Back in 4th edition I had a fledgling guard army (a wee child was I). A lone guardsmen bayonetted a carnifex to death (albeit slightly wounded). That guardsman was immediately promoted to power fist sgt and proceeded to fist a couple HQ's over a few games. Due to his tennacity, promotion to senior officer was required. He then died repeatedly for the rest of his career and achieve nothing of note. I learned that when in the direst of needs, lone guardsmen do amazing things...don't promote them though. They get cocky.

That melta guardsman took aim and shot the carnifex straight through the mouth into the abdomen and taking out every single organ in that one shot. For his efforts this guardsman was promoted to corporal and got the prestigious honour of taking commisar Bubbles out for a walk :)

.........That is the official story. What actually happened was that the guardsman was burned as a heretic, because he was obviously consorting with the ruinous powers to be capable of such a feat.

Guard armies have so much opportunity for canon variety, the Chem-dogs, Krieg, Praetorians, Cadians, Tallarn Raiders, Mordians, Steel Legion, and a bajillion fan additions would be plausible. +1 for someone taking advantage of this, and +1 for Commissar Bubbles!

Now that's a proper Guard army. Good to see Mordians getting some love too, it's usually mostly Cadians. Hope we see more of this army!

It's funny in this edition artillery units like basilisks and manticores are better off targeting single models with multiple wounds as opposed to massed infantry like they are designed to.

AM is Adeptus Mechanicus, whereas the Astra Militarum were called the Imperial Guard (IG) before being renamed so that GW could (I believe) copyright the name (or similar).

@@nightshade2021 With infestation, genestealers break the general rule of 9", instead only having the restrictions: 1) All genestealers must set up within 6" of the infestation node and 2) when an enemy model comes within 9" of an infestation node, it is destroyed (which doesn't matter for this game since Matt auto took turn 1)

This whole battle report was amazing. Nice to see some cool armies and a narrative campaign for a change!

Trygon prime couldn't attack first in the second turn because he didn't charge. Charging unit attack first, after the first charging unit bullgrims could spend 2 command point to destroy the trygon. OH!! you mentioned it later and bullgrims died again XD. Great Battle Report.

Man this was super cool. This was the first ever game I've watched of a wh40k match. Never played myself, but I found I couldn't turn it off once I had started on it. Great editing too. No boring bits.

Fantastic development for character in an army. Very interesting to look at.

Ok, the last soldier killing that Carnifex ... I guess the guard can enjoy such moments more than a Space Marine army ;)

When you mentioned the 'giant board of Do Not Forget', it sounded familiar because I actually wrote down some reminders when I went to a small tournament. It's pretty much the only reason I ever remember to throw grenades. :)

This was awesome. One of my favourites. Great armies, great scenario and lots of charachter

Matt: First thing we did was set up a table, then I looked at my opponents list and we made up a scenario, then I gave my entire army deep strike and I automatically get turn 1 in an edition where turn 1 is the most important thing, and I'll give us a 12" no mans land that my genestealers can easily cover. But it's going to be fun and narrative. 😂😂😂😂😂

You bet! If you think I was putting things too much in my favour, my desire to have my entire army deepstrike meant I had to buy overpriced Tyrannocytes which totally lowered the power of my army. If I were just trying to win my army would have looked very different. Also, my opponent didn't just agree to the scenario, he helped to build it!

Because in EVERY beat matt batrep he does stuff like this. Being a rules lawyer except when he's the one breaking the rule. Telling his opponents how to attack him. Etc for example at 40 minutes in watch for 5 minutes, watch how over ten times this guy has cocked dice, but Matt doesn't say a word and in fact very quickly proceeds to roll his saves but the SECOND Matt gets a cocked die he goes "OH THATS COCKED" and rerolls at around 44:50 Matt is a fucking munchkin, would never play with him.

at 1:13, thats why you bullygryns with the slab shields, 4+ invul is almost always more useful than the 2+save. Try it out :)

Don't look at it as sacrificing a die to the Game Gods but as a Summary Execution to inspire the other dice to roll better

One of the better and more enjoyable battle reports I have seen. Great ratio of battlefield, army, die rolls and player camera views. I know this is an older report but I know have time to watch them. Is that terrain just stacked insulation foam with sealant and paint on them? That is the best guard army I have seen in years, and even better its not one of those goofy looking soup armies.

Absolutely gorgeous army! You inspire me to paint some of my untouched horde of infantry.

Ian Reiter Same here, Mine is still left half unpainted due to the fact I have a lot of different layers of aesthetics to apply to each figure, not to mention the fact that I have a few unique made models which have their own personality to them haha. But trust me it's such a draining process but don't let them sit and collect dust! Get your ass to the table soldier and resume manufacturing more troops for the field! That's an order. (Good luck though and think of the end result!)

Hmm... -dice gods were tormenting the IG player the whole time. -IG player was clearly new to the edition, making lots of mistakes and sub-par choices. -IG still win, likely that the bugs would've been tabled in another couple turns. Good times to be an IG player, for sure.

@@michaelmckinney8128 Guard are strong because they have a lot of options to deal with things and their troop choices are dirt cheap, as well as being able to give orders which can save you from a lot of things that are normally problemtaic for a shooty army. You still have to know how to build and use them though, unlike some factions in previous editions (cough grey knights cough)

the best game i have ever watched like something out of the lore itself, a dark unassailable tide and tons of casualties and missed attacks, but that imperial valor shone bright and the day was won

This is like the last Matrix Movie where they were holding defenses of the hive colony

Where did you guys get the commissar Dog miniature? I saw that and I wanted to at least get something similar.

So when making a charge and performing melee combat, all models in the unit attack even if they aren't touching the enemy base?

Do you bring 4 infestation nodes per unit of genestealers? Nodes are locked to the designated unit like the node from unit A cannot be used to spawn dude from unit B

no, it's 4 per army. Any GS unit can emerge from any node.

Matt. Make a house rule that any unit that doesn't have a reserves special rule, can still deploy in reserve, but can only move on from table edge. Great content as usual

Is Pinning still a thing in 8th edition? Are there any weapons that have a rule similar to that?

Can you reroll only one of your charge dice any more after the errata to rerolls? I thought they made that change specifically because it was making deep strike charges too reliable but after rereading it I have to admit it doesn’t seem to have any effect on that.

The reroll stratagem specifically states you only reroll one die. The FAQ was for abilities that let you reroll things like Psychic Tests, in which case you have to reroll both dice.

miniwargaming fair enough. I was convinced that the change was intended to address charging from reserves but I have probably just mixed things up or I’ve heard it from someone else who was wrong. Might still play it that way in our group but I’ll run it by my friends and see what they want to do.

I have a question at roughly 56:20. When your Trygon attacked and got 3 wounds, 2 of them were saved. Is that why you only rolled one D6? For example if none of the wounds were saved, would you have rolled 3 D6 to determine damage?

That is correct.

29:05 The ones at the back can attack. The raw is if they are within 1inch a model thats fighting they can. The second rows bases are not 1inch wide. There 28mm or 33mm respectivley.
