I find those results pretty extraordinary. In my experience, thermal cash register receipt paper used by retailers typically becomes unreadable in less than a year. One hardware retailer that I frequent actually prints "We suggest that you photocopy this receipt for your records" on the foot of their receipts.

So glad you made this video. I have been tempted by thermal printers. (A KZread art craze this xmas) ...but! Am concerned precisely about this issue. I have seen thermal print receipts fade before I got my taxes done...many times.

The more I'm learning watching you Joe on thermal typewriters, I'm really loving the idea and I'm excited to get the Brother EP-20...and I am trying to remember why I didn't like them, I'm having trouble remembering lol. I heard someone say these are not true typewriters I said well, they're in the typewriter database, so I'd have to disagree. ❤

I think a lot of people associate thermal paper with receipts kept in overfilled wallets or glove compartments, both of which result in temperature extremes. The wallet also presents issues with pressure and friction. So these amount to keeping a chocolate bar in your pocket or car. But with just a little sensible care, I do believe thermal paper can last a very long time.

This is interesting. It makes me consider trying out thermal typewriters. By the way: I wish you/Kevin could make a video about Kevin's Underwood Noiseless Portable typewriter. And perhaps compare the sound of it to other manual typewriters. Just a thought and I think it would be interesting.

Also, you should not put thermal paper into plastic sleeves, or generally in contact with plastic. I had some receipts that quickly became unreadable a few years ago this way.

good vid! I realised a childhood dream recently and ordered a camera that can print out on thermal paper. just search for digital instant camera on ebay and you'll find them. often marketed to kids.

Joe have you been having problems with these typewriter's extended use when it comes to batteries? I have a canon Typestar 10, it needs 4 C-type batteries and it eats 6 w - 9a. According to my experience, it drains these four C-type batteries in less than 4 hours. Granted, most laptops will give you 5 hours, but these old typestars should consume way less than a modern laptop! I expected them to last, I don't know, days!

I haven't had battery issues on my Typestar 4 or 5. Not sure about the 10, as it has RAM memory.

I have a typewriter. I cant find a typewriter repair man in El Paso. My typewriter needs a cleaning on the type face. Do you have a suggestion on how to do that? It will be my first time in doing so.

Remove the ribbon cover to gain access to the type bars. Cover the rest of the machine with rags. Then use a toothbrush and alcohol to clean the faces of the type slugs.
