk of empire is dated for the circumstances. There are those who are interested in it, but the US and UK are plutocracies and driven by the political and economic concerns of that social strata. And we are afflicted by their despotic madness to drive us (the people into ruin); it isn’t just greed but malignant contempt aimed at us. They are enamored of "libertarianism" yet those in that faction seek to destroy the US as a republic and rule on its ashes. They are indifferent to US empire. The faction of wealth dedicated to this is 700+ individuals and that is a frightening level of hate of the powerful to be aimed at us. They seek not only to be on the top of the pile but smash everyone they stand on. This is a far darker reality.

I would not generalize, that it is the US and US only. If you ask the questions, who owns the world, then after some deep investigations you will recognise that it is about 8000 people. That is it! Those bankers and others own corporations through Mutual funds like Blackrock, Vanguard and others... The companies and their CEO-s and others only execute the requests from their owners, and get paid pretty well. The owners request bigger and bigger profits. It is implemented by applying bigger and bigger margins on products and services. You can't have a 20, 40, 50 or 99% margin running a restaurant as a family business. But the so-called high tech, the SW, Services, biotech... the military and some others are pretty well usable vehicles for the company owners to milk the whole world. It is simply insane, disgusting and unbelievable to know how greedy these owners really are. Some biotech companies charge a 99% margin rate on some special drugs!!! Apple to talk into your faces, that they serve You! NO, They and the others are simply ROB You to the bone. With 40 - 50- 60% margins on some "high-end" items, that do what their owners ask them to do. And the very - very few, the 8000 greedy gang-members execute the request with millions of diligent supporters, many of whom are really out of character. Say for example 100 000 professionals work to create products and services, and the total payment of these workers in a year very often less, than half of those, who do NOTHING, just own the company through stock exchanges and dictate the major direction though board meetings and votings. The stock market in the current form is a Huge SCAM. Scam of the cheaters. It does not work the way, it was intended to work 100 years earlier. If you do not believe this, just check for example Exxon. Calculate, what might be the total payment of all employees, and see, how huge their yearly profit was and divide the total yearly profit by the number of employees. There are many things that has NO limitations. But the first, that comes into my mind is the GREED of the gangsters. For this reason, this rotten capitalism will be flushed down the toilet in the next 20 - 50 years, and the process started Not recently, but after 1945, when the US dropped the atomic bomb to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is pretty much in a few sentences about How the world currently operates.

We have been overspending on the military since Reagan BORROWED 2 TRILLION to start a military spending spree supporting the military industrial complex that continues to this day and leading to the militarism we saw during the W. Bush administration. There is something wrong with spending more on our military than the next 25 countries combined and spending 3/4 of a BILLION EACH on aircraft while our deficit soars, the middle class is gutted and poverty rates increase.

Here in the SF Bay, the former Zen Hospice (a spiritual non-profit) worked the same racket. Zen volunteers provide the image of social goodness, paid staff (looked down upon by the volunteers) do all the difficult shit, and the highly educated and enlightened Brahmins manage decision-making (and get the nice homes and money). Quite the hustle, no? Common to both the left and the right, no? Exploit people's spiritual beliefs, their desire to be good. This is bull shit, no?

Rentiers are not employers. The FIRE sector (Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate) extracts economic rents from the productive economy. Economic rent is profit that is untethered from the cost of production. Rent on apartments built decades ago are being driven through the roof not because the cost of producing it has increased; what it cost to construct those buildings was spent long ago. Rent is whatever someone will pay. It has nothing to do with production except that rentiers prey on the productive economy to extract as much capital from it as they can. That leaves less that can be invested in plant, equipment, and hiring workers. So rentiers -- especially real estate holding corporations and banks -- are looting the economy for as much as they can grab as it descends into oblivion.

The American way is not the only right way for society. America is very passionate about their freedoms but why do American poltics s act like america wouldn’t be able to have their freedoms if another nation become more powerful ? Today huge part of the population is under the influence of drugs, the homeless are everywhere, making a living is harder every single year, and working for corporations is most depressing and unfulfilling, wealthy are wealthier than ever, and the poor are more plentiful than ever. This is not good for the working poor and that can only lead eventually to mass rebellion. The only solution is for the greedy to give up some of their ill-gotten wealth or except the coming horror that they created for themselves.
