I moved from northern Virginia to California several years ago. The U-Box system was so much cheaper and more convenient than using a national moving company. The two boxes were delivered on time, and the two guys I hired to move my belongings and load the boxes did a great job. I left the U-Boxes in storage in California until I had a permanent residence. Whenever I needed to retrieve something, I called U-Haul and they brought the boxes outside. Finally, I drove the boxes to my new residence and hired two more guys moved my belongings into my home. I suppose these are franchise operators, so your mileage might vary, but I’ll be using U-Haul for my next move.

Just so much cheaper right? That was our experience too. We even had that annoying hiccup with the scheduling but it was still worth the savings. We would do it again too. It also sounds like the smaller local company that had the U-haul boxes ran a pretty tight ship.

@@patricecomedy When I moved seven years ago, I found information on U-Haul’s webpage about hiring additional help. Within the specified weight limits, you can ship almost anything (excluding firearms), but you need to pack your stuff carefully. I gave my bed and couch to charity before I moved, but shipped a couple of pieces of old furniture that have sentimental value. Check the dimensions of the containers online, and then compare the value of what you want to ship and the cost of shipping an additional container if that’s what it takes. Good luck.

Hello, I work for u-haul as a ubox driver. I love hearing customers experiences cause it can help me try to make this moving process less stressful on my end. U-haul does have a lot of moving parts. Pickups on our end are controlled by route times and first come first serve. Also, if you dont answer the phone to confirm pickup or call back we will keep pushing it out. Also other factors to. I had to cancel a pickup cause a major road shutdown cause of a fire. (I work in CA, lol) Our shipping is 3rd party (not employees of uhaul), and that's how we can provide the cheapest rates. If the boxes arrive later than the expected arrival date, there is a daily reimbursement till it arrives. As for the wood boxes, while they my look rough, they are the best for moving. They are breathable and move with the road. Less likely your stuff will be damaged. I also do repairs on the boxes and by far the easiest to work on. Our newer boxes are also great and look 10 times better but are a little more stiff. I always say our wood boxes are good for shipping. Newer plastic/metal boxes are good for storage. Uboxs are also good for temporary storage at your house if you have a project, long term storage at house or on site at uhaul. I have a u-box at my house i pay monthly like a storage unit. Also, load on site is free and self delivery is free (if you have a vehicle capable of towing it) just pay for the amount of boxes used. This can also help cut cost if a delivery fee to your house is pricey. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the comment! It's great that the company has people like you working for it... I experienced (on the delivered side) this type of customer service and it was just what I needed when it I was stressed out with moving. Unfortunately on the pick up side, the service was not as good which was very stressful. I think like anything in life, like going to a restaurant, the experience often revolves around the server and their attitude... with U-Haul being so big, sometimes certain employees will be more helpful than others. It's just a bummer when you get unhelpful employees when you're going through something stressful like moving. Keep up the great attitude! I'm sure your customers REALLY appreciate it.

This was helpful; thanks! Could you give me your thoughts on the timeliness of U-Box delivery, in general, barring highway disasters? LOL. We will only have one week at the destination home to take delivery and unpack - so a relatively tight window of time. Can we be reasonably certain that delivery will happen on the selected day, or should we rent a truck and drive it ourselves, just to be safe (don't really want to do that)? Do you have any suggestions on the best day of the week to schedule delivery? Again, THANK YOU!

Wow what an exciting adventure for you to go through... amazing! Yeah I wish I could help you there but do not have experience with it. I would use the service again if that helps at all! But if you need wicked precision with time and delivery... you might want to check out some competition to be safe. If not though, get the Uboxes and save your money.

Sorry about the experience you had with UhAul…. I am one of the drivers that deliver the boxes to customers and I have never heard of charges for not folding blankets or the bags… we have business cards with direct # to our terminal office and it goes straight through. Every time you call our # you will get the same people in traffic office to help you with anything you might need. Also if you don’t want the wood boxes we do have the white ones. You can see one on the truck in your video. And when your boxes are at our warehouse we make sure they are stored with care. Also when they are shipped they put shipping plates on them which makes it hard for someone to get into them ( it secures the box together by the door so you can’t just cut the lock and get into it). The cover is on for weather protection but when it gets shipped it’s just the box. Hopefully you use us again someday so we can make it right!!! People also use the boxes to store Holliday stuff, or remodel their homes, or kids that go off to college!!!!

Ubox driver here. I rarely charge for unfolded blankets. Only done it twice in my 2yrs cause there was garbage left in it as well. Never heard of the charging for not having it re-bagged. Also, about the number of blankets. At our center we put 2 bags instead of 4 because every time we got bags back. There is limited space on our trucks, and it can add up if all the customers are leaving 2 bags for us. I keep 4 bags on my truck if someone does want extra though.

Funny commenters here are so terrified after this video...like you said, it wasn't really a bad review. I just talked to a rep and she basically told me where the warehouse was the box would be stored on both ends, so it's not really that big of a mystery. And just get it insured. People are so paranoid lollll.

Yeah exactly! To me it's just stuff. If the box gets broken into and my things get stolen I don't really care. And yeah my overall experience was fine and we saved a bunch of money. I'd do it again!

Yes for us wound up worries it was a LOT of energy spent on the phones and making sure everything was actually going to happen. To be honest I think it depends on where you live as well. We lived in a busy area so dealing with U-Haul in a busy town sucks. But where we moved to, well it's a smaller town with bigger driveways and everyone was so chill and easy to get a hold of so... I think if you live in a smaller town it might still be worth considering fort the cost savings.

We used Uhaul Ubox for many times so far so good, the only bummer is our last move, we packed to many heavy boxes of books in 1 Ubox so we have to take out few boxes out. From 3 Ubox and now is 4 Ubox total cause of overweight. good thing we got discount on 4 box we didn’t pay much so that’s good thing, Thanks Uhaul.

Oof :( Does the price change much with multiple boxes? I'm just curious. Yeah that's not the cheapest but that sounds like a big move. Quite the change! I hope you find a solution that doesn't break the bank and gets your stuff there safely.

OMG , we are going thru this NIGHTMARE right now . We were given a closing date on selling our home & the next day closing on the new house . So using those dates after doing a follow up call two days prior to reconfirm those dates , we scheduled for the movers to come. Well yesterday at 4:30pm we get the call, but there was a problem with our packet that somebody didn’t catch so it had to be resubmitted. Monday is memorial day so all these financial institutions are closed, I had to call the Movers and provide them with a new tentative date of the move which will be maybe / possibly/ kinda likely/ maybe not date . Honestly I’m ready to off myself at this point , told wifey you and the dog go ahead to the promised land an I was just going to stay here an see if the New Owners ( seemed like nice ppl ) would let me stay and rent a room from them 🤔🤷‍♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣.

Aw man I totally feel you. How frustrating. This will all be a silly memory soon enough but you still have to get through it first :S You're doing the best you can. Go with the flow. It'll happen one way or another so trying to keep a positive attitude is the only real thing you can do.

they are the cheapest that I found but I'm still trying to get a better idea of how much you can keep in each container. All of my boxes are the same size and from U-Haul but their estimates are just based on how many rooms you have which is not helping

You should be able to get a lot in each one. We had a 5 bdrm house but we sold a lot of stuff, however, we also did move our giant trampoline. You can get more delivered if you have space in your driveway and won't get charged for it so that's nice... but yes, I agree, it's hard to determine just how many you need. There are videos on KZread showing how much you can fit in one but they are also professional packers...ymmv

I work for uhaul currently and the recommended maximum weight of items is 2000 pounds. The box weights approximately 500 pounds and the maximum gross shipping weight of a box is 2500 pounds. Hope that helps!

Hey so what if you don’t have a driveway or yard? Will they drop it off by the curb in any available empty parking spot ? I live in a heavy traffic neighborhood and we park on the streets ,people might be a little mad about it but it’s only for n a few days .

Yes we can put the box where ever you need it!!!! People put them in empty parking spots at apartments!!!! Some condos we have to put them on the curb side way like a parked car. We put it where ever you need to make the move the easiest for you. I have delivered to businesses, apartments, houses, storage units, condos, gated communities, college dorms, pretty much anywhere.

Definitely! Tons of space. We have a king size but we have two twin excels. But our king size frame fit in no problem as I recall. The double check though you might want to check the measurements on their website but I think there's more than enough room from memory.

Would it work to move a 1,000 lb safe? $70/month and $120 for pick up and delivery is considerably less than a safe moving service.

Interesting question and to be honest I'm not sure. It's well within the weight limit but it just seems like it would be so concentrated with the weight.... I wouldn't have a ton of confidence in the construction of the container. Might be worth asking them... If you call on off hours maybe the wait time won't be so bad lol

We got a quote from a couple movers in our previous home which was significantly smaller and it was quadruple the cost!! I mean I get it though... it sure would be nice to have someone else do it for once.

I just want to utilize it for storing on my driveway while my home is being painted, not going anywhere. I wonder how this will go?

That's a really good idea! I think it would work. However, they aren't the most secure boxes out there buuuut they are the cheapest. And you would have to get your own locks too. Depending on your neighborhood it might work just fine.

Yes you need your own locks!! You don’t want anyone else to have your key … it’s your stuff so you should be the only one to have access to it.

Anybody have issues with u box weight? Is it easy to overload due to their wimpy forklift?

To be honest I was surprised that they were able to get all the boxes up. I had one that was loaded with lots of heavy furniture and books, and when I realized how much was in it, I had this fear they would make me open it up and take out some weight. Luckily I didn't have to. I think if you are concerned with weight, it's still such an affordable service it might be worth adding that extra u-Box to spread it out. You'll still come away with spending a lot less than the competition. Good luck with your move!

I did yes. Three actually! One was a 75" which I still had the original box for, another 55'' one where I found a TV box off Marketplace then the 3rd one was kinda crappy and we just wrapped it up in blankets and put it on the top of everything in one of the boxes. Everything showed up just fine. I DID take my computer and main OLED TV (so many screens.. I know) over separately and stored them at my families place.

Well it's their ONE job right? We've booked other U-Haul things like trucks etc. in the past and never had an issue with that. And especially with a family we needed our stuff until the very end. But yeah... hindsight!

Very few times we have had to reschedule a pick up, we usually call the day before to give you a window of your delivery then another call with window of pickup. We also send a text when we are on our way. We actually communicate a lot. I’m very surprised things didn’t go smooth. Everything is planned and scheduled and we follow a system to get things done a certain way and in a timely manner.

I feel very bad about your experience you had with us, but to be honest, maybe they did not explain well how the system works and also the contract, you have to read it in the contract, it explains the things that we do not do that we have to literally explain to you, but the Blanques are on loan, you have to return them, you don't have to fold them or anything like that, if you received two bags in a box, you had to have taken a photo and rectified that is what arrived, that is what I am going to deliver . I don't understand why they put you through so much trouble picking up the box. When we leave you the box, we ask you how many days do you want it for? You have to make a specific day or an approximate one to put it in the schedule apologies. by the team ubox north NJ

We had to always call the main line and never worked with the same person at all which was frustrating... and as far as folding the blankets, it literally said it on the walls of the pods as well as on the bags that delivered the blankets so we just followed it. Ultimately though I think the cost savings made it worth it for us and hopefully that comes out in the video. We got there and so did our stuff without being wet or damaged. Thanks for the message!

it is hard to believe people are willing to use the ubox after watching your video. there is no protection, and they clearly do not maintain their flimsy wooden boxes. obviously, people rely on insurance to get some of their belongings back, and that is if the insurance company is not willing to fight you on it, as it is plain to see there is no real protection, so what do you expect from the insurance company?

It's a good comment... not to mention how vague they are when describing where your stuff is actually being stored. I got the impression from the person who picked our stuff up it was basically being stored in a big tent on a farm. That will vary depending on your area I'm sure as we had rural farmlands not far away. We didn't really care too much about our stuff but it's still our stuff.... things that take years to acquire which we wouldn't have to get all again. I guess now having been through it I would say, if you have nice stuff... don't go the U-Haul route. If you don't reallllly care about your things and money is tight then it is worth the hassle for the savings.

$1500 per box? In Canada here they are pretty cheap... that's the whole point right, you do it yourself which a lot of people don't want to do. They make it that cheap because they literally drop it off and deliver them. It takes them barely any work.
