Typhoon Days and Loneliness | Life in Taiwan

I didn't necessarily expect to go down this road but it has been requested that I talk about some of the harder aspects of being a foreigner living in Taiwan. I also talk about typhoon days, Fall holidays, and other bits of the interesting life that is teaching English abroad. Hope you enjoy!

Having good friends nearby is cathartic for sure. Being alone has its benefits too

I definitely love being alone but the value of having at least one friend that you can truly be yourself with is soooo vital to life in my opinion. And they ain't always easy to come by! 😂

The mud rocks and bbq looked liked loads of fun 🤩 I’m glad your colleagues are taking you in like family. It’s too bad your dealing with loneliness, but I’m sure it’ll pass soon :)

I feel this Ryan. Despite having other foreign teachers working at my academy and making a local Taiwanese acquaintance it's been really tough. This job is a meat grinder and I'm starting to seriously consider jumping ship if things don't get better. Thankfully from what I've been finding it's a hell of a lot easier to switch jobs here compared to what I had to go through over in Korea. I also hear you on the whole being elated some days and other days it's just the pits. I really gotta get on getting that sub license so I can make the jump to public school if and when I can and hopefully it turns out better than what I'm dealing with now. Still would like to meet up down your way in Kaohsiung if you're cool with it.

I totally understand that 'meat grinder' feeling. I got that some times at my last school and had those same ideas of jumping ship. Everyone's situation is slightly different but I'm glad that I stuck it through and eventually changed locations as the references from my previous school were instrumental in securing my current position. Whatever you decide, I would be more than happy to meet up should you make your way down to Kaohsiung. I also think getting the Illinois sub license (if you qualify) is a no brainer as it's relatively easy to apply for, lasts 5 years, and opens the door to some pretty exciting public school opportunities. Hang in there!

Thank you Ryan. This past week was particularly difficult and we at the academy have no idea what's been going on with the students as of late but the behavior has just gotten worse across the board. The understaffing doesn't help things either so the TAs are on edge as well. I've been hoping things get better and I'll see how things play out in the next couple of months or so. Kaohsiung's not too far from me (I'm in Xinying District in north Tainan) and there are express trains that shouldn't take too long to get down there. I'll let you know when I come for a visit and we can work things out from there. I need to get out and start seeing more places like I've been wanting to. Thanks again for the words of support and hopefully we can meet up in the near future.

Yeah Ryan I feel you mate, moving to a different place and building new relationships really takes time. I'm also somewhat of a lone wolf sometimes here. But we gotta be patient I guess. And U filmed this during a typhoon day by a river? that's so brave 😂.

Got the same feelings as well sometime bro! It's funny how you can be surrounded by millions of people in a Taiwanese city and yet feel very lonely! Look forward to our catch up next week. Anyways try to have some fun this long weekend! Maybe do a trip to east Taiwan like Taitung or something. It's really a different vibe on that side of the island.
